PT and/or Strength Coach in Western Suburbs

I am current in the last couple of weeks of my 2nd HM training block (Naperville on Oct. 18.) LIke my first HM, I getting to the end my training with lots of niggles. Last time it was IT Band, this time it is Shin Splints. While I am doing the best i can to get to the starting (and hopefully finishing line), I want to be able to train without having to manage through injuries. I am hoping to do a Full next year. I am a 58YO male that just picked up running a little over a year ago.

For my past issues, I have seen PTs at Athletico (ITB in the spring) and Barrington Orthopedic (Shin Splints), but I don’t feel that they are giving me anything more than some basic “Yea you have XXX injury, here are some basic daily exercises to do at home.”

I am really looking for a PT that would work very closely with me on a strengthening program over the winter to prepare me for races in the Spring and Fall.

Anyone have any recommendations? And, if that can be combined with a run coach, all the better.

Seatbelt sign turned off while in penalty box

Ok, this was a new one on me. Granted I only fly 2-3 times per year, but I have been flying for 40+ years, I have never seen this.

We landed at O'Hare tonight a few minutes early. Gate wasn't ready, so we ended up in the penalty box. A couple of minutes in, the pilot came on and said that he was going to turn the fasten seat belt sign off so we could use the restroom if we needed to.

I have never seen that. In fact, I thought it was a requirement that the seat belt signs stays on from landing to gate. Am I wrong about that?

Use T2 Security for UA if not checking bags?

Wife and I are flying out of O'Hare on United (mainline) tomorrow. Right now our flight is departing from T2 (G3). Assuming it doesn't change overnight. Can we use T2 security since we are not checking any luggage?

Any post run rituals or must haves?

For me, after any run more than about 1 hour or so, I have to make a stop on McDonald's for large Diet Coke (and a bagel on occasion.) I don't what is so good about McDonald's Diet Coke, but it just hits the spot and is very refreshing.

Rental Car Return to Eagle’s Nest. How long should I plan for?

My wife are traveling to spend a couple of days at Disneyland in September. We will be renting a car from LAX and then have to return it.

Or outbound flight is a AA regional jet, so it will be departing the Eagle’s Nest. The flight departs at 7:20AM on a Sunday morning. Assuming the tram is not functional, what time do I reasonable need to be back that Rental Car Center, especially considering I am driving up from Anaheim? If I leave Anaheim at 4, is that enough time to get gas, and return the car and still get to our plan. I am concerned about the extra time we will need to get to the remote terminal from T4.

Managing Paces during short intervals?

This morning I did a 400 into 200 interval workout. With my 1/4 mi intervals I have enough time to adjust my pace if I am going to fast or slow. But, the 1/8 mile is so short (<50 sec) that I don’t even have time to get a pace update. As a result I was faster than my required pace on all six 1/8 mi intervals.

How do you know how to pace such short distances? Do you just learn what a pace feels like?

Can't do heat adjustment

I have been trying to adjust my scheduled run for tomorrow using the weather adjust pace option. I have successfully used it as recently as yesterday. But, today, I keep getting an error. I have tried closing and re-opening the app, restarting the phone, etc. The only thing I have not yet tried is uninstalling the app.

Anyone else seen this issue?

Sydney 2027 as first Marathon - Am I crazy to think this?

57M, just ran my first HM in May (1:55:05) and currently training for my second in October. I am looking forward to doing a full in 2027 and I jokingly suggest to my wife that I could do the Sydney marathon and we could make a vacation out of it. She agreed and thinks it is a great idea. (Whoops!)

But, as I think about it, is this really a great one to be my first? Pros is that it is a very prestigious race, the idea of running in Sydney is very appealing, and it has a very high WAF. Cons is that I hear is a pretty hard course (very hilly) and I live in Chicago, which is pretty flat, so hill training would be minimum. It is a long way to go, especially for the unknown of my first.

Since it is not until late August 2027, I could, in theory, try and a do a marathon in spring in my area, just to convince myself I can do it. Or, I could just do 1 or 2 HMs before starting my Full training block.

I am not that worried about the lottery. I have looked at the tour packages (for 2026) and would probably just do a tour package (and tack on the Great Barrier Reef.)

One other option, I proposed was the Gold Coast Marathon in July. That one looks much flatter, but there is something about running across the Harbor Bridge and ending at the Opera House that is just very alluring. (and I think another 1+ months of training would be beneficial.)

Would love to hear opinions.

Track Workouts in the West Suburbs (Bartlett, S. Elgin, STC)

Not sure if this is the right place to ask…

Up to now, I have done all my interval training on my local trails. But, I wanted to try doing some track workouts. I live I west side of Bartlett. Are there any tracks that I can use in the Barlett/South Elgin/St. Charles area? I am not sure what the rules are for using school tracks, like SEHS or maybe on the STC middle schools.

Recommendations for next plan(s) (10K and HM)

I ran my first HM three weeks ago tomorrow using Runna as my training program. I then used the 3 week recovery plan with a 10K run scheduled for tomorrow as my last run.

I am already targeting my next 1/2, but it will be October 17th (21 weeks). I signed up for a 10K in 4 weeks, but I am trying to decide how to schedule my next training plan or plans.

I tried creating a 10K race plan, targeting my 10K, but Runna would not create a 4 week program. All it would do is create a 6 week program and allow me to "skip" the first 2 weeks.

I guess I could create a full 21 week HM plan and just add my 10K as a B Race. I am planning some other races during the summer, but haven't finalized any yet. But, it feels that 21 weeks for a 1/2 is a long training program.

Would it better to just use a "Get Faster" or "Create my own plan" for a few weeks and then start the HM plan right after the 10K?

Wondering what others think.

Those with high daily move goals

i see some people posting daily move goals of 1000+ cals. I consider myself pretty fit (runner, stationary bike, functional strength) but I am also a desk worker. My move goal varies from 450 (rest/yoga days) to 700 (long run days). Some days I barely meet those goals.

Do you workout 2-3 hours a day or do you have a physically demanding job?

Just finished my very first Half Marathon at age 57!

I started using Runna last Fall and was planning on running a HM last October. However, I way over estimated the effort required and ended up injuring myself. (IT Band issues). Ended up downgrading to a 10K. While I finished fine, I was still a little disappointed.

After working on my knee and gradually easing back in to running. Once I was confident that I could run relatively pain free, I signed up for a spring HM and did a 16 week plan with Runna. had to scale back about half way through the plan as my IT Band started to flare up again.

But, I made it to today. I had few goals for today:

  • Make it to the start line
  • Make it to the finish line
  • Come close to my estimated finish time (Runna 2:00-2:05, Strava 2:04)

I planned to find the 2:05 pacers and run with them for at least the first half of the race, and then, if I was feeling good, pick up the pace.

Race weather was perfect. Temperatures in the mid 40s at start. I had debating going shorts/short-sleeve shirt or long sleeve. Ended up going with the short sleeves and glad I did.

Start was crowded, the start was on a two lane driveway and, for some reason, the race organizer felt it a great idea to put all the sponsor tents in one of the lanes. This bunched everyone up. Plus this was a combined Full and Half Marathon, so lots of runners.

Once I got to the start line, I was able to find a little bit of space to run. The 2:05 pacers were ahead of me. I was able to dodge a bunch of slower runners and by mile 1 was able to catch up the 2:05 pacers. At that point, I was feeling really good and decided to see what I could do. I keep my pace up. By mile 3, I was feeling really good. The course was an out and back, with a few spurs so, by mile 5, I was starting to see some of the lead runners. However, because the course was in a forest preserve, the trail was a two line bike path. Had to dodge people running two or three across.

Checking my watch, I realized that I was trending to a 2:00 time. I figured I would keep at this pace as long as could and see if a 2:00 was even possible (2:00 was my very stretch goal.) About mile 6, started to feel a little bit of IT Band aches, nothing of concern though. By mile 8, I had caught the 2:00 pacers and passed then.

As I passed mile 10, I said to myself "I have now run farther than I ever have done in a single run. The last 3 miles were mostly a straight run on a two lane road. With the open space, I was able to keep turning up my speed. Hit mile 12 and decided it was time to turn up the speed.

Crossed the finish line and looked down at watch. Just a few seconds over 1:55. This was a time that I never even thought was possible for today. More impressive, to me at least, is that I negative split most of my mile splits, including running mile 13 a full minute faster than mile 1.

Thanks to Runna for helping me achieve this. I will be signing up for another HM in the Fall (maybe 2!) and then decide if I want to attempt a full.
