Things have taken a turn…

  1. Today’s harvest.
  2. The San Marzanos are coming.
  3. The Amish Pastes are not far behind.
  4. The Chocolate Cherries and Brad’s Atomic Grapes are keeping on keeping on.
  5. The Brandywines have joined the party bigly.
  6. Other slicers include more Black Krims and Green Zebras, the first Big Rainbow of the season, and my first-ever Pork Chops.

Last evening’s harvest.

A bunch of Black Krims yesterday and another couple of Ananas Noires. The Big Rainbows and Pork Chops haven’t begun to turn yet and there are a lot of Brandywines and Striped Germans in a holding pattern as well. Meanwhile, the sauce tomatoes and Chocolate Cherries keep coming.

Pics 2 and 3 are of the current counter situation at home. Time to start distributing.

The tomatoes keep coming.

My Amish Pastes and a few of the other large heirlooms (Big Rainbow, Pork Chop) are taking their own sweet time to ripen (the plants are laden) but we’re getting tomatoes at a steady tick anyway. Today, a number of San Marzanos at different stages of turning (plus a few green drops that will be turned into chutney), a couple of Striped Germans, a couple of Black Krims, and a clutch each of Brad’s Atomic Grapes and Chocolate Cherries.

The age of men is over…

The time of the Brandywine has come.

Also brought home today: some San Marzanos that had turned and a bunch of green ones that had dropped. Plus an Amish Paste, a Black Krim and a single solitary Chocolate Cherry. (Plus the inevitability that is cucumber.)

Recommended leather half-cases?

I an intrigued by the thought of putting a brown leather half-case on my Zf. There's a lot of positive feedback on the leather half-cases made by Iborrys but currently only their black one seems to be available on Amazon; B&H and Adorama don't seem to carry their products at all. There are leather half-cases from other producers on Amazon but I have no idea which of those might be good (or avoidable). Any recommendations from experience would be appreciated.

So it begins…

I was out of town for two weeks. My teenaged sons—who’ve been helping with the garden for the last 5-6 years—did a great job of taking care of our community garden plot while I was gone. Not quite as good a job of spotting cucumbers though—these Japanese cucumbers are not supposed to get quite as massive as some of these got, hiding at the back of the vines.

70-300 mm: Nikon DX vs Tamron Zoom?

Is there any compelling reason to get the Z mount Tamron 70-300 mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD zoom for for my Zf over continuing to adapt my old Nikon 70-300 mm f/4.5-6.3 AF-P DX lens with the FTZII?

A few shots taken at a wet market in Gurgaon/Delhi this evening.

I feel a little nervous posting these pics as I'm not by any means an accomplished photographer. But as I've been looking at everyone else's pics for a while, I figured I would throw some in as well.

These were taken very much on the go this evening at a wet market (mostly a fish market) in Sikanderpur in Gurgaon (a suburb of Delhi). All quick shots while trying to stay out of people's way. The lens is the 24-70/4 S. Other than having to move quickly and not always having time/space to compose shots well, the light was a challenge as pretty much every stall had more than one kind of artificial light (plus natural light). I shot everything at f8, 1/125 and let the camera decide the IS0. Adjusted the white balance etc. in NX Studio as best as I could.

Is this holster too small?

I’d meant to purchase the Think Tank Digital Holster 20 for my ZF but it seems I accidentally purchased the 10. Didn’t notice till it arrived and because of a delivery delay it’s probably not going to be possible to get a new one sent out before the trip I was hoping to take it on with just the 24-70 4S as an all-purpose lens.

Now, the camera fits with either that lens or the 50 1.8S attached, and with the bag’s bottom compartment unzipped/extended even takes the camera with my old 70-300 DX zoom + the FTZII attached. But in all cases it’s just short of a tight fit in terms of the width of the camera and it’s also a bit snug at the top. Do I ideally want a little more space between the top of the camera and the top of the holster? I may be overthinking this—it’s just that my previous case had a bit more room (though it was crappier in every other way).

This is a very good deal, right?

It seems like we got a crazy deal on an upright piano. We’d had a fairly crappy Wurlitzer for a little over a decade. It was fine for our kids as they began to learn the piano but when our tuner told us earlier this year that it was time for a new instrument we didn’t argue. He said he would keep an eye out for anything promising. Late last week he called to say there was a Yamaha piano for sale about 40 miles away for $500. He was in the neighbourhood the next day, checked it out and said it was in excellent condition. A Yamaha M500 QA, made in 1994 in Georgia. He recommended we act soon. So we put down a deposit over the weekend and it was delivered today. The delivery and the disposal of the old piano cost more than the new piano itself. It looks to be in great shape. He said to wait 3-4 weeks for a tuning but it already sounds far better than the Wurlitzer ever did.

Which leaves me with the question of how a Yamaha M500 in very good shape was available for just $500. The internet suggests these sell for $2K and up. Is that an exaggeration?

A question about tuning/set up for a new acoustic guitar

Let me preface this by saying that I know almost nothing about guitars. I recently purchased a Yamaha APX600 for my son who is getting more and more serious about the guitar (he wanted an acoustic-electric) though he is still a beginner. He likes the guitar a lot but mentioned yesterday that it goes out of tune very quickly after he plays it for a while. Is this a common thing with new guitars? If so, is it the kind of thing that would be fixed by having the guitar professionally set up or is it the kind of thing a beginner can fix themselves?

Thanks in advance.

Haneda Sky Club answering the question…

…is the Reserve Card worth it?

Well, it’s worth it anyway for me but this Sky Club is making all others look bad. Not the largest but the food is crazy. And no one taking calls on speaker. And I’m assuming Totos to the max in the bathrooms…

Immigration/baggage/customs time at CTS?

I know this kind of thing can be very variable but I'm wondering how much time I should reasonably expect to budget to get out of Chitose airport this Friday. Our flight is scheduled to arrive at 1 pm. Assuming it is on time, what's the earliest we should hope to be out of the airport and on our way to Sapporo?

I ask mostly from the point of view of figuring out lunch when we arrive. Some of the places we're looking at in the vicinity of Sapporo Station close at 3 for lunch (last order at 2.30). Is this feasible?

Anyone else suddenly having camera issues?

A few weeks ago I noticed that under certain lighting conditions my photos are coming out harshly over-exposed/washed out. It sometimes happens in bright sunlight, sometimes under bright indoor lights. There doesn’t seem to be anything I can do in those situations other than manually lower the exposure drastically, which then makes everything outside the center of the frame very dark.

Has anyone else seen this with their iPhone 13 Pro (or any other iPhone)? And more importantly, have you found a fix for it?

See attached photos. The first is a pic taken under not particularly bright lights at a street food stall tonight in Busan; the second is the closest I could get it to looking normal via the editing tools in the camera app—but the white on the rice cakes is still completely washed out.

We will be traveling from Hakodate to Haneda and then from Haneda to MSP on Delta. Our flight to the US was rescheduled to leave at 4.05 pm (originally, 4.25 pm). I was considering an ANA flight from Hakodate to Haneda that gets in at 1.25 pm. The flight appears to be usually on time (though last week there was one time when it came in 2.5 hours late). Do you think it would be a difficult connection to make even if the ANA flight came in on time? We will have checked luggage to pick up and then drop off at the Delta counter. Either way, would it be safer to just come in earlier and leave more cushion? There's a JAL flight that gets in at 11.10.
