Suicide traffic lanes

Does anybody remember "suicide" 3rd lanes on some roadways?

We had one on Foothill Blvd in the south San Leandro / Hayward area.

Were there others in the B.A. ?

These were 3 lane roads, the middle land was the Suicide Lane... it was a PASSING lane that could be used by cars going BOTH directions. These were deadly.

You were supposed to turn your headlights on, but that did little to prevent accidents when 2 cars going 35mph ran into each other head-on.

The one on Foothill Blvd were replaced by hwy 580. Hard to think in THIS day & age these was even permitted, but that was the 1950's.

Bay Bridge was supposed to be FREE after it was paid off

UPDATE... I'm amazed at the amount of 'flaming' here on Reddit in general, and in this post in particular... it seems folks enjoy being RUDE, and cop an attitude... saying things they would not say to me face-to-face.

Commenters are also making a lot of offbase assumptions about me... WAY OFFBASE !

There also seems to be a high level of rudeness in younger people,,,, WHY IS THIS ???

****************************************************************************************************

That IS what we were told growing up in the 1950's...

So, WTF happened ?

Bay Bridge & the other Bay Area bridges (excluding GGB) were supposed to be TOLL FREE !!!. When I was a kid it was 25¢ to cross the bridge. There were also rail lines on the lower deck for the Key System of electric trains that ran in the East Bay.

We all know that politicians can't pass up a cash cow if they see one... and then come the justifications (& at times also lies)...

Toll on the Bay bridge doubled in 1970 to 50¢;

Politicians count on the collective memory of a community to fade out over time, so broken promises are not remembered... after all, we can't have politician's promises to actually be kept... that would get in the way of "progress"...

So, how are promises of yesteryear to be kept today, and what faith are we to have that promises made today will be kept tomorrow?

I recently turned 75 & remember riding one of the last ferry's to Marin before the Richmond bridge was opened.

I also remember when Hwy 580 was being built, and they said t here would NEVER be medium & large trucks on it... and now... there is a controversial proposal to permit big rigs on hwy 580.

It's my personal opinion that the Bay Area has REALLY gone downhill, on many levels... I was born there & glad I live a more serene life in MendoLand...

SPOTLIGHT: Commander Cody band

Which includes various iterations, beginning with the Lost Planet Airmen in 1967.

This band literally changed my life, with it's blend of country, swing, blues, & rockabilly.

I first saw them around 1970 in Berkeley, CA and I was hooked right away on the boogie rhythm that had folks up & dancing with big smiles.

George Frayne formed the group in 1967 & took the stage name Commander Cody, and played an old rickety upright piano. Billy C Farlow was lead vocalist & played guitar. His slow Alabama voice let the words just roll out in a casual way.

Bill Kirchen was th emasterful lead guitar & co-wrote some of the songs (as did Billy C Farlow) and Andy Stein on fiddle, Lance Dickerson gave it the steady beat & Buffalo Bruce Barlow held down the bass.

There were 3 steel players including Bobby Black. And Norton Buffalo was even in the band in 1976, and can be heard on their live in Texas album.

While known for songs with a boogie beat, they could so great slow songs also, such as Sunset On The Sage and also Seeds & Stems again, Mama Hated Diesels is as real tear jerker. Hot Rod Lincoln was a 'hit' remake of a song from 1955. The album cover for Hot Licks & Cold Steel has a Jet Trucking company big rig on the cover... Jet was an emblematic trucking firm in Sonoma County, now just remembered as an album cover.

Eventually CC & LPA disbanded, & Frayne went on to other iterations with other musicians, while at the same time spending time painting while living in NY state. He also did some great video edits that can be seen on You Tube.

While the ORIGINAL CC&LPA band IS my favorite, every album old & new has sometibng on it I like. The newer Commander Cody Band(s) et al have some new arrangements of songs done earlier.
