AVRI Trem for JMJM?

Hey! Just made some fun money so looking to do some upgrades on my JMJM.

I like the pickups but want to try the Black Mass JMXLs, and then getting a Bensonite drop in bridge.

After that I can either get a pickguard or trem.

Obviously a pickguard is just aesthetic, but I'm wondering if the trem is really worth upgrading if I'm getting a new bridge.

Thoughts? Any suggestions on a different upgrade? Thanks!

EDIT- reason to change bridge and potentially trem is tuning stability when using trem. It's currently not terrible, but will go out over the course of a song with use. Will just the bridge fix that? Do I need the trem as well?

Strat Intonation Help!

Got this in a trade, thinking I'd set it up and move along.

low E, D and G are all still sharp with the saddles all the way back.

I initially tried to set it up as it was with no luck, so I ended up leveling and crowning frets, filed nut accordingly (.021-.019@ 1st fret), neck relief .010, action 6/64-4/64 no buzz, threw an extra spring on the bass side of trem, it's decked and all but basically blocked to minimize deflection when fretting. The d string pole pieces were wayyyyy up and the rest were flat, set them all flat and lowered pickups below the pick guard to avoid pull.

I'm at a loss. The last thing I want to do is move this bridge back, I don't even want the guitar. Cutting or removing springs may afford me the space I need, it's not drastic. I hear it, and it obviously shows on a tuner, but I'm not sure how much is good enough and I don't really want to sell a guitar that isn't well set up. It's playable for sure, may not be noticeable to everyone.

I don't know. Do I have any options before moving the bridge? Do I just sell it? Please help!!

NBVID: Joining the club!!

It's been a couple months now of trading and rehabbing to sell gear trying to work my way into a Bass VI. It's a pretty slim chance that someone wants what you have and has what you want, so I did a lot of lateral trading in the mean time, and was kind of biting my nails expecting that I wouldn't be happy with it until I dropped another few hundred on a bridge and strings, after which I'd have a decent amount of set up to do.

Well guess what, I made an even trade today, and this guy already has a mastery bridge and vibrato! All set up too, I just brought it home and it's perfect!

Now I just have to get my head around how to work my board.

I mainly play guitar, and that's what my board is set up for. It's straight forward (Slow Loris [which sounds incredible with the VI]->Benson Boost->Phase 90 ->Halberd->Foxcatcher->mother preamp->hxfx).

Anyone have any advice for a generally guitar centric setup? Like do you have standard eq tweaks you make? You have a separate board? What's on it? I'm all ears!

Thanks!!

NGD: Hondo 767 (for $50)!!

I truly never thought I'd own a V style guitar. Could not be further from my style. But when you see a $50 guitar, you check it out, and this one seemed well worth it.

Electronics initially were spotty but cleared up beautifully with deoxit.

Pickups seem fine. Other than a cheap hss Strat with a filtertron and Gretsch mini-hums I have literally no experience with humbuckers. I also haven't put strings on yet, so we'll see how I like them, but they're functional.

Fretboard was the biggest task, not that it was huge. Reseated two fret ends, leveled and crowned. That's where I'm at now. Neck feels good to play.

Tomorrow I'll get it set up, which should be pretty straight forward, everything looks in good enough shape for it to be a simple set up.

Woman selling it had "needs to be rewired" in the description, by which she meant it needed strings. Once I realized this I was starting to worry about the kind of shape this thing was in, considering the owner knew very little about what was happening.

I'm very pleasantly surprised, though, about how good of shape this 45 year old, $50 guitar is in.

Regardless of how I like the pickups, I think I'll hold onto this guy, maybe just swap out if I decide I don't love them.

Was just very excited about this find, I love old gear, and finding something cheap that isn't a huge project is very satisfying.

Wish me luck on my journey down the road of the Flying V!

Wanting to replace a set of Gretch Minis in a CVT3. Honestly not even particularly worried about them being the same style as each other, mostly just looking to avoid routing if possible and experiment with some pickups I otherwise wouldn't seek out

Taurus Servo experiences?

Anyone out there using this guy?

I run a Science Mother Pre into either an IR or tube amp return and I'm wondering if this might liven things up a bit, particularly when going direct.

The Mother does a great job of being interactive with playing dynamics, I'm not necessarily lacking in that department, but adding a tube to a mostly solid state and digital setup is a very attractive idea to me, plus this model could potentially replace my compressor and boost pedals.

I play edge of breakup to mid gain, typically. Once in a while I might go over the top, but that's usually with a fuzz pedal or something, I wouldn't be pushing into a high gain amp.

Any experience or advice welcome, thanks!

Vox style preamp pedals

Using a Simplifier Mk2 and like it for the most part, but discovered that I kind of prefer bypassing the cab and using an ir. With that I'm probably going to make the jump to a preamp pedal.

Been looking at DPE DC30, Victory Copper, Greer Royal Velvet, Tubesteader Roy.

Not married to a tube preamp, just something that will work well into an ir and into a power amp since I do both.

Suggestions requested.

Klone suggestions

Got the horsebreaker in a trade thinking it may also replace my Foxcatcher. That it won't, not in love with the BB side, but my god, the klon is incredible.

Easy, I thought I'll just buy Ceriatone's Klon pedal. Turns out that's bigger than this is.

I have a Tumnus and just cannot like it when I a/b it with the Centura circuit.

The BB side is fine as a boost, but I don't really need it and need a smaller pedal for my board. So I'm here for suggestions.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a regular sized klon circuit that measure up to the Centura?

Thanks!!

Verification for JMJM wiring mod

Plan is to replace rhythm volume with 1M, that's simple, just swap and change cap.

The more complex part is that I want to remove the lead tone and give each pickup a volume.

I know it's not particularly hard, just a lot of wires going, so I just want to verify that the diagram I drew up is accurate. Second photo is my reference for traditional wiring.

Also, with no tone I'm changing the lead circuit volume pots, I like jangle, does it make sense to do 500 for neck and 250 for bridge? I know many people change both to 250, but I honestly like the brightness in the neck, plus they're not typical JM pickups.

Thanks!

Opinions on mods

Hey so I've got a JMJM, it's my main guitar I use regularly because I love it so much.

I'm considering a couple of mods.

1st is changing the rhythm circuit to 1M pots, this is common and I'm not conflicted about it, the traditional circuit is unusable for me.

2nd is 500k pots for the main circuit, again, not terribly conflicted here, I leave the tone open and compensate with my amp/drive eq's. I wouldn't mind having it a little less bright and with the 1st mod I would still have a 1M pot on the neck.

Now, the one I'm not so sure about-I'm considering scrapping the tone pot altogether, as I don't use it, and having separate volumes for each pickup in my main circuit. This would let me essentially have 3 independent configurations of sound at any time. Basically using the neck and bridge as you would in an LP, but having an entirely additional brighter neck setting.

I'm not really asking about the technical elements of the mods, really just if anyone has thoughts, concerns, any drawbacks?

Anyone done it and have input.

Thanks!!

Edit: actually, kind of separately, has anyone loved the JMJM pickups and found an upgrade that kept the same vibe but they loved even more? I don't have a problem with the stock pickups, but getting an itch to switch them, so just curious.

Easiest course?

New pickups are like 3/8" taller than existing, which puts them too close to the strings. Would it be best/easiest to route out or shim the neck? Routing in comfortable with, shimming I've never done, but seems pretty straight forward.

Thanks!

EDIT: 3/64, not 3/8...

Help with wiring.

Gretsch Electromatic CVT 3. Got this today. Switch soldering needs repair, but I'm a little confused on what's happening. Only info I could find says the 3-way selects individual pickups, but I don't understand how this is happening (if it's happening, by ear that's suspect). Can't find any diagrams of what this would look like. My very amateur assessment is that it's neck/middle, all three and bridge, which definitely the middle position sounds like two pickups at once.

Anyway, any help is appreciated, will probably put in a switch or pot for middle pickup eventually.
