Rollei A110 Durability

Hi folks!

I’m in the market for a Rollei A110. Do these cameras have common areas of failure to check? I’ve found some cosmetically good but untested options and like to know what I’m risking.

Edit: thanks for the info folks. looks like its worth paying extra for a tested camera.

The Base is Pretty Neat

I was a little skeptical of the need for a charging dock/base. I have and read across all the xteink devices so they last months on one charge. Obviously I don’t need a charging dock.

Xteink provided* me with a base so I was able to see how useful it is for me. The base is sturdy and well constructed. As expected, I’m not using it for charging but I am using it for everything else. It works very well for securely connecting my devices to my computer for flashing or data transfer. It’s a cute little display stand. It’s great for hands free reading with a page turner. It keeps the pogo adapter from shorting out. The base is a quality of life upgrade for me. I didn’t need it, but it has made interacting with the readers a lot smoother and I plan on using it for charging when I finally need to.

*For transparency, I am part of the Xteink expert group that receives products for review. I consider myself to be unbiased and have not been paid to review items. But like all reviewers that receive PR, the fact I didn’t pay for the item will have some impact on how I experience it.

Studio for Rent, Lake City - $1,295/mo - Currently Available

Hi!

Posting this for a family member, I hope that's ok. This studio in Lake City, with in-unit washer/dryer and included secure parking, is currently available.

More pictures in the listing. They use a management company so you wouldn't be communicating with the landlord directly (i'm not sure if that's desirable or not).

X4 Classic/Original X4

I’m enjoying the X4 Classic a lot but the pro is still my #1.

Left: X4 Classic Right: Original X4

I received the classic from Xteink at no cost. I purchased the original X4 myself.

SwiftX redelivery times? sigh...

Does anyone know the redelivery timing?

I missed a delivery yesterday (resisting the urge to rant about how drivers don't know how to use call boxes) and mostly want to know if this is a within 24 hours process or a whenever the stars align process. I've dealt with SpeedX and Uni Uni a few times so I'm ready for the wait.

Edit: I forgot to say I tried their customer support and it kept saying it didn't know and that my package is out for delivery (it's been out for delivery for 30 hours).

X4 Pro Delayed - who else hates SpeedX

I live in the US. My X4 Pro was out for delivery this morning but SpeedX determined my address was inaccessible. This is completely inaccurate because my shipping address is an occupied house with a porch. And the delivery instructions said “leave on porch.” The occupants were home all day and are obsessed with their video doorbell, so they would have noticed a delivery attempt.

Anyway, I had the same thing happen with my x3 and that took about ten days to receive after the first delivery attempt. I thought it was just because I was shipping to an apartment building but I guess waking up five steps to a porch is the same thing as a locked apartment building door.

Who else has had a terrible time with the last mile deliver companies? I’d gladly pay extra for shipping if it meant USPS would deliver.

edit: Damn, y’all are spicy. I didn’t realize being critical of xteink’s shipping practices would touch a nerve. Also, don’t delete your mean comments, I can take it. Lol

What’s the plan with the new displays?

So, we have it on good authority that x3s and x4 pros are shipping with updated displays which means updated display drivers.

This is a huge deal for the custom firmware community because flashing many firmwares, even safe ones, will “brick” devices that have these new displays. Unlocked devices will be fine since you can just USB flash. Locked devices are risking a full on brick at worst or a huge headache at best.

How can users differentiate between the old and new displays so they can select safe FW? Is there any plan to update consumers?

And if you maintain custom firmware, look for the updated sdk on GitHub ASAP.

Update on Stock Firmware and Error 9

I made a post the other day about not updating to stock firmware 6+ due to a bug with flashing back to a different FW.

Basically when trying to flash to a new firmware over SD/OTA some users would encounter "Error 9." This error is a version check that basically says no firmware updates unless you're an update on stock. Another version of the same issue is flashing another FW, but the device rebooting into stock. Xteink has not commented on why this is happening with the stock FW.

Here is a solution for the situation:

  1. Download Escape Hatch and rename it update.bin, load it onto the root of your SD card.
  2. Download another firmware, such as Crosspoint, name it anything but update.bin, load it onto the root of your SD card.
  3. Insert the SD card into your device if it's no already.
  4. On the X4, plug a charger into the device*, press the power button and the up/top rocker button at the same time. On the X3, press the power button and the left side button at the same time.
  5. You will get a very simple UI for Escape Hatch. Scroll down to "Flash Firmware"
  6. Select the other firmware on your card, the one that isn't update.bin

And that should be it. Please reply if you have issues and be very specific about what the issue is.

*For some reason the x4 must be plugged in and able to charge to SD flash.

Is that firmware safe? - Updated Brick Club List

Hi! I'm one of the maintainers of The Brick Club List, a list of firmware and their compatibility with X4s, X3, and USB locked devices. We just updated the list to an easier to read format and easier to type URL. This list is a jumping off point for doing further research into firmware you'd like to flash. I'll be adding a "more info" page in the near future but I wanted to get the data out asap.

We hope it can continue to be helpful for the community. (Join the discord if you're interested in helping with further improvements to the list!)

[USA - WA (shipping from anywhere ok)] Xteink Ereader Things

Hi! I'm looking to have a few different prints done for Xteink ereaders. (links at the bottom of the post.) The tolerances are kind of tight on these things so attention to details would be great. I'd also like a variety of colors, maybe even transparent! I'll likely want at least two of each file printed.

If you want timely help or answers to questions…

ask them at r/ XTEINK ! This is a community run sub.

The official sub (the one you’re reading now) is great but it takes a week for posts to be approved and then no one sees them so you never get help.

You will get help with your x4 and x3 but we need to see your posts!

Don’t flash Papyrix on a locked device…

EDIT: Papyrix now supports flashing over SD card. I strongly suggest understanding this process before flashing a FW that only offers SD flashing as an option for locked devices. It’s not hard but you should know what you’re signing up for.

Original post: … unless you only want to use Papyrix forever.

There is no way to change or update the firmware after its been installed.

This also applies to other firmwares that have removed over the air (OTA) and SD flashing support.

First edit: Sorry folks, I posted a little hastily before I had to step away for a bit. I realize my explanation was a little unclear.

To fully explain: Papyrix removed over the air and SD card flashing from their Crosspoint fork. Because of this, all methods of firmware flashing are unavailable on locked devices that have been flashed with Papyrix. Unlocked devices can change from Papyrix to another firmware via USB only.
