Soft NSFW warning because There is cursing in this video and it goes into various body parts people prefer to use instead of metric.
But you can’t tell me it doesn’t fit this subreddit.

Over-pronouncing Loan-words

How do you feel about people who insist on pronouncing borrowed-/loanwords either 100% "authentic" vs without the accent/inflection of the originating language?

Where does the line blur of pronouncing a word "correctly" vs "mockery"?

I've seen some celebrities annunciate their surnames on American talk shows while others pronounce their own surnames with Americanized approximations.

Is it more acceptable to over-pronounce loanwords if English is not your first language?

Also college humor (now r/dropout) did a lot of these videos that just cracked my brain open about linguistic theories in a funny way. I'm happy to share more if anybody is interested.

Never use Shmoogle Translate on Synonyms

Wasn’t sure if this is a better fit for this sub or r/Englishlearning or r/languagelearningjerk.

I don’t typically use Google Translate for the record, but showed this to a native speaker and sides were split.

Partner’s Crush might become MY INSTRUCTOR (advice?)

Hey fellow waffles🧇.

Disclosures to get out of the way: against my better judgement I’m doing this on my main instead of a throwaway but on a subreddit I actually trust. I’m going to be super embarrassed if he finds this so hopefully I get enough advice to put my mind at ease. Please waffles, I trust you to temporarily turn off your suspicious Reddit brains until you’ve read the entire post, as I promise my guy is a good egg. I am writing this on mobile so sorry for formatting issues.

My partner is physically attracted to a lady who works at the gym that he and I go to (he pays both of our memberships, if that matters). Ngl, I also find her attractive, but I get the feeling she’s straight. I noticed he blushes and gets a bit more talkative when he talks to her. I have had a fairly decent glow up over the past year and am not nearly as insecure as I used to be, but there have been a few times when I would jokingly say “your gym-girlfriend was working the front desk today, she says hi, lol” to my partner when I got home from a workout. He, being a good sport, jokingly calls her “our girlfriend” to tease me back. Neither of us know her name (we are too socially awkward to ask) so he says that as a joke.

Apparently she asks him about me once in a while and she has said hi to me once or twice so I am sure she knows who I am and my relationship to my partner.

She’s friendly in that customer service kind of way when she works the front desk. We haven’t really had any conversations. I trust my partner and I trust his boundaries, but can y’all blame me for getting a funny feeling when I see her, idk?

I joined this gym to take specific group-workout classes (and my partner pays extra for me to do this). There is a specific class I would take once a week that’s my favourite class, but the instructor (who I often stay after class to chat with) is going on leave for like a year (happy to live in a country that actually gives a humane amount of maternity leave but I’m gonna miss that gal, she’s great!).

About a week ago, my partner came back from the gym and mentioned that he had a friendly chat with “our girlfriend” at the gym and guess who’s getting promoted from front desk to instructor of my favourite group class while the instructor is on maternity leave? Yuppp…

Idk how to feel about this, possums. The class is only taught at my gym location and I don’t want to give it up but I feel strange. I really wanted to get advice specifically because I’ve heard a lot of stories on the channel from the other woman’s perspective of “this guy likes me and it feels like his gf hates me…” and I don’t wanna come off that way or make her uncomfortable. I’ll admit I’m still a bit insecure about my ability to perform in this particular class and if you’ve ever been a beginner at Pilates/yoga, you know the body type and flexibility of the instructors.

I also want to be clear, I trust my partner and his boundaries and frankly, I’m not worried about ‘losing’ him to this woman. We are very secure in our relationship. And I don’t want to hear “emotional affair” accusations in the comments. They only interact at the gym for a couple of minutes at a time. People are going to be attracted to other people and that’s life. My guy is a good egg and we have a goofy sense of humour.

What should I do about this class though?

Thanks

Share your most Embarrassing Lacuna (Lexical Gap)

Have you ever looked up/translated a word, only to realize **you never learned that word in your first language either?**

That's a lexical gap.

My most recent one translated to *Eutrophication.*

Like yeah, I know what the concept means but I had just never heard the word for it before.

My most embarrassing one was *caravan.* I knew it meant some sort of vehicle but just never heard that word used outside of the Jurassic Park films.

Lexical gaps are kind of a silent shame, but they're quite funny.

What's the rhythm of a normal heartbeat?

What does a normal heart beat sound like?

Obligatory disclaimer: I do not expect medical advice, but I need to know how to describe this technically.

I was under the impression it's (generally) a 16th+dotted8th combo? At least that's what mine sounds like. Dah-DUMP, Dah-DUMP, Dah-DUMP...

I've listened to my fair share of heartbeats and my fiancé's heart is unlike anything I've ever heard before...

...like a syncopated quarter note that starts between the upbeats. Maybe even tied to much shorter duration like a 64th? ...DUM....DUM.....DUM like just after the "and" if that makes sense.

I thought heartbeats were always dahDUM?

Is there a better technical term for what I'm describing?

11 years of My Weight Journey

This is every weight entry from 05 Nov 2015 - 03 Jun 2026. I'm <3kg from the original goal weight I set for myself.

I think my highest weight was 87kg during my fiancé's cancer diagnosis, but NGL there were a lot of times I avoided mirrors and scales so it could have been higher.

2026 Map of Where Electricity Prices Jumped the Most USA

I’m back and I’ve really been enjoying hearing all of your stories and getting to learn a bit more about how data and geography works in this sub.
There were a lot of map updates last month and this one was posted about 5hrs ago.

Please keep these 5 things in mind regarding the map:

**Rate Hikes ≠ Total Cost:** This map displays the percentage increase over the past year, not the current total cost per kilowatt-hour, meaning states with high percentage jumps might still have lower absolute costs than historically expensive areas.

**Residential Rates Only:** The data strictly tracks residential electricity bills and does not reflect commercial, industrial, or agricultural utility rates.

**The PJM Wholesale Surge:** The dramatic spike in the Mid-Atlantic/Eastern region is largely tied to a massive 76% surge in wholesale prices within the PJM Interconnection market.

**Data Center Demand & AI:** A primary driver behind regional jumps is the surging electricity demand from new AI data center expansions, which is straining aging grid infrastructure.

**Some States Dropped:** Despite nationwide inflation, electricity prices actually decreased in a few states over the last year, including Rhode Island and Connecticut

I know it’s hard to discuss any map of the US w/o getting into politics but I’d like keep the discussion focused on the grid and infrastructure, if possible. If you distract me with other shiny-topics, I *will* spiral into another 10-tab research rabbit hole and talk your ear off about it. You’ve been warned. 😆

2026 Map of Home Air Conditioning in the USA

Hopefully not a repost, sorry if it's small (the article with the map was only published 17 hrs ago)

I'm gonna add some disclaimers so I don't upset too many American redditors up past their bedtime...

DISCLAIMERS & TRANSPARENCY NOTE:

SOURCE DATA: Derived from U.S. Census Bureau American Housing Survey (AHS) estimates. (as I've mentioned in my other posts, the U.S. census has some methods of organizing data that I don't always agree with but I am hoping this time there will be less blind spots)

ACCESS VS. USAGE: Measures housing units equipped with AC, not active daily runtime.

EQUIPMENT TYPE: Combines central air, wall units, and window units indiscriminately.

ECONOMIC BIAS: Does not track if residents can afford to run existing AC units. I know times are tough, I get it.

SURVEY LIMITATIONS: Data is subject to standard census sampling margins of error.

Map of World Press Freedom updated may 2026

Hopefully not a repost. Sorry if it's kinda small

**ETA:** while I admit, this map has blindspots when it comes to billionaire control over the media, this has **nothing to do with social media. 📢 Tweeting ≠ Professional Journalism.** this is a measure of institutional press safety, not general free expression.

The map looks strictly at the working environment for professional, card-carrying journalists and newsrooms. It does not track whether an everyday citizen can post an unpopular opinion on social media without facing legal consequences, which creates a highly distorted picture of true speech liberty in places with aggressive digital surveillance laws.

The index built on human judgment rather than pure clinical math, so the final colors on the map are heavily warped by the personal political outlooks and cultural anxieties of the people filling out the forms.

The data is not going to show you corporate self-censorship because it’s **specifically designed to catch obvious government bullies who shut down stations or lock up professional editors.**

Sorry to those of you who live in Western nations where media conglomerates quietly spike stories to please advertisers / protect stock prices. Hang in there. A country can look perfectly clean on this list simply because its corporate censorship happens behind closed boardroom doors instead of through official decree.

Self-Improvement Can Become Procrastination

10 Levels of Fake Progress

Fake progress is one of the sneakiest traps in self-improvement, because it feels productive while quietly protecting you from the part that actually changes anything. What is fake progress? It is preparation, research, planning, buying, optimizing, and talking about action without letting reality test you.

That is why it is so addictive. Watching a 2-hour discipline video gives your brain a clean story: “I am becoming better.” Saving 400 workout clips feels like building a system. Writing a perfect morning routine feels like discipline. Telling people your goals gives you a tiny social reward before you have earned the result. None of these things are evil by themselves, but they become a problem when they replace the uncomfortable step they were supposed to support.

Real progress usually has friction. You send the message, write the page, do the bad first workout, publish the imperfect post, clean the room, practice the skill for 15 minutes, or make the small decision you keep avoiding. It is not always aesthetic. It does not always feel like a movie montage. Sometimes it looks stupidly small, which is exactly why people underestimate it.

Examples:

  1. Watching editing tutorials for weeks, but never exporting one ugly first video.

  2. Building a perfect Notion dashboard, while the actual task sits untouched.

  3. Buying a course, then spending more time organizing the lessons than doing the exercises.

  4. Researching the best workout split, when a 20-minute walk would already be a win.

  5. Rebranding your project again, instead of showing it to one real person.

  6. Reading productivity books to avoid the simple task written on your desk.

The cure is not to hate planning. Planning helps when it points toward action. The problem starts when planning becomes a comfortable costume for avoidance.

A tiny real action gives you feedback. Fake progress only gives you the feeling that you are close.

Stopped Cutting My Hair (Religious Reasons)

A few years ago I made the decision to stop cutting my hair for religious reasons (it's a long story - obligatory please don't use this post as a platform for religious debates - your milage may vary - yadda yadda...)

I know at least trimming your hair is **vital** to hair health according to this sub, but that's off the table now and I'm hoping for advice on how to properly care for my hair now that it's finally growing.

and to top it all off I have both fine and curly hair (what the heck do I do with that?) that tangles and snags easily. Plus thanks to :::drumroll::: chronic illness, I've been losing my hair a bit in the front.

**Requested advice:**

How to set boundaries with hair stylists

Products (that are actually available in Europe)

Bonnets - I have never worn one before and I'm worried I'll get the wrong one. Silk? Satin? Velcro?

Diet - I've noticed some significant growth after a year of adding protein drinks. Should I include any supplements?

Protective styles - I have just been putting it in 2 tight braids out of the shower or a sidepart tight braid. Or one of those twisty towels. Sometimes I wrap it in a ribbon braid before gym. But should I be doing something more now that it's getting windy?

Heat protector? Perhaps a leave-in w/ heat protector? There is just...so much post-wash goop you're supposed to put in your hair nowadays and I don't understand it. I just got a hair dryer with a diffuser as a gift (after 2+ years of zero heat on my hair) but I'm afraid of heat damage if I'm not trimming. Maybe just medium heat setting?

This is my first post. I hope I formatted it right. Happy to answer questions if I left out any required details. Thanks!
