Reactionaries only see things in black & white. But with micromobility, thing are more complicated.

Thoughts on the article: Victims of e-bike crashes take aim at NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani's enforcement policy. (CBS news)

The recent QBB accident indicates that there is a clear safety issue with motorized micromobility. Fitting somewhere between cars and bikes, E-bikes and scooters don't necessarily match the existing transportation infrastructure's capacity.

But forcing the NYPD to resolve this issue is asking for more ham-handed enforcement option which will continue to pull in low level offenses against cyclists.

That's just my take. What do you think of this legal development?

What would a post-BQE NYC look like?

I love these forward thinking editorials, because they get people thinking---and talking. But in this Streetsblog editorial, amidst the worth history lesson, he sort of neglects the future part. How would traffic flow in a post-BQE NYC?

I don't need hard answers here. But as a fan of sci-fi and speculative fiction, I'm wondering about some possible futures in a post-BQE NYC.

walking barefoot at low tide

Whenever I can, I take the opportunity to leave my running shoes at home, and my sandals at the beach's edge. Running on the sand barefoot is something I enjoy.

But when the tide is low, I head out into the tidal flats. It feels just amazing on the feet, and the vista is a feast for the eye.

This is not a common opportunity for me. It requires a lot of overlapping conditions: protected beaches, tidal pattern, and high level of cleanliness (ouch!) to make it happen. But when it can, its a joy.

This is from a recent visit to Villas, NJ. Where else can you find this tidal flats where you can walk barefoot?

Horseshoe crab update?

I’m heading down to the area this weekend, with hopes to see the annual meeting frenzy on the beaches of Delaware Bay. I’m just wondering if they are still coming up in large numbers this late in June.

TLDR: how many live horseshoe crabs on the beach today?

Where was I in 2005?

It looks the same now. But it depends on the tide?

This may be a tough one.

Where did I set up my hammock today?

And why is it a historically relevant spot?

I have thus made it too easy for the likes of you expert eyed NYers!

Free Radical update?

I love my Xtracycle and want to give it a functional update. I’m OK with it looking bad, as that’s my best security against theft in NYC. It rides well, but the rear internal hub has had some skipping issues. I’m not sure if it’s the chain or the hub needs might to be replaced.

Please share a photo of your old Xtracycle, share your Xtracycle update story, or just share some advice on how best to give mine an update.

Retro Walking / Walking backwards

This Short Video sums up the many benefits better than I ever could.

I started doing walking backwards because of patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner's knee). I can't jog for a while, and when its bad I walk with a limp.

But I can walk backwards!

I started on a passive treadmill at the gym to build my confidence.

Recently I've started doing it outdoors. I use a walking path or wide sidewalk, where I can use a border line as a visual aid to keep myself going straight. I do a quick peripheral scan every 15-30 seconds, but its kind of a trust exercise. No one really wants to smash into me, so they get out of the way. It's also a great activity to do with my (forward walking) partner.

This is not for everyone. But it works for me. I can feel my legs getting stronger, and the pain from my runner's knees is slowly lessening. But I hope to keep up this habit. It's a whole new experience, and brings me joy.

Please share your own experience or questions.
