The Sacrifice You Keep Claiming?

We had another argument with my dad.
And once again, he brought up his sacrifices.
He always does.
Whenever we disagree, whenever we try to defend ourselves, he reminds us of everything he has done for the family. He tells people how much he sacrificed, how much he provided, how much we should be grateful to him.
But this time, I couldn't stay quiet anymore.
Because I kept thinking about my mom.
What about her sacrifices?
Why does everyone talk about his sacrifices as if my mom didn't give everything she had too?
She worked abroad just to provide for us. She spent years away from home. She worked day and night while we were growing up. We studied while carrying our own struggles, and she worked thousands of miles away because she wanted us to have a better life.
She missed birthdays.
She missed ordinary days.
She missed being there when we needed her.
And yet she still kept going.
She sacrificed her own comfort, her own time, and parts of her own life for us.
Then one day, during the argument, my dad even pointed toward my mom's burial photo and said that we should be grateful to him.
That broke something inside me.
I told him:
“Why should we only be grateful to you? What about everything Mom did for us?”
I told him that he should be grateful to her too.
Despite everything he had done to her.
Despite the way he treated her.
Despite all the pain she endured, she still chose to stay and forgive.
She let go of so many things because she loved him.
But what did she receive in return?
More pain.
More hurt.
More reasons to cry.
How can you keep telling us how bad and ungrateful we are when you never stop to ask yourself what kind of father you were to us?
Were you really a good father?
Were you really a good husband to Mom?
Because growing up, I don't remember feeling loved the way a child should feel loved by a father.
What I remember are the curses.
The shouting.
The humiliation.
Being embarrassed in front of other people.
Being made to feel small.
And whenever I finally turned around and defended myself, suddenly I became the ungrateful child.
Suddenly, everything became my fault.
But I remember Mom differently.
In my entire life, I don't remember her raising her voice at me the way you did.
She never needed to curse at me to make me understand that I had made a mistake.
If I did something wrong, she would talk to me quietly.
Privately.
She would explain what I did wrong instead of humiliating me in front of everyone.
That is the kind of parent I remember.
That is the kind of mother she was.
And maybe that's why losing her hurts so much.
Because I didn't just lose my mother.
I lost the one person who made me feel safe.
So when you point at her picture and tell us to be grateful to you, I can't help but feel angry.
Because I know what she sacrificed.
I know what she gave up.
I know how hard she worked.
And I know how much she loved us.
You always tell everyone that you're an educated person.
You remind us of your education as if having a degree automatically makes someone a good person.
But education isn't just about what you learned in school.
It's also about how you treat people.
How you speak to your family.
How you control your anger.
How you respect your wife.
How you make your children feel.
So sometimes I want to ask you:
What is the point of being educated if you don't know how to treat the people who love you with kindness?
I know I have said harsh things.
I know sometimes my words come out full of anger.
But there is a reason behind that anger.
There are years of pain behind it.
Years of swallowing words.
Years of staying quiet.
Years of watching things happen and telling myself to just endure it.
I'm not trying to say that I am perfect.
I'm not.
I've made mistakes.
I've said things I regret.
But I'm tired of being told that I'm ungrateful every time I finally speak about how I feel.
I am not asking for a perfect father.
I never needed one.
I just wanted a father who could listen without shouting.
A father who could correct me without humiliating me.
A father who could admit when he was wrong.
A father who could look at his children and understand that we were hurting too.
And most of all, I wish you had understood how much Mom sacrificed.
Because while you keep counting everything you gave, we remember everything she gave.
And maybe that's the part that hurts the most.
She's no longer here to defend herself.
Her picture is the only thing we have left.
So when you stand there and tell us to be grateful, I can't help but look at her photo and think:
“Mom, I saw everything you sacrificed. I know how much you gave. And I'm sorry you had to endure so much.”
I will never forget her.
And I don't want her sacrifices to disappear just because she isn't here anymore.
You can tell everyone whatever story you want.
You can tell them how much you sacrificed.
You can tell them how ungrateful your children are.
But I know my own story.
And I know hers.
She gave us everything she had.
And I will always remember that.

If I Could Turn Back Time

One day, someone asked me a question I never expected to hear:
“If you were given a chance to turn back time, what would you change?”
I didn't have to think for long.
I said, “Everything.”
Not because I resent my life. Not because I blame my mom. And definitely not because I wish I had never known her.
If anything, it's the opposite.
If I could really turn back time, I would go back to the time when my mom was still young. Back when she was still in college, before life became so difficult for her, before she had to sacrifice her own dreams just to survive.
And if I had the power to change history, I would make sure she never met my dad.
I know that sounds painful to say.
But if changing that one thing meant giving my mom a better life, I would do it.
I would let her finish her studies.
I would let her reach the dreams she once had.
I would let her travel, enjoy her youth, and experience the life she deserved.
I would give her the chance to marry someone who would truly love her not someone who would make her life harder, but someone who would hold her hand through everything and treat her the way she deserved to be treated.
Maybe then she wouldn't have needed to sacrifice so much.
Maybe she wouldn't have spent so many years working far away from home just to give us a better future.
Maybe she could have lived a long, peaceful life.
Maybe she could have reached 80.

Maybe even 100.
And maybe, in that version of the world, I wouldn't exist.
And honestly?
If my existence had to disappear for my mom to have a better life, I think I would choose that.
Not because I don't value my life.
But because I know how much she sacrificed just so I could have mine.
She gave so much of herself to us.
She gave up years of her life.
She worked far away.
She endured loneliness.
She carried responsibilities that should never have been hers alone.
And when I think about all of that, sometimes I wish I could go back and give her the life she never got to have.
I wish I could tell the younger version of her:
“You don't have to sacrifice everything. You deserve happiness too.”
Maybe that's the kind of time travel I would want.
Not to change myself.
But to save her from the things that hurt her.
To give her the years she lost.
To let her become the woman she wanted to be before she became someone's mother, someone's provider, and everyone's source of strength.
But there is one thing I know for sure.
Even if I could change everything, even if I could rewrite our entire history, even if I had a thousand different lives to choose from...
I would still choose her.
Over and over again.
In every lifetime.
I would still want her to be my mom.
Because despite everything that happened, she gave me something no one else could ever give me—the chance to exist, to love, to dream, and to know what it feels like to call someone “Mom.”
Maybe I wasn't meant to rewrite our past.
Maybe all I can do now is carry the love she left behind.
Sometimes I imagine that one day, somewhere beyond everything I understand, I'll see her again.
And I won't waste that moment.
I'll run to her.
I'll hug her.
And I'll finally tell her everything I've been carrying inside.
“Mom, I missed you so much.”
“I'm sorry for all the things I couldn't say.”
“Thank you for everything.”
“I love you.”
And maybe she'll smile at me the way I remember.
Maybe she'll tell me that she's okay.
Maybe she'll tell me not to blame myself for the things I couldn't change.
I can't turn back time.
I can't rewrite her story.
I can't give her all the years I wish she had.
But if love could cross time, then I hope she knows this:
If I had to choose my mom again, in this life or the next, I would choose her every single time.
And if there is another life waiting somewhere beyond this one, I hope we find each other again.
Not as mother and child carrying pain and responsibilities
but simply as two souls who finally have enough time to love each other without having to say goodbye so soon.

A drift

My life now feels like a boat drifting in the middle of the ocean.
The engine is still running.
The boat is still floating.
But I don't know where I'm going anymore.
There was a time when I had a destination. I knew what I wanted from life. I had dreams I wanted to achieve, goals I wanted to reach, and people I wanted to make proud.
I used to believe that if I worked hard enough, sacrificed enough, and kept moving forward, eventually everything would make sense.
But life doesn't always follow the plans we make.
Somewhere along the way, the storms came.
One after another.
I experienced losses I wasn't prepared for, goodbyes I never wanted, and pain I didn't know how to carry. I kept telling myself to be strong because that's what I had always done.
I became used to carrying responsibilities even when I was already tired.
I learned how to smile when I wasn't okay.
I learned how to say, “I’m fine”even when deep inside, I was falling apart.
And eventually, I became so focused on surviving that I forgot what I was supposed to be living for.
That's when I realized I was no longer steering my own boat.
I was simply letting the waves decide where I would go.
Some days, the ocean is calm. I wake up, work, talk to people, and continue with my responsibilities. From the outside, it probably looks like I'm doing fine.
But there are nights when everything becomes quiet, and I realize how lost I actually feel.
I look back at the person I used to be and wonder where they went.
The person who had so many dreams.
The person who could get excited about small things.
The person who believed that someday all the sacrifices would be worth it.
Sometimes, I miss that person.

My Mother’s Love

Hi, I'm Sam.
This isn't just a horror story. It's the most unforgettable experience of my life one that still makes me cry whenever I remember it.
It all started in March 2025, when my mom passed away after being in a coma for weeks.
Losing her was the biggest downfall of my life. It felt like half of me disappeared the moment she took her last breath.
I questioned God every single day.
"Bakit siya pa? Bakit ang mama ko sa lahat ng tao?"
The painful part was that we barely got to spend time together.
For almost my entire life, she worked as an OFW in Dubai just to provide for us. Dahil sa sakripisyo niya, natapos kami ni kuya sa pag-aaral at naging maayos ang buhay namin.
I was always proud of her.
And when it was finally our turn to give back to let her rest and enjoy life with us and spoil her with everything
God took her away.
1Year passed, but the pain never left.
One afternoon, I found myself in Pasay. There's something about me that almost no one knows.
Even at 28 years old, I still don't know how to cross a busy road by myself.
I'm terrified of vehicles.
So I stood on the sidewalk for almost thirty minutes, hoping someone would cross so I could simply follow them.
But no one did.
I was getting frustrated and embarrassed.
Then suddenly, a woman in her early thirties approached me.
She smiled gently and asked,
"Kailangan mo ba ng tulong nak?"
I nodded.
Without saying another word, she walked beside me and guided me safely across the street.
When we reached the other side, I thanked her over and over again.
She simply smiled.
Then she turned around and crossed back to the other side alone.
Before leaving, she stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and waved at me.
I waved back.
But then...
Something changed.
Her face slowly transformed.
The smile...
The eyes...
The way she looked at me...
It became so familiar.
My heart almost stopped.
It was my mom.
The same face I had been longing to see again for almost a year.
Standing there.
Smiling.
Waving at me.
Tears immediately rolled down my cheeks.
I heard her voice so clearly in my mind.
"Anak, I love you. Take care of yourself."
Without thinking, I wanted to run back to her.
I stepped toward the road.
But fear took over me again.
I froze.
I looked away for only a second to check for passing vehicles.
When I looked back...
She was gone.
No woman.
No crowd.

trace that anyone had been standing there.
Only the empty sidewalk.
I stood there crying, unable to move.
Maybe it was just my imagination.
Maybe grief was playing tricks on my mind.
Or maybe...
A mother's love is so powerful that even death couldn't stop her from crossing one last road just to make sure her child got safely to the other side.
And until today, whenever I'm afraid or lost, I remember that gentle smile and those final words.
"I love you. Take care."
