Hi guys,

Sorry if this discussion feels odd or out of place. I called it Storytime for a reason because its very much based on personal experience.

During my time at a dutch uni, I always noticed that (dutch) academics are more so promoting anarchism but not really Marxism. Often times they will quote Marx maybe once in their papers but are hostile to more organized and practicing Marxists especially when they are their students.

Have any of you also experienced something similar in academia?

Is their form of "anarchism" just a cover up to look like they are being "left-wing" or "political", when in reality it lacks any form of real world application?

Do you think that this is a way to disarm organized critique within the ivory tower?

Any book recs?

Pls don’t mention his name there are too many Nazis running around on the internet defending this guy. Already had to deal with them in here and on my real substack.

This about the guy who started the hate campaign against Jason Arday.

He is a scientific racist specializing in ethics and biology.

and he still sits at ghent university.

I hope you guys have caught up with the recent drama in the broader academic social-media community.

I don't want to focus on what happened or whether the criticism was justified. What I think is worth discussing is how we interact with people when social media turns its attention toward them.

When thousands of people are commenting, sharing, criticising and discussing one individual, it's easy to forget that there is a real person on the other side. It also makes me wonder whether some of these conflicts could have been handled differently, with more room for dialogue, accountability and humanity.

Jason Arday died by suicide. I think that should make us pause and reflect on how we treat people online, particularly when an entire social-media community turns its attention toward one person.

In any case, RIP Jason Arday.
