Interesting articles on why Peoria looks the way it does architecturally

Like, why do the police station and BluTown look like every other place in every city in America?

Has anyone ever been able to get a newspaper delivered to them in this city?

I just moved to the Village Lofts, and tried to transfer my subscriptions to the Financial Times and the Boston Globe to here. Not a single paper has ever shown up. I've called and called and they are "dealing with the issue with the delivery providers," who seem to be the people who deliver both publications. It's ridiculous.

Have you ever had a paper delivered? Is it a real thing, or is it just something they advertise and don't do? They keep telling me to "read it online," but no, I won't. I read the Times and WSJ online; the reason I subscribe to either of those publications is to have a newspaper to hold in hand.

Jim O'Day funded by real estate industry - what's the deal?

Someone posted this on Facebook, but I wanted to ask here. Apparently Jim O'Day has been receiving campaign funding for years from the realty industry, with more than $1,000 coming in during this cycle alone.

Why? If he's been the progressive guy who's watching out for regular people, why is he getting money from the people profiting off the high prices of housing?

EDIT: Wow - not a single person engaged with anything I said regarding why the realty industry would make a point of funding O'Day. Instead, a bunch of O'Day zombies just showed up saying "but but Raj bad." Seriously, people, get a grip: this is America; we debate the pros and cons of the different candidates, unless you're MAGA...or, apparently, an O'Day fan.

Anyone else have trouble listing a few "favorite" movies?

I mean, I love movies in general. Everything from the canon stuff, especially European canon like Fellini and Godard, to European "sleaze" - like J. Franco, who doesn't deserve the reputation at all, at least not for some of the movies he made that _he_ actually loves - and others to trash horror, 80s sex comedies, and then some of the mainstream movies that people love to trash - everything except MCU stuff, basically.

How do you pick a few movies that are your favorite, when there are so many different types to love?

It's not a question I think about much, but when I come to that section of Letterboxd, I'm always vexed by it.

Steelman the argument for the legislature's vote on the audit?

Hi all,

In the interest of being an informed voter and all that - as well as because I'm just curious - could anyone steelman for me the argument supporting the legislature's vote/action against the audit that voters said they support in the recent vote?

I don't want to get into a debate; I just want to hear the best argument in favor of what seems like a subversion of the will of the voters.

In a situationship with a woman (30F) who is reacting strangely to my (41m) plans to move away

I've been friends with a woman - 30F - for several years. We've been really close friends who lean on each other, support each other, tell each other "I love you." Some months ago, our relationship turned sexual, and we started spending even more time together. When together, we're often holding each other, hugging, kissing. She says things like, "You're the only person I've ever been in love with". We're not officially in a relationship because of the age difference, etc., but we've been acting like it - really, even before things turned sexual. When I'm away, she often calls and just sits on the phone with me as we work, or says, "I miss you and I wish you were here."

Now I need to move away due to work, to another region of our country. I've been surprised at how strangely she's been acting about it. Instead of seeming sad or wanting to talk about what it all means, she just says how happy she is for me. And when I say what a big change it is, she tells me things like "I'm always there so we would see each other!" even though she's only there a few times per year; "It's not that far!" even though it is; or "I'm moving there soon," which is not certain, as she's applying for jobs there but as of yet has no offers and isn't 100 percent sure she wants to move.

I know she loves me deeply, but I can't figure out her response! I told her we should talk about things before I leave, and she asked, "What is there to talk about? I'm happy for you!" And she says this meaningfully, not in a sarcastic way; there's not a masked anger. We got into an argument, and she started saying things like, "It's like you don't trust that I'll miss you or that I love you." That's not the case...I just want not to make a big change without talking about what it means for us.

Anyone have any advice, or maybe anything to help me understand her thinking?!

tl;dr: In a situationship - where we act like a couple, but are only not together because of different life stages, etc. - and I'm surprised at how she seems to think a big move isn't a big deal, even though she says she misses me when I'm away briefly.

How important is the NPR label?

I was recently offered two similar jobs. One was writing for a local newsweekly in the LA market, and the other was at a local NPR station in a medium-sized market hours away from Los Angeles. Both would have me covering local news and doing some multimedia stuff, but the latter would have me writing spots and has the NPR imprimatur.

Of course, I'd rather be in the LA market, but is it crazy to throwaway a full-time gig at an NPR affiliate, given the name recognition? What would better advance my career? Being in a major market and networking, working the NPR label...something else entirely? I think the LA newsweekly would have me doing some photo stuff as well, but that's not 100 percent certain.

Slater Cotton Mills?

Hi all,

I looked at Slater Cotton Mills, and the place seemed nice, if a bit expensive. The only thing that puts me off are some of the online reviews, though they are a bit old. I'm wondering what people's experiences have been, specifically regarding safety, pests, and upkeep.

I don't mean parking, I mean the following:

Bill Processing Fee $5.68

Stormwater $7.80

Water $18.92

Sewer $14.82

Gas $30.00

Trash Charges $8.00

And then on top of that a fucking "bill processing fee" of more than $5. And add in that you have to pay a fee if you pay by debit card ($7.95), credit card (3.75 percent), or even fucking check! ($0.95) - and they don't take cash.

Is this normal? For reference, it's PPM.

EDIT: The bill processing fee is $5.68, not the previously listed $568.

EDIT AGAIN: Just to be clear, I'm not asking about the legality of what they're doing. I'm sure a major company like PPM is going to have lawyers who read the law for them. I'm just asking if this weird way of billing is normal in Chicago. I lived in NYC for 12 years and never came across such a thing.
