To make a hames of something

I muttered this to myself today, and then I started wondering, is this common saying outside of the West of Ireland?

A bit of Googlin tells me that it's used almost exclusively in Ireland.

Also, random one, but can any Irish speaker tell me if a word pronounced as oo-gawn has any meaning? My mother always used it, and it seems to have been passed down through the generations.

Jewellery repair in Mayo

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could recommended a place that repairs jewellery?

I have a little metal medal that's practically worthless but holds a lot of sentimental value that I'd love to have fixed.

Thanks in advance.

After playing Mafia II for years (my favourite game), I finally just finished Mafia DE and Mafia III

**** May contain spoilers ****

Mafia II is my favourite game of all time, the atmosphere, the music, the characters, the story, the cars. All of it is perfect, and I've played it countless times over the past few years.

I then played Mafia DE, my god, it's a masterpiece. I was expecting some slight improvement on the PS1 graphics, and not this incredibly detailed modern game. The story, atmosphere, and characters were just phenomenal. I love Ralphie's character, I would always visit him before missions. The way they made Salieri a reasonable and wise character was interesting, he gave me Paulie from Goodfellas vibes. I was expecting some brutal showdown or betrayal between him and Tommy, instead it just felt like a betrayal on Tommy's part when all the crew are brought to prison, again very Goodfellas-esque. Incredible game, can't wait to play it again.

Mafia III on the otherhand... I'll start with the positives. Great music, it really sets the scene, and the map feels very explorative. I initially liked the district takeover missions, it reminded me of San Andreas and The Godfather. It did a great job of creating an open world Louisiana, even if I imagined there would be a lot more going on in the bayou.

The bugs, glitches, and broken mechanics - Mafia III has so many issues. Mirrors....why are they all broken and glitchy? Also, several times when I finished a takeover I would return to the area informant and interact, then nothing would happen, I would have to load a checkpoint and drive back, super annoying. The NPCs were just broken, I tried to run a witness over only for them to miraculously float down the street in front of my car. And why do they keep jumping in front of your car trying to get killed when you're driving too? Also what is up with the combat on NPCs? You can just slam everyone, taking out an entire restaurant in seconds.

The repetition - it felt like every single mission after the prologue was the same, even the favours for the mob bosses, it all felt like Mafia II DLC to me. What bugged me was the weird arcade music during combat too...the twangy electric guitar...what on earth was that?

The story was so random at times and made no sense. I laughed when the priest said he planted the bomb to kill Clay - something the entire mafia organisation couldn't manage. Then there's the random court room shooting at the end and the mention of JFK, just...why?! I felt it was very cringe in parts too, when Clay says "I fought the law and I won" at the start a part of me died inside. Then his brother said "if I make it out of here I'm gonna sleep on a bed of titties" which was so random, I had to laugh.

I also really don't like the way they made Vito in Mafia III. They took away all of his charisma, and made him a depressed middle aged man with no control, who has to rely on this Clay character and beg for districts.

Also, as an Irish person, I can't say I'm overly pleased at the accents of the Irish mob, or that they made Burke a sloppy drunk. I did his first favour mission where you're stealing exotic American cars for export for the IRA in Belfast. That bright orange American car sure wouldn't look suspicious at all on the streets of Belfast.

I didn't want Mafia DE to end, and I couldn't wait for Mafia III to end. I hope that The Old Country is more like the first and second Mafia, in terms of authentic story and immersive atmosphere.
