Approach into akureyri

I am staying near the airport, and the takeoffs have been dramatic. Then, I looked at the approach to 01 (which has been in use all day). Makes the aspen airport approach seem easy. That 5.3 degree offset slope- wow! I wonder how often it gets used vs the flight diverting/cancelling

Glider planes on display in Iceland

We visited the akureyri aviation museum , and they had some fun glider planes on display in addition to all the power planes. The historian for the museum informed me that the glider club in the area is still active and they fly regularly in the summer.

Some unique planes at the akureyri aviation museum

We visited the museum while on a trip to Iceland. For plane enthusiasts, it’s worth a stop. If you are with non-enthusiasts, there’s comfortable chairs as well as coffee.

Beach or waterfall?

Our family is trying to decide between:

Kolugljúfur waterfall vs. Hvitserkur beach.

My look at the nearby tide table from holmavik says low tide will be around 6pm. We are coming from laugarholl and my wife wants to see the Glaumbær Turf Farm & Museum.

So, for the waterfall, it makes no difference.

But, for the beach, we will need to backtrack to the beach during the falling tide.

My question: is one of these places a “must see” and any extra driving time is worth it? And/or is there a skip-able option here?

Just a boring morning in Iceland

We woke up to this amazing rainbow in front of our hotel this morning. A good reminder to open those blackout curtains every once in a while.

I’m never complaining about hamburger prices at resorts ever again

In the midst of a trip through Iceland and I’m repeatedly getting shocked by the food prices. For Americans, divide the number by 100, and that is about the $ price.

We saw puffins!

We went to the cliffs by Latrabjarg. Warning to those driving: the road is under construction and travel is very slow for several kilometers on the temporary road. It’s very, very rough on the temporary road. We drove a Nissan qashqai, and did okay. But, it might be a challenge/cause damage in anything smaller or with lower ground clearance.

Laundromat options in Iceland

We are doing the ring road for 14 days and I’m somewhat reluctant to bring 14 days worth of socks, underwear and shirts. Looking online, there don’t seem to be that many laundromats in towns.

But, then I saw a mention that some campsites have laundromats. Are those laundromats available for use by passers-by? Or, do you have to have a camping registration to use the camp laundry?

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Luggage and self-drive tour question

We have a 13 day itinerary drive where we are changing hotels / guest houses nightly.

I am debating on taking a soft sided travel backpack or a hard sided suitcase. There will be 4 adults in a skoda wagon (unless they switch cars on us).

Have folks who’ve done the ring road found one or the more convenient when changing venues daily?

I’m also not too familiar with the way back of a skoda. Does it slope a lot? Does it have smaller than expected space?

Unusual scene at our glider airport today

To be fair, they also have no engines, just horse power. 😝

Moka pot in the wilderness

When you can’t bring your full espresso rig into the wilderness, a moka pot makes for a delicious alternative. Seagull lake, MN on our last night of a 6 day, 60 mile paddle. Well worth the effort for those inclined to solitude and a good cup of coffee. Controlling the brew process is a bit tricky with a whisperlite, but it works if you are careful and don’t walk away.

It’s been a minute since I last geocached , looking for advice

The last time I tried Geocaching, I had a Garmin etrex vista, and iPhones didn’t exist. I still have the etrex vista, but it’s very, very slow.

What do people use these days? Just their phones? I’ll be traveling to an area with no cell service, and I was considering getting a dedicated handheld get gps device for the battery longevity. I see that garmin now makes a solar powered gps.

Any recommendations are welcome.

Tipping line-person?

what do y’all do? I’ve seen some comments on tipping and I was trying to get an idea of how much is appropriate if your plane has been kept safe and sound for a few days and the tie downs were nicely knotted for you.

Getting IFR clearance out of 06C

I’m contemplating using 06c as my airport since its closer to my conference than KDPA.

MY QUESTION: how accommodating is Chicago clearance at getting one going when you phone them up? I need to depart Saturday evening and I want to be able to scoot if the predicted thunderstorms start popping up around 6-7pm that day. I am keen to avoid sitting on hold for 30 minutes while they deal with the big jets at ohare. I was planning on using IFR in case I leave too late and am flying on a moonless night….which I consider IFR for my personal minimums.

I broke 1000 hours!

I was catching up on my logbook entries and I realized that I just went past 1000 hours last month. I guess it’s on to the next 1000….

has anyone used their dream machine (UDM) pro to locally host/record with MyQ cameras?

I am considering purchasing a few and I wasn’t sure if I could simply use the video monitoring software that ubiquiti offers in order to record the camera feeds (they use Bluetooth and WiFi )

I’m looking for a solar powered WiFi camera (not cellular). I’ve seen ads for gardepro, and several others. I’m looking for user experiences with a setup like this

What the heck See’s candy?!? You all didn’t label any allergens on your box of chocolates.

You could have injured or killed my kid.

As someone who grew up in SF, I am very disappointed to discover this poor labeling.

extra labeling is required for:

“…eight major foods or food groups--milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans…”
