NACS Adapter

Does the genesis branded NACS adapter work for both AC and DC chargers? I ask because the one I bought for our previous EV (which we were not able to retrieve from the wreckage) had 2 different input plugs. One for AC and one for DC. The genesis one only has a single input but connects to both the AC and DC ports on the car.

Custom 3d Printed Arduino Dash

I’m one of those people for whom tinkering with the rig as as much a part of the hobby as racing.

I decided to make a full custom arduino and Simhub powered dash and spent way more time and filament on it than I care to admit. I think I’m going to replace one of the LED flags with an analog tachometer but otherwise I’m reasonably happy with how it turned out.

I know its all unnecessary overkill but, IMO, overkill is underated

23 Advanced Mint

After buying and loving a lightly used 2024 standard back in February (which was totaled in June) we’ve been shopping for another one. First time around we opted for the Standard purely for the added range but this time got a ‘23 Advanced CPO with 18k miles and so far, it’s awesome and we love the color.

Bought it sight unseen from a dealer in the DC area and had it shipped to TX.

BTW if anyone is interested in a set of OEM roof racks send me a DM.

C5 and New Nozzles

I just got 0.6 and a 0.8 nozzles for the C5 Pro. Has anyone else tried using mixed nozzle sizes? I Plan to run it with 2@0.4, one 0.6 and one 0.8.

E7 Campus aka The God of WAPs

I just want to post about what an absolute monster the $800 E7 campus is. Not to be confused with the pedestrian $500 E7. They may look the same and even have the same radio configuration but they could not be more different.

The Campus has directional antennas that, without an ounce of exaggeration, provide 5GHz coverage 100 meters (or in Murican units, 820 hotdogs) away from the AP (6 GHz at 50M). The range is unreal both sending and receiving data. Nothing else in the UniFi lineup comes close and nothing from any other vendor can touch it for anywhere near its price point. It’s only competition is the E7 Audience which forgoes 2.4Ghz entirely and adds even more 5 and 6 GHz radios. I can’t wait to get one.

Note: unless you have a yard the size of a soccer field, this is not a residential device. I do temporary networks for live events and 1 of these can replace 4 U7-outdoors.

Genesis of Santa Monica

I just want to share my recent experience and offer my congratulations to Genesis of Santa Monica for going above and beyond to maintain the reputation that used car salesmen have earned over decades of ripping people off.

I don't even live in CA, but the car we were shopping for is hard to find and they happened to have the exact spec and color, low mileage CPO car what we were searching for. We weren't even going to haggle over the price - just confirm that the car is what it says it is and I'll wire the money and arrange for transport.

Day 1: Made contact and the sales person immediately offers to do a walk around video of the car. Great! Off to a good start until I get the video and see that there are significant scratches on 2 body panels that were NOT visible in the online photos. I say thanks but no and they offer to fix the damage. I'm not thrilled but it's still the exact car, CPO, low miles and it's just paint.

Day 2: Still ready to buy so I ask for a sales quote. This is when the wheels start coming off. The sales quote is only a text message and is $6000 MORE than the listed price on their website. But, I'm arranging transport and am out of state. There can't be taxes, registration or any of that. The sales price should be basically the same as the listed price in this situation. I will still have to pay sales tax and registration in my state. I ask for a breakdown of how it went up $6000.

Day 3: they are having "technical problems" sending the actual quote.

Day 4: Crickets

Day 5: I re-engage still asking for that breakdown and finally get a bad photo of the quote on someone's computer screen. There is $3500 in BS paint coatings added, plus transport, and other fees that add up to $6000.

Day 6: Lots of back and forth with me declining their optional paint BS. It obviously hasn't been done since 2 body panels need to be repainted anyway.

Day 7 or 8: The sales manager reaches out and, after arguing about their fees, finally offers to sell the car at the listed price. But in the intervening week we had already moved on another, nearly identical one at a dealer that straight up sold it for $1000 less than listed. I didn't even ask for the $1000 discount.

Bottom line: If they had not tried to rip me off for $6k in BS and given me the runaround I would have wired the money and bought the car on day 1.

24 standard vs 23 advanced

We had a 2024 standard and loved it until a couple of months ago some kid sailed through a red light and POW. Car is totaled. We looked nationwide for another one but eventually settled on a ‘23 advanced with 15k miles. It’s also a CPO so we’ll get 3 full years of factory warranty. But I’m curious about what features we’re gaining and losing by the trim upgrade on the previous model year. Here is what I think I know:

Losing:
Range
HDA2 - the ‘23 model year only has HDA1. Practically speaking this just means it won’t do auto lane changes or adjust the lane position based on cars in adjacent lanes. It also doesn’t have corner radar sensors to help with crash avoidance.
Digital key - I didn’t even know this was a thing but apparently with the 24 you could use your phone as a key? We never did that.

Gaining:
Power and AWD (don’t really care about 0-60 time in a family oriented luxury crossover but whatever)
360 and blind spot cameras
Vented front seats
Upgraded audio
Parking assist
Leather seats

This one is also the Mint color and not white :)

C5 Pro Tomorrow

I ordered a C5 pro on July 8 and just got a notice from UPS that it's being delivered tomorrow, which is not too bad.

And it looks like an easy jailbreak and the ability to fully use vanilla Orca is now available. An I right about that or did I misunderstand? I have no interest in using their gimped fork with ads so if Im mistaken about the state of things It'll stay boxed until that changes.

Also it looks like there are still not other nozzles available? I REALLY want to install one 0.2, one 0.6 and 2@ 0.4. I mostly want the tool changer so I can immediately do a nozzle change rather than a full calibration each time. I know that you can't (yet) use multiple nozzle sizes on the same print but I'm hoping that's coming.

Used market gone

My wife and I bought a 2024 GV60 standard back in February and loved it. It had 16k miles and we paid $28k for it out the door. Not only that but at the time there were 6 similar ones for sale all with under 20k miles and within 50 miles of our house.

Fast forward 5 months and some kid goes runs a red light and blam. Car is totaled. After more than a month of searching we are about ready to give up and get something else. We had already decided we should have gotten the AWD advanced the first time so that’s what we’ve been looking for but there is 1 within 500 miles for $38k and even looking nationwide there are very few available. Under 20k miles and not black on black are the only real criteria.

Something has seriously changed since February.

THE perfect layout

I’ve been searching, for years now, for the perfect (for me) keyboard layout but have only ever seen one example and am not even certain what it’s called.

The one pictured above, which is a cheap unbranded POS with exactly nothing swappable - not even keycaps, has a 3 features that are impossible to find.

  1. Is almost exactly the same size as an 80% TKL like my crush 80. Maybe it’s an 85%?
  2. Has a numpad
  3. Has full sized shift keys so the arrow keys are now smashed against the rest of the keyboard.

If I can find one of these with my choice of switches and keycaps plus all of the other modern bells and whistles, I’ll never buy another keyboard again. The crush80 would be perfect if it just had a numpad instead of those other keys I never use. Is it feasible to machine the aluminum of a crush80 to fit the numpad? Will my dream ever come true?

Creator 5 nozzles

I just ordered a creator 5 pro. A couple questions:

  1. are there different nozzles available? I cant find any and they don’t look compatible with other models. I’d like to load it with .4, .4, .2 and .6. Not necessarily for using in the same print (although that would be cool) but I rarely need more than two colors/materials in a print but change nozzles all the time. If this can change between .2, .4 and .6 without recalibrating each time, that’s a huge time saver.

  2. I use dr Alex klipper mod on my AD5s. Are there any known plans to fully mod this to use 3rd party firmware? I haven’t run FF firmware on an AD5 since unboxing and the difference is striking.

  3. absent that, can I at least use this with the tool changers and vanilla Orca? I don’t want to use FFs fork if it can be avoided.

UDM Beast Architecture

I picked up a Beast to use with a particular client and can confirm some of the early architecture assumptions.
The internal 10gb switch is connected to the WAN backplane with one 10gb link. It’s exactly like the UDM in that respect.

Most annoying, the internal switch does not seem to support STP or RSTP at all. If you are trying to use this as a core switch/ gateway combo you can’t make it the stp root device.

Unexplained packet less

I’m curious if this happens to other people as well. A couple times a week, I’ll get that dreaded “you are experiencing network problems” message for no apparent reason. I haven’t actually been kicked from a race and it seems like it usually happens in practice or qualifying.

I have done everything I can think of to make sure the problem is not on my end.

I have google fiber 5gb connection that never drops and I usually have 10-30ms ping depending on the server.

My firewall is a UniFi UCG-Fiber and my 2.5G motherboard NIC is connected directly to the firewall which has a qos rule that prioritizes traffic from that PC. I have a 2nd 10G NIC but I disable it when racing. My CPU, GPU and memory are nowhere near overloaded and NIC is not overheating or changing its connection speed.

There is nothing in windows event viewer or anything in the firewall logs.

Is this a server side thing that just happens?

Wave P2P for fiber backup

I’m about to deploy a wireless network for a private event with ~35 APs across 3 building and some outdoor areas. I’ve done this twice before but this year the coverage area is a bit larger. I connect the 3 buildings using fiber but, for redundancy, I would really like to connect the 3rd building back to the 1st one where the gateway is so if something happens to a fiber run it would use the other link. It’s impossible to connect building #3 to #1 using fiber but there is clear line of sight at about 300M distance.

Has anyone tried this using 2 wave Picos and relying on RTSP to block that port?

FedEx Freight $5279 - Freightquote $703

I need to send 4 large boxes from Texas to California in no real hurry. Each one is about 90lbs. If I quote this through fed-ex freight, the cheapest option is over $5000. I enter exactly the same into on Freightquote and it has the exact same fed-ex freight economy service for $700. What is the catch? Is Fedex freight just broken or am I missing something?

We all knew the UDMP was WAY overdue for an upgrade but I'm a little surprised this is the direction they went and was hoping it would be targeted more toward SMBs. I don't know who this is targeting other than enthusiastic home lab users who'll never see 25gb over WAN.

  • Here are what I see as head scratchers about who the target audience is for this:
  • Who needs 25gb/s of throughput with 7500 users but also wants the security camera DVR to be onboard the gateway? Anyone who's this serious about UniFi's ecosystem would want that to be a separate device.
  • The RJ45 ports are weird. Other than one for shadow mode, why would anyone not have a core switch connected with SFP? Especially since there is no POE.

What I hoped they would release:

  • Remove the DVR functionality and include 8x10gbe ports with POE++ along with the SFP+/SFP28 ports. That would be genuinely useful as a gateway / core switch for a lot of SMBs.
