Weekend F - Diabolical As Ever

The F usually waits for an A or C at Jay. Today it pulled in just before an A. I hopped onto a mostly empty F, and as the Brooklyn-bound A’s doors opened, a flood of people poured off and rushed the platform. The F did not reopen its doors. It just left. Next F: 18 minutes.

Then it gets better. Because of repair work this weekend, that same F skips ahead to 7th Ave. So if you’re trying to reach the Manhattan-bound platforms at Bergen, Carroll, Smith–9th, or 4th Ave, your only move is to catch a Manhattan-bound F from 7th, or transfer to one the moment your train pulls in.

We pull into 7th Ave, and sure enough there’s a Manhattan-bound F on the local track right across the platform. Everyone on my train is GEARED for it. It leaves. Next Manhattan bound F: 23 minutes.

I got off at 7th so I was fine, but come on, MTA. What are we doing here? Keep the flow of people moving. Now you’ve got a platform full of people waiting 23 minutes when that train could’ve held 15 seconds for the transfer. If you’re going to close station access with no shuttle alternative, at least put in the effort to make sure people can still get where they’re going.

R211 D train Speed Update (Brooklyn)

Just rode the R211 D from 36 to Atlantic Ave. It cruises through the first 2 express stops at 38-40mph. After prospect ave, the down the hill to 4th Ave 9th street, it kicked up to 49 and topped out at 52mph through 4th Ave 9th street and held 52 all the way until we reached the half way point at Union street. What a ride!

After they took the R160s off the N, I thought gone were the days of good speed through 4th Ave 9th street, until now.

Penn Station Access (question)

Can’t New Haven line trains access Penn Station as is now? The infrastructure is already there, no? What else needs to be built to make this happen?

19 minutes between F trains at 5:16pm on a Wednesday (no reported delays)

Smith 9 St, southbound, 5:16pm on a Wednesday. One F pulling out, next one 19 minutes behind it. Three Gs land inside that same window. It’s an F gap in the middle of the peak.

The base fare went to $3 in January. The only lines where riders can actually feel a frequency difference are the ones that got new signals: the L and the 7. Below Church Av the F is the only service there is, and it’s still running the same headways on the same interlockings it’s had for decades.
And a gap like this just vanishes into a monthly average.

The MTA operates like a portfolio company that got levered up, stripped for cash, and left to coast on assets somebody else paid for, the classic private equity play. The fare increases arrive on schedule but the wait times continue to go up.

Park slope dog poop getting better?

Over the past several months, me and others have posted about how much dog poop is left on the streets.

I’ve noticed a real difference! I rarely see dog poop left on the street. Have you all seen a decrease in the amount of poop you see on the street?

I backseat drive in Ubers

I’m here because my girlfriend notified me that my backseat driving is getting excessive in Ubers.

We’re in NYC, I grew up here and I’m used to taking yellow cabs that move on the road.

My main frustration with Ubers are the speed limit or under the speed limit highway driving, the turning down blocks that have garbage trucks on them, the slowing down for yellow lights that we could easily make, and the lack of general situation awareness on the roadway.

At this point, I feel like I’m paying for someone’s tank and not to get to my destination faster. I know backseat driving isn’t going to solve anything and I should be better.

I just think, as an uber, is there no onus to get us there quickly? Turning down blocks with garbage trucks is and slowing down for hellos instead of taking them is not what we’re paying for as patrons.

Feel free to destroy me in the comments. I know I’m somewhat wrong here.

DoorDash issues

What’s up with Dashers not taking orders? My girlfriend and I left the beach at 6p, ordered our food at 630 on our way home and the food was ready to be picked up at 6:53. We arrived home at 7 and our order hadn’t been picked up. 2 hours later and a dasher still hasn’t been assigned.

We always leave a preemptive 20% tip when ordering. Does anyone find that dashers just don’t pickup orders?

Status update on Casa Azul

I remember a few months back they posted they were closing. Do we have an update on the health of their business. I live nearby but rarely walk by during business hours so I don’t have an idea of how full the joint has been.

Alma Negra or Fonda?

This one is simple, just comment the one you prefer and why. I think they’re both great but I’m in a debate and need your help. Thank you, community ❤️

If you’re suffering through the White Lotus wait, watch Beef.

It’s not a 1:1 comparison, but Beef scratches a surprisingly similar itch. The creeping suspense, the dark themes, the uncomfortable comedy, it has the same DNA that makes White Lotus so addictive.

Both shows have that tension where you can feel something is about to go terribly wrong, and yet there’s always this dark humor underneath keeping it from being fully bleak. The characters are deeply flawed in ways that make you cringe and root for them at the same time.

If you haven’t watched it yet and Season 3 has left a hole in your life, do yourself a favor.

I’ve always been a Fonda stan. Alma Negra blew my mind tonight! What does the hood think of this place? I don’t want to pit them against each other but Alma Negra is great!
