I’m starting school in Chico but I’m from Redding and plan on going back and forth quite a bit. I hate driving on the freeway, how possible would it be to get a cheap jet ski and take it on the Sacramento River back and forth? Do you need a license for a jet ski and how long would a trip take?
Hate is a strong word, but my thoughts of weed barriers for vegetation comes close.
Found about 10 redwoods that overgrew their weed barriers years ago. I removed what I could but they were cutting into the tree pretty deep at this point.
We need strong volunteer/guerrilla coalitions for local parks to silently assist parks departments and prevent ecological health from falling through the cracks.
I recently visited California and America for the first time, after years of hoping and praying I'd get to see it in my lifetime, and absolutely fell in love with it. I'm wondering if it would be feasible to me job and income-wise to find a life for myself in the region? I'm looking to go back to college and get a degree in agriculture (or livestock veterinary) and hopefully a career in cattle, but I'm hesitant on whether or not Irish cattle farming would relate to farming in California, and if I'd struggle to find work for that reason. Would my degree hold up and would I be able to find work that could sustain a life for me in NorCal? Speaking to those who may be in a similiar career, but I understand my circumstances may be a bit niche lol. What has been your experience and would the life be enough to support a single guy, 20s, moving to an entirely new world on his own? Particularly focuses on income and the cost of living in the area.
This would honestly be a dream come true and I'm dedicated to getting there, but any input would be super appreciated. Thanks!
We went up to Mendocino for the weekend and did the U-pick at Earthspoke Farms in Mendocino and I highly recommend. It’s a gorgeous family owned property with the most beautiful dahlias I’ve ever seen! I believe they only do Saturdays during a few months of the year for upick and pumpkins in the fall, but worth the visit if you’re in the area. They also have highland cows.

I went there about 12 years ago. There were bright red-bark trees and a long path to get there. It might be outside city limits, and maybe off a highway. There was a thin waterfall pouring off the edge of a cliff which formed a circular pool. You could climb up the rock and jump in. I know it was somewhere around here, and I'm only in town for the next few days and would love to revisit some memories. If anyone knows where it is I'll be very grateful.
Thank you!
Looking for something within 2 hours of Sacramento preferably. Willing to drive a bit further for a special spot.
Turns out there’s a creek behind my apartment beneath a sea of ivy. I’m slowly unmasking the native ecology but being mindful of erosion along the creek. Going to clear some ground and transplant some ferns in the rainy season.
Wake up, pay attention. Be wary of strangers.
Apologies if you've seen this elsewhere - this is the most current version with lots of suggestions from other redditors.
I'm making a map of California in a classic fantasy style (sorta Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones). It's going to be filled with real world history and mythology, with the aim of highlighting local landmarks in a fun and educational way. Please ignore how rough parts of it look (text going through hills, rivers, etc), it'll all get cleaned up at the end. Forests will be going on at the end too.
While it's around two thirds done, I'd love to get more places and features in here before I get this made into print. Any more petroglyphs, burial mounds, ruins, forts, battlefields, Civil War heritage, ghost towns or the like that you think should be on here? Anything else is great too - landmarks, natural features, mythological creatures or just anything cool and quirky you think would look good on here. Thanks!
Hiya everyone!
As part of my three-four week California trip. I will be renting a car from San Fran for a few days and going north with the aim of seeing the redwood national state park. What other places should I visit? I am 22, British and will be solo, so I would like to ideally visit places I can meet young people. However this is not a deal breaker as when I go south I guess I will meet a lot of people in the cities.
My plan is to arrive in San Fran Sept 10- get the Amtrak/YARTS to stay two nights in Yosemite- back to San Fran and then rent a car to take up north for a few days, before using the Amtrak to travel back down south and eventually get a flight into Mexico. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
Edit: San Fran San Fran San Fran San Fran
Hey all, looking for a city/town to spend 2-3 days for a small vacation. This is kind of embarrassing because I myself actually live in Sonoma County and have for most of my life, but normally when I travel I go out of state or country entirely. This time I am hoping to find a place that is within a 4 hour drive from me.
The things I am looking for most are: proximity to the coast, walkability, and a decent downtown area with a variety of restaurants and pubs.
Thanks in advance!
California’s winegrape industry has committed $820,000 toward the eradication of a grapevine pest that has spread to 40 counties in the state, but the figure represents a small fraction of what might be needed to get the job done.
Here are my candidates. Wherever you feel has a sizeable community of Native Americans regardless of tribe or tribal inter-relations, events and pow-wows related to the culture:
