Advice for not having to pee during a one-person show?

I'm going to be doing a series of one-hour, one-person shows, and I'm pretty worried about having to pee! Do those with more experience have any advice in terms of how long before the show to stop drinking fluids, and/or other ideas to make sure I don't have to briefly run off-stage (or worse) during the show?

Status / fate of Valley Heat?

I am a newcomer to the Rancho Equestrian district, both the regular episodes and the MaxFun "Good Morning Burbank" bonuses. Is Valley Heat on long-term hiatus, has it been wrapped up, or is it still up in the air? It seems to have had long hops between episodes before.

Frontenac Cycle and Graham are awesome.

Just calling out a great local business. I'm part of the Kingston Fringe this year, and somebody coming from out of town was asking around for a bike they could use while here, so I offered my wife's old bike (she doesn't ride any more, and the bike is just gathering dust because we haven't donated it to a bike-repurposing place around town yet). She's 5'6", he's 6'1", and the seat adjuster had some weird sort of screw in it neither of us could figure out, so I suggested he roll past Frontenac to see if Graham could help explain what the screw type was.

15 minutes later, I get a text that (a) Graham diagnosed the problem gratis; (b) offered the visitor a second, better, loaner bike for free; and (c) would take the bike and donate it to a local bike charity for me if that was what I wanted to do.

This is the kind of thing you get when you have local shops with local owners -- Graham's also spearheaded some anti-bike-theft initiatives and is all 'round a good dude. Shop local!

Short film festivals: what do you do about credits?

I'm seeing a lot of promising short films for a festival I'm working on with a friend, but the recurring problem is we'll get 4-minute submissions that will be ~180 seconds of movie and ~60 seconds of credits. Sometimes the same problem at the front -- a 4-minute feature will have ~45 seconds of "production company logo" stuff off the top.

Just wondering how more experienced folks deal with this.

Note from the CJAI board of directors (June 24)

https://www.cjai.ca/special-meeting/board-message

A follow-up from this post.

I don't have any direct connection to the station nor any insight beyond what I've read here, in the Whig article, etc., in case anyone is wondering. I am a listener of CJAI (and CFRC) and wanted to share what feels like more relevant developments in terms of what's going on there, especially given what looks like a soft deadline for circulating info about board nominations (see below).

To my knowledge, it's not currently possible to become a member at the station (and therefore to attend the board meeting and have a vote in Board elections). I might be wrong?

Immediately relevant (pasting from the letter linked above):

  • The only relevant agenda item to be considered at the July 13 meeting will be: “1. Election of new Directors to any currently vacant positions on the Board of Directors”;
  • All positions will be vacant and no quorum of directors are available to fill vacancies. Therefore, the members should nominate candidates for the vacant positions and fill the vacancies at the meeting. Note that a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 11 board positions will be required to be filled; and
  • To facilitate this process any members eligible to participate may email secretary@cjai.ca with any director nominations. We will circulate any nominations received on July 6, 2026. Following that date, any further nominations could be made by members participating from the floor at the meeting.
  • Details of the proxy process can be found here.
  • To confirm your membership please visit here.
  • Answers to frequently asked questions can be found here.

Urban fox (Alfred/Johnson)

Caught sight crossing the road at Alfred/Johnson; the only reason I got this close after is it was hauling ass chasing a squirrel from the back yard of the property it ran onto, and stopped at the tree I was walking past.

There are lots of good reasons to keep cats indoors; this is one of them. Foxes snack on a lot of things! There are so many rabbits around that I'm not surprised that I'm seeing some foxes too. But cats are also a snackable for these folks.

Is the Print & Copy Centre still open (in general) and open (during summer)?

I'm not so close to campus that it's easy to walk over to the Deustch building and check, and there isn't a lot of information on the Internet.

Entering/exiting the Canadian Tire on Bath

I know this probably sounds stupid, but I'm baffled by what signs apply -- are we still obeying all the "bus only" signs even though there's a very large store right there? I've been driving up a little side entrance on Bath closer to Princess, through three parking lots, and across two "lanes" that divide all the centre parking, and getting out, taking equally weird routes. Is that one intersection right by the Tire still reserved for buses?

Take it easy on the paved trail by the Woolen Mill, folks! You never know what might be around the corner.

Where should I post online / poster physically to find current & aspiring Toronto filmmakers?

A friend of mine and I are kicking off a low-budget short film festival in Kingston, Ontario. The natural lean is toward the "ketchup for blood" school of filmmaking, in the spirit of Troma, John Waters, and Takashi Miike -- and while we're up on Film Freeway etc., we're mostly getting American movies and I'd really like to get more submissions from folks within driving distance of Kingston.

I'll be heading into the city in July, with some time for postering, so I'm wondering where I should put up physical, real-world posters. The TMU and U of T campuses seem like obvious fits, but I'd love suggestions on where else in town I'm likely to find traction.

Similarly, pointers on clubs, groups, even businesses that serve local movie-makers would be great, or other businesses that specialize in horror/SF kinds of things.

The submission deadline is August 15, and the fest is September 26. There are more details at https://attackfest.ca, if that helps pinpoint what we're looking for in terms of where to post.

Call for entries (no fees!) for our no-budget, trash-loving, short film fest!

It's a short short film festival -- just two pals who love the Troma / Waters / Miike / Rudy Ray Moore level of filmmaking and the ketchup-for-blood ethos. We're renting an indie cinema out-of-pocket for six hours in September and inviting everyone to apply by August 15 (but our hope is to get a lot of good entries from driving distance to Kingston so we can stack the theatre with the people who made the movies). No submission fees. Details at https://attackfest.ca.

Attack of the $5 Film Festival is coming to Kingston!

We're going to have a one-afternoon film festival at the Screening Room on September 26, and we're hoping to screen gnarly, goofy, no-budget shorts with an emphasis on Ontario but including some from (probably) around the world.

The full details are on our site (https://attackfest.ca), but in a nutshell — we're a couple of guys from here who love short weird movies, and are renting the Screening Room in Kingston, Ontario out of pocket (we're not funded by anybody, we don't have grant money) for half a day to put on the kind of film festival we've always dreamed of seeing. There's no cost to submit movies.

Key facts:

  • Movie submission deadline is August 15, and we're hoping to make decisions around September 1
  • The Festival is at the Screening Room on September 26, from noon-6.
  • There's no "wrong" submission, and definitely no "too low quality" or "too weird" to be considered
  • We're hoping to get more submissions from people within kinda driving distance of Kingston who might come hang out for the screening and afterwards
  • This is a no-staff, no-funding, nothin' but two goofballs and a dream operation. Don't expect much.

Ahoy Brockville - a new low budget film festival is coming to Kingston just up the road, and we want your cheap, weird movies! Submission date is August 15.

What's Active Insight good for?

I just got the email about Active Insight, and I'm the furthest thing from a power user of my NAS; I'm sure I turned it on when it was free, but I don't actually have any strong recollection of what it does or how I use it.

I have two NASes -- one active, one I was gifted, that I use for backups. I get email notifications when there are system issues, I think directly from the devices, and I'm in the habit of logging in every few weeks just to take a look, check for software updates, etc.

Does Active Insight do anything I'm not aware of that adds any value here, or can I just let the subscription go as part of the great enshittification of Synology?

I LOVE my current webhost, Opalstack. but given the state of things it might be time to go Full Canadian.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/us-dhs-aclu-lawsuit-canadian-john-doe-9.7187851

I know there are many "what are Canadian hosting companies" threads in this sub, but here's what I like about Opalstack, and I'd like to find something close to this, if possible:

  • They manage domains, websites, and apps differently. You set up your domain, add site addresses to it, and then connect apps to those. As a for-instance, I can set up a redirect for a specific subdomain of my site by creating a script for the redirect and then attaching that as an app to a web address. I have a few apps that 'attach' to a number of different domain names / web addresses.
  • I can run my own Roundcube mail server (https://community.opalstack.com/d/1146-howto-run-your-own-roundcube-webmail-server-on-opalstack)

I've tried asking a few hosting services, but their "help" is either AI garbage or people who don't seem to understand what I'm asking (asking WHC about hosting a Roundcube server got me in a loop of "yes, we let you have email" answers for several minutes until I gave up).

I'm in a trap where I know JUST ENOUGH to benefit from these services, but I am absolutely NOT somebody that can code my own apps or build my own webspaces from scratch. I'd describe myself as being on the lowest end of a mid-knowledge user, if you know what I mean. I have more or less gotten the domain + site + app system down, and with detailed instructions I can do things like set up a mail server (see above). I'm not afraid of SSH but I need step by step instructions.

So this isn't a "super expert code your own app" need, but something in the middle. With my current host, I'm not locked behind a control panel, but there are guardrails, ready-to-deploy installers for things like Wordpress, etc.

Any recommendations in that area? Thanks in advance.

I've reset an older 1513+ to start from scratch with it, following these instructions (https://kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/tutorial/How\_to\_reset\_my\_Synology\_NAS\_7).

The first time through, everything worked up to and including finding it as "Configuration lost" in the Synology Assistant. The DSM installation froze at 99% for quite a while, then I got a very unhelpful "Something went wrong, reconnect" message, and couldn't reconnect to the unit nor find it using the Synology Assistant.

Turning it off and on, it was findable again, this time with the error "Migratable," and the same issue -- tried reinstalling DSM, and at some point (I'd stepped out of the room) it switched back to "Something went wrong."

Any advice on how to resolve this? It was functioning fine before the rest, I just wanted to clear it out and start fresh with it for Reasons. But the hardware all seemed fine.
