More goat questions

Looking into getting goats for milk, which of course means bucks. I don’t have the resources to happily have a boy pen and a girl pen. Would it be unethical to buy a new buckling every spring? Would he then be ready to mate by fall, get processed, then I have babies in the spring? Would this be reasonable? I’m not finding many stud services in my area. How many babies can a doe have before she should be retired? Minimum how many goats should I have? Thanks!

Prospective goat owner

We’re slowly getting into homesteading and the next reasonable step is goats. But I know fencing can be hard…

I’d like them to have a giant area, so my main concern is fencing! I’m seeing electric fencing, but I’ve never set it up before and I’m getting mixed reviews on if it works or not. But just metal fencing is super expensive for the size area I’m looking to get for them!

Also there’s no electricity where I’m putting them- any luck with solar chargers? I’m in Maine and it is quite sunny at least 4 days a week, usually 6 or 7 days, even in the winter and spring.

What posts do you use so the hot wire isn’t constantly going off and using all the solar power?

How tall should the fence be if I’m getting Nigerian dwarfs probably, or another small milk breed? I saw 5’ tall and 5’ from anything climbable.

What about gates? I’m familiar with Hotwire gates as I came from horses, but we need a gate large enough for vehicles with trailers to go through.

If the hot wire is too long, can you just cut it? If it’s too short can you join two strands?

Lastly, diet! I’m sure they’re gonna eat all their fresh grass quickly. Is hay and grain with a supplement / salt lick sufficient?

EDIT: also, hoof care? Reasonable to do myself, or should you hire a professional like with horses?
TIA

Best guesses?

This dog is a result of my parents irresponsibility. They were gifted a (mother’s believed breed spoiler) “>!plott hound!< from a breeder” which was his mother. The first photos are him, from oldest age to youngest, then the photo of two dogs on a couch is him and his mother, everything after that is his mother.

Origin with breed guesses spoiler;
>!She was never spayed and ran away. She was 50 lbs when fit, he’s 85, and there was an intact Great Dane a few houses down so that was always our best guess.!<

Open to any guesses on 1) him, but also 2) if his mother was a >!plott hound!< or a mix or something entirely different. Eventually I want to get him embark before he passes, to ease my lifelong curiosity, but 💰💰💰. Thanks!!

WPG Color + registered name ideas

This little guy is considered “brown and gray ” right? The options on my registration form are brown and gray or chestnut and gray.

EDIT to add- is he ticked or roan? What is the difference? Can I not tell until he is older?

Also his name is Merle! I can’t decide on a registered name, but I’m thinking something serious, just in case he ever becomes a stud dog. Id like to get into showing, and if he stays healthy and is a good prospect I’d like to breed him when he’s nice and mature. In my area there aren’t enough of these dogs, so if I end up with a good breeding prospect I’d like to help others discover this amazing breed :) as such id like to keep the name semi serious just in case he is used in breeding

TIA

Kennel while potty training help

Hello! I have a 9 week old pointing griffon puppy, who isn’t fully potty trained (duh) and goes in his kennel. His pee pad sits on the floor of it and it’s rather gross, he ends up smelling pretty quickly. But all the free standing kennel grates either look uncomfortable or are expensive! Any recommendations? Really just looking for a drainage type situation I guess, onto a pee pad below where he walks and lays.

Potty training SOS 10 week old wire haired pointing griffon

Hello all! So I don’t expect him to be potty trained, or even close. He poops outside! Most of the time. But pee? We can be outside for 2 hours, as soon as we get inside, he pees…

I’ve been

  1. rewarding him every time he pees and poops outside, saying “potty!” And rewarding/praising heavily, playing with him outside after, treating, praising.
  2. going AH AH AH very harshly whenever he potties inside, and taking him outside on a very short leash with no fun until he potties outside… but this almost never happens, then he goes inside to finish his potty.

I don’t expect him to hold his bladder but he seems to find inside to be his potty spot

Wirehaired pointing griffon grooming

Hi all! My puppy is only 9 1/2 weeks old so no stripping yet, but I’m trying to research for when he’s ready.

So far: did scissor his beard around the eyes (before and after provided) because it was all in his eyes! He kept pawing at his face like it was annoying. Did I do good? Should I have done this differently? I’ve also trimmed his sanitary and his paw pads, and clipped his toes so he tracks less pee everywhere. I’ve been grooming him with a very fine tooth comb for desensitization purposes about twice a week.

Upcoming:

-How do I hand strip? I’ve seen people use what looks like an undercoat rake, I’ve seen people use stripping knives though I’m scared to harm his skin, I’ve seen people use the stripping stones and pulling. But I don’t understand how I should start, how I know what needs to be pulled, if they all work the same or if I should combine methods. If they all work the same, I saw someone use what appeared to be a 12 blade undercoat rake and that seems easiest!

-When do I know to start? I’ve seen people say 4 months all the way through to 2 years.

-How often do I do it? Again I’ve seen people say every other week all the way through to every other year

-How do I know if a coat is “blown”?

TIA!!

My boy “Merle’s” recall on day 2! WPG 8 weeks

He is so insanely smart! What else should I be training at this age? We’re starting potty training of course- on pee pads in the kennel while I’m gone, or outside while I’m here; but it isn’t perfect. If I catch him mid pee and “AH AH” he understands but he often gives me very little or no warning he’s going to pee. He’s only pooped inside once so far. I haven’t had a puppy in 10 years (my 10 1/2 year old is the second video for tax!!)

P.s please ignore the yard hay, we had lawn mower malfunction after malfunction!!

I got the griffon!

Here’s his first introduction to birds! He offered some pointing and tried to sniff, was very confused when they kept walking away. Super promising first introduction for this non hunter!

Help finding lost chicks

I recognize they are very likely dead but… baby chicks were using their ramp to jump my fence. They are so light, unlike adult chickens, they can sit on top of the wire. All day yesterday I was wrangling chickens over from the other side. I did a head count at mid day and I was missing one… they never seemed to go far when I was finding them, just sitting on the other side of the fence loudly peeping or pacing the fence line. They always stayed with a buddy too, why would I lose ONE? No feathers or sign of struggle… then at night, another head count, another single chick… gone. I have since fixed the fence, there is a roof around the ramp. But does anyone have any ideas on finding these guys? I have a hard time believing theyd run off alone or get eaten with not a single feather left. I don’t know where to start or what to do, or if I should count my losses.

Understanding chocolate genetics

So I have a black mottled frizzle bantam Cochin pullet, and 4 straight run chocolate mottled silkies. I have no idea how the breeder made the chocolate mottled silkies / what they chose to cross with. If one of the silkies is a rooster, would I in theory get chocolate mottled frizzle bantam silkies x Cochin? Of course some will be smooth, some will be silkie, some will be frizzle, but will some be chocolate and some black?

Bumble foot help

This hen came from a neglect case from my parents. I’ve cleaned her up quite well but this bumblefoot isn’t coming out. They have no idea how long she’s had this as they didn’t notice. I got the scab off the worser foot and nothing came out. I keep soaking it to no improvement.

So far I’ve: soaked in warm epsom salt water, gotten the hard scab off, tried to squeeze stuff out gently but nothing came out, so I sprayed with vermectin, topped with antibiotic without pain killer, then put gauze and wrapped with vet tape once it dried. I’ve now been soaking it once or twice a day. I’m on day 3 with no improvements

Neglected chicken update

Can I cut this beak back? She’s soaked, butt trimmed, head trimmed, bumblefoot about to be extracted drained ointment applied and covered, nails trimmed from curling under her, now should I trim her beak? At one point she was a high level show bird so she’s quite liking her spa day and is kindly staying on the towel on our counter!

Neglected chicken help

So I just got our 7-8 year old silkie from my parents. She was living in gross negligence. A tote so small she wouldn’t fit with the lid on it, and could only turn around in place. Not cleaned nearly enough for how small it was. Her nails were grossly overgrown which is why they are bleeding a bit, I cut them a tiny bit too short. I have her inside, in a large tote, under a light fan, on shavings with mealworms and grit and food and water now. 1) what else can I do to make her more comfortable? 2) her butt is awfully gross too, why is that? Will a bath fix it or disguise the problem? 3) for bumblefoot, I read I soak in warm epsom salt water for 30 mins, remove scab, squeeze kernel out, flush it, dry well, no painkiller antibiotic cream, nonstick gauze and wrap. How often should I replace this? When I replace it, should I flush it every time? Just spray with vermectin? I have both iodine and spray vermectin, what’s best to flush it with? Thanks!

Are these actually chocolate mottled silkie crosses?

No idea what generation these are, found them cheap af on Facebook! Appear to be black mottled, I thought black mottled were always roosters? Will they mature brown? I read sometimes newer generations aren’t sex linked or male silkies and female chocolate for the cross can make non sex link? I’m genetic illiterate and don’t understand! Give me hope

Grooming assistance

Hello all! So.. there’s so much information. I kind of just want to see if I have it right, how to make it easier, what I have wrong, etc. this is going to be a pet, not a show dog.

So far I believe I maintain with a slicker and comb weekly or more as needed. Then every 8-12 (?) weeks I should use a stripping blade, THEN undercoat rake? Do I undercoat rake more often? Is plucking with a pumice stone better? Is a slick ez equivalent?
