I’m honestly at my wit’s end with my Silhouette Portrait 4 and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced the same issues.

My biggest problem is the registration marks. It constantly fails to read them, seemingly for absolutely no reason.

For example, I’ll print a page, load it exactly how I normally do, and it won’t read the registration marks. I’ll leave it for a few hours, come back, do the exact same thing, and suddenly it reads them perfectly.

Even more frustratingly, it might read the registration marks and cut a page perfectly. Then I’ll put through the next page from the exact same file, do everything exactly the same way, and suddenly it can’t read the registration marks anymore.

And when it finally DOES read them, I’m having another problem: the cuts are often inaccurate.

What’s really frustrating is that if the machine doesn’t register correctly on the first attempt, it seems like the eventual cut is often inaccurate too. I’m using the exact same file in Silhouette Studio and deliberately not changing anything in the software between attempts.

I’ve wasted SO much sticker paper because of this, and the paper itself is expensive. More importantly, I’ve lost hours of working time just trying to get this machine to read registration marks and cut properly.

I’ve tried the usual things like making sure the registration marks are clear, loading the mat correctly, checking the print/cut settings, etc., but I feel like I’m constantly fighting with the machine.

At this point I’m seriously considering getting a different cutting machine because I’m so frustrated with it.

Has anyone else experienced this with the Portrait 4? Is there something I could be doing wrong, or is this just a common issue with these machines?

And if I do decide to replace it, what would you recommend for around €200? I mainly use it for print-and-cut stickers, so accurate registration and cutting is really important to me.

I’d really appreciate any advice because I’m honestly ready to throw this thing out the window 😭

I'm a developer (not a machine owner) looking into material waste in cutting. People in other cutting communities told me the same thing: the biggest waste isn't how designs are packed on a fresh sheet, it's that leftover scraps end up as awkward shapes the next job doesn't fit on. I also heard Silhouette has nesting in Designer and Business, while Design Space mostly relies on its automatic mat layout.

The idea I'm weighing: a free web tool where you upload your SVGs, pick your mat size or the size of a scrap, choose tidy rows or maximum packing, and download an SVG ready to bring into Design Space or Studio.

Before I build anything:

1. Do you reuse scraps, or do they mostly end up in the bin?

2. How do you fit a new cut onto a leftover piece today?

3. Would a tool like that save you real time or material, or is dragging things by hand good enough?

Nothing to link, nothing to sell. Just trying to find out if this is a real problem.

I’m looking to make personalized embossed notebooks, and I have a silhouette cameo with the embossing tool but it’s absolute junk. What would be a more effective way to create personalized embossed stationery? I’ve seen all of the die cutting machines that can also embossed but it looks like they just do images or logos.

If anybody has any suggestions I would be so grateful!!

As the title says, I just got my first Silhouette Portrait 4 and I'm looking for anything a new user should know - capabilities, limitations, potential problems that might come up in day to day usage, etc. Also something a bit more specific: I'm wanting to do print and cut stuff, like individual stickers or sticker sheets, so do I absolutely need registration marks or can I theoretically eyeball it in the software if I've got enough of a border around my stickers?
