AITJ for ruining a prestigious opera premiere to launch two unknown singers' careers?
I (45 M) work as a business manager/promoter in the opera world. Recently, I came into a large sum of money to help the New York Grand Opera Company. The company's director, Gottlieb, is a pompous snob. He used my funding to sign Lassparri, a world-famous but incredibly arrogant tenor.
Lassparri is an absolute nightmare. He physically assaults his dresser, treats everyone like dirt, and is trying to force himself onto a beautiful young soprano named Rosa. Rosa is actually in love with a brilliant, unknown chorus singer named Ricardo.
Gottlieb refused to give Ricardo a chance because he isn't "famous." So, my two associates and I decided to take matters into our own hands. We smuggled Ricardo, Rosa, and ourselves onto the ship to New York inside huge steamer trunks.
On opening night in New York, Lassparri was set to perform Il Trovatore. We decided to orchestrate a bit of "creative disruption" to show the world what a farce this company is:
- We switched the orchestra's sheet music so they accidentally played Take Me Out to the Ball Game during the overture.
- We played actual baseball in the orchestra pit.
- My associates hung from the stage ropes and constantly changed the backdrops, forcing Lassparri to sing in front of a painted railroad station.
- We physically kidnapped Lassparri mid-performance.
With the lead tenor missing, Gottlieb was desperate. We forced him to put Ricardo on as the substitute. Ricardo and Rosa sang together, and the crowd absolutely loved them. They became overnight sensations.
We did eventually return Lassparri, but the audience booed him off the stage because he was so terrible compared to Ricardo.
Now Gottlieb is furious, Lassparri's career is in jeopardy, and the opera board is threatening legal action for the property damage and chaos. My associates think it was a masterpiece, but a few traditionalists say we crossed the line and ruined a high-society event.
So, AITJ for sabotaging a grand opera?
That's an actual video by the way, also I stole this meme.
