Casual grade should be able to reach research grade too

Is there a reason it can’t? a lot of plant photos that can have scientific value aren’t wild caught, and some of the genetic modifications people achieve with certain plants will never reach “research grade” due to this.

Simply don’t put in geographic data for these plants if the concern is getting in the way of tracking their natural spreading.. but where they spread is also only a small part of the scientific game for describing these things

Why do all insects have 6 legs? Or spiders 8?

im getting into taxonomy/evolution and sort of hung up on this. I know legs can be a good indicator for determining class but why are legs so consistent when other features aren’t? like if two different insects can evolve to look radically differently, and even use their legs differently, why couldn’t they just drop/gain legs all together? This goes for spiders too (idk enough about other arachnae to inquire lol), I see some where their front legs are practical not legs anymore, but why is 8 such a persistent feature?

Rabid Wolf Spider (male)

part of the reason those appendages next to its fangs (called pedipalps) are so long is because the spider injects sperm into them and then uses them to mate with the female from as far away as possible lol

they may even have a chemical that can calm the female to make it a little safer too, as to not get eaten

you can also tell it’s a male due to the front two legs being dark. They’re meant to be flash to help catch the attention of females, again from a distance

Poor beetle has ticks in its mouth

I actually didn’t even notice them until I cropped in and looked close. First time seeing this beetle so thought perhaps it was a normal feature, but nope. poor guy

You’re generally preferred magnification level for insects in the field/studio?

I have shot almost exclusively 1:1 since that is what my lens is but recently started using tubes for a 1.27x factor and i just got the dcr-250 which I think takes my 100mm lens to like 1.6-2 maybe.

I really want to get into 2x to get better compound eye details, but feel like that may be more of a tripod indoor set up. 1.27x in the field is a lot more exciting than 1:1 but without any stabilization it’s a challenge to focus too, i miss shots time to time over it

edit your* lol

I accidentally turned over an ant nest and they carried their eggs away

a chaotic scene but they cleaned it up very quickly

Weevil collecting pollen

I was in this field that had a bunch of these flowers and noticed many flowers had 2 weevils working in a circle around them. So many flowers only had 2 that it seemed like a pretty impressive network

Why is Hilbert space sometimes framed as real?

I see this often in quantum mechanics interpretation, and every now and then even experts speak like it’s some kind of actual feature in reality even if we only have a mathematical description of it. As if it is not a *physical* space but it is not *only* a mathematical structure either

i know this topic is mostly philosophy but I’m curious what features exactly of these theories tend to motivate people to place so much emphasis on HS, or for it to become a relatively hot topic in metaphysics
