Supergirl (2026) is not as bad as the internet makes it out to be

I went in with very low expectations, given what I've read and video reviews that I've seen (especially the one by The Critical Drinker who just lambasted the film). And yes, there are many things that seemed wrong/improbable to me, but the overall experience is alright.

Let's start with the positives. The film is worth a watch and maybe a rewatch in 5-6 years. The story hits a couple of emotional points and the lead actress is relatable (at least to me. I don't get the hate surrounding Milly's character.) Supergirl has an arc in this film. At the start, she's kinda this nihilistic, punk, devil-may-care, young adult who's dealing with a trauma through excessive alcohol and constant numbness. If this is not relatable, I don't know what is. At least to me. I connected with this aspect of her personality a lot.

Now the negatives. Well, there are quite a few of them the main one being the plot. It feels really-really forced a lot of the time and it's best to just not think too much over certain points. Here they are:

  1. Why would Krem, whose band hunts after girls, not kidnap Ruthye (seriously, this is the most alien-sounding name they could think of?) after slaughtering her family?

  2. Krem poisoning Krypto and the whole quest to find the antidote, which is a blatant mcguffin but let's not act like it's the only film with such a device. Come on now. It's a bit too much on the nose though.

  3. This leads me to the questions of why Krem would have kryptonite darts and his band's hq would be on a green sun planet. Does he know about Superman so he took preventative measures? Why? He clearly does not know about Supergirl. And everyone thinks all Kryptonians died when the core of the planet collapsed anyway? Too many uncomfortable whys.

  4. Lobo's appearance in the film was clearly fan service and maybe an attempt to get enough interest for a solo film about Lobo. Period. I'm willing to die on this hill. Even though, Jason Momoa is doing a good job.

  5. The brigands who captured Ruthye on their band's hq planet didn't search the surrounding area? R u for real now? It feels like, at this point, the writers weren't trying at all.

Now, a couple of personal grievances of mine: 1) CGI Krypto looks "hell no", "what the fuck is that", "get that thing off the screen". I know it's hard to make a fully CGI aninal but I'm entitled to have this opinion; 2) Milly Alcock can't play drunk convincingly. Again, it's not that it's easy but you'd have hard time persuading me she's behaving like drunk person in those scenes at the start.

Overall, the film is not perfect but it is not as bad as critics and haters make it out to be either. There have been worse releases. I especially don't get the flak that Milly Alcock and her character are getting. Again, there have been worse potrayals and performances and this one is alright. I could relate to Supergirl a lot.

What’s up with the Late Bronze Age collapse?

So, the Greeks infiltrated Troy, pillaged the city, killed Trojans thus somehow breaking Zeus’s law (as I understand, the one about treating strangers the way you want to be treated), which somehow started the civilization collapse which Odysseus keeps talking about like it’s a thing he somehow figured out. How exactly did this work? Additionally, wouldn’t such knowledge and conclusion require grand historical perspective which contemporaries don’t have

Edit: Zeus is weird about humans backstabbing in this iteration cuz he literally betrayed and mutilated his horrible father. Anyway Greek gods are corrupt af so doesn’t matter

Is the reptile species from Death Valley the same kind as the aliens from S2 Asylum?

I've just watched S10 for the first time. One thing that I kept pondering on is whether they will link the two alien species because - come on! - the connection is right there. S2 storyline ended with the two babies born from alien insemenation becoming prominent professionals in their respective fields and I thought how cool it'd be if they picked that storyline up somehow in S10, which they frustratingly didn't in any open manner. Well, perhaps the second alien reptile species is how S2 and S10 are connected. At least that would be very intriguing. At least they had a field that with every conspiracy theory in Death Valley

Why on Earth would they want to make Sarah Paulson's character British in S6 Roanoke?

I'm not saying that acquiring and using a certain accent is easy. It's not. But hell why would they have Sarah Paulson be British if she couldn't do the accent very well. Especially, in action scenes. Man, you don't sound British by saying bloody and "kant" once in a while

Has anyone here ever got a decent, real job offer through LinkedIn?

I have a dormant LinkedIn account with 600+ "followers" (not an engaged audience but the kind of network where everyone follows everyone for the sake of following). I am considering whether to spend time on revitalizing my account so as to benefit in my search for the next job. Honestly, I dislike the idea of spending time on that corporate Instagram wanna-be garbage but I can if it means better job prospects.

Faces of Death (2026) It's okay-ish

Watch it for the gore. Don't overthink certain blatant plot points like having to get "the evidence", cops just hightailing after a 911 call WITHOUT a follow-up or sth and the MC conveniently having the only type of cell phone that can take neither pictures nor screenshots in 2026.

It was nice to see Rita again

The Testaments has been a mixed bag for me so far. It certainly failed my expectations in several ways. But then it goes and does something like bringing back a character or make a nice improvement on the source material.

Last March, news came out that the government program rewarding physical activity with money will be renewed starting May 1. Today is May 4 and crickets so far. Anyone know what's going on?

Of course TT couldn’t help sucking up every word of A. Lydia’s backstory from the book cuz, honestly, this was the best part of her Testament. But she already had a backstory roughly outlined in THT. Here’s where math isn’t mathing:

  1. Aunt Lydia’s no longer portrayed as a bitter and lonely woman with conservative views on motherhood and children upbringing. I liked how THT portrayed her hardening by Lydia switching her hairstyle to reserved and pulled up (see in post). In TT, she’s back to her loosely flowing hair. Her disposition and mindset that felt somewhat primed

for accepting Gilead is not present and she’s portrayed as one of the regimes victim who faced with the choice between death and cooperation and conformation choose the latter.

  1. In TT Judd asking A. Lydia to weigh in on the material for Aunt uniform portrays her as one of the cofounders. In THT A. Lydia is portrayed as one of the respected aunts but there’s not much that separates her from the rest of them. THT doesn’t show her as the founder cuz the show did not intend her to be one or just didn’t care about this bit. So, now her being one of the originals feels at odds with the Lydia we knew before.

There’s however one good thing that came out of this and it was right before the writers’ noses so they’d be imbecilic not to use it as a tie-in

Suppose he's the Nick of TT because of all the parallels between these two characters. Maybe he's one of the Eyes because in TNT the rumor was that all commanders' drivers are Eyes. Granted Garth is a Guardian for the Mackenzies. But ep 6 set him up for a promotion to a Commander at such a young age, just like Nick. What would be even cooler is if he turned up to be a double agent loyal to Gilead and luring out Mayday operatives. It would be a cool twist
