Opinions this argument I had

I was talking with a friend who only listens to modern classical music, he said we should stop listening to the Bach and Beethovens and those names, his argument is that if we still put them in the pedestal we make classical music a museum of something historic, he says they were foundational composers but music today is superior.

Of course I highly disagree, I argued that their music is the peak of what can be done with tonal music and music in general, that they are not just historical artifacts but timeless beauty that speaks to anyone willing to listen.

What do you y'all think? Should we move on from the Bachs and Beethovens and focus mainly on living composers, or are they still the main attraction.

Recommend me a modern jazz label

I want a label that has great talent and consistently releases bangers, my favorite genre is hard bop but like bop in general (bonus points if the label has great sound quality)

Best bach pianists today

It's time that I check other pianists than Gould, so who to check? I want something exciting, I already checked Hewitt and Schiff and found them boring to tears (just my opinion), also feel free to recommend a harpsichordist, though I'd massively prefer piano.

Recommend me some modern recordings for these pieces

Chopin: Ballades and Nocturnes
Grieg & Schumann: Piano Concertos
Brahms & Tchaikovsky & Sibelius & Beethoven: Violin Concertos
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concertos (specifically 2 & 3)
Beethoven: Piano Concertos 4 & 5

Those are some of my favorite pieces and I want to hear modern musicians take on them, I like exciting and brisk interpretations in a excellent sound, please recommend me sum! (Also for I can't stand Levit so please don't recommend him)

Manfred Honeck

Man what a GREAT conductor, everything I've heard so far is exciting and fresh compared to some of the monotony going around, I especially like his Beethoven and Strauss stuff, the 9th is the most aggressive one I heard so far, the 5&7 will be the Kleiber recordings of our time, the Strauss rivals Reiner and Karajan.

I'm looking forward to here more of him, what do y'all think about him?

Recommend me genres that feels creatively alive the way Rock did in the 60s/70s other than Hip-Hop

Although I still enjoy Pink Floyd and Steely Dan and the such I want to listen to something that is at it's peak today that is still evolving and improving, also I want the experience of waiting for your favorite artist to drop a new album or diving deep to find new artists and subgenres, no Hip-Hop though.

Why hasn't there been legendary musicians today?

I know, there are good musicians today, but none that are better or as good as Miles or Coltrane or Monk or Mingus, there are some great ones like Brad Mehldau and Kamasi Washington, yet I don't see myself listening to them more than just curiosity of what's going on today, and that seems weird to me, there at least should be at least someone that rivals the 60s cats.

When, if ever, do we move on from certain albums?

Hello, I'm a classical music fan first, but recently I started really digging other genres, mainly jazz, jazz fusion and rock (prog and fusion adjacent). Like anyone who tries getting into new genres and trying to find albums I search YouTube, reddit some random forums etc, and built a collection of albums that are 99% from 60s to the 80s, I can't complain I love everything I've chosen so far, so it's not a problem of quality.

I guess my question is when do we, if ever, should move on from those classic albums, yeah art doesn't age and all (heck I listen to centuries old music everyday), but how long does it stay in the canon? Will Kind of Blue always be the jazz album? Pink Floyd or King Crimson the prog bands etc, is it that those genres peaked during that era and will always be great? Do you think eventually those albums will just be music pieces and seen as historical artifacts?

I'm not the most knowledgeable about this kind of music and the culture so I humbly seek to understand, I'm nowhere near exhausting the music from that era nor explored what's out there today, so please share your thoughts!

Recommend me some recent musicians

My favorite genre is classical, by A LOT, but for album genres I love rock (prog rock and whatever Steely Dan is) jazz fusion (Takanaka Jeff beck Weather Report etc), but when I look at my library the most recent album is a 90s Sade album, I'm 19 so I thought I should check out what's going on today since all my friends think I'm pretentious.

The genres I can't stand are pop, hip-hop/rap and especially anything "experimental" or avant garde.

Edit: I'd preferably love to hear new sounds, I don't expect anyone today to top Miles Davis in jazz or Pink Floyd in prog rock but I want to hear the best x at what they do.

Jazz fusion albums for headphones

Hello, can y'all recommend me some albums that sound good on headphones? I've found older types of jazz unbearable on headphones because of hard panning, so I thought I might gave fusion a chance.

Recommend a good Brandenburg Concertos record

99% of my library is from the so called "golden age", yet they sucked at baroque (except my boy Glenn Gould) so I would like a good Brandenburg Concertos record that is HIP and in great sound, thanks!

Which living musicians (and records) will be remembered in the future?

The same how musicians like Karajan and Richter and Heiftez are remembered decades after their deaths and their records still seen as the "reference recording" of certain pieces, who are those kinds of musicians today? do we even have ones that will be remembered and are not merely good for our time? are there modern recordings that are the reference of certain pieces? let me know!

IMO, the only one I'm sure will be seen as a great artist in the future is Sokolov, insane technique and musicality, no one else is close (or maybe needs more time to judge like Trifonov and Lim)

Edit: I'm talking specifically about players not composers.

Opinions on Encores/Recital records

Do you listen to those kinds of records? I'm talking about records were the artist doesn't play a long sole piece, but a few short pieces from different composers, what do you think about those kinds of records? Personally I only listened to Horowitz at carnegie hall.

Why do you read classical literature?

As someone who reads 99% classical, I had a chat with a friend of mine who basically thinks it's a waste of time, that modern fiction has "improved" upon what came before and is more sophisticated. What do you think about this notion? what makes reading "dead" literature (as she called it) worthwhile to you centuries after it's written?

Opinions on Glenn Gould

He is my favorite Bach pianist, he played every piece in a unique and interesting way and I just have so much fun listening to Bach this way. I know he wasn't really sticking with how Bach "should" sound which might be controversial here, please share your thoughts!

What makes a musician "great"?

In a recent post I asked why older recordings are still referenced, the overwhelming majority argued that although technique and sound weren't "perfect", the interpretive quality on it's own is evergreen and worth listening to, this might seem obvious to you but I can't yet put my finger on it, what makes musicians from that era so great and legendary? what is it that makes them great? please share you thoughts!

Why are old records still recommended?

To get a few things of the way, I listen to older recordings because they were recommended to me when I started, and I'm not old so I'm not nostalgic.

Recently I've been thinking why are older recordings still recommended as the reference? Intuitively one would assume musicians today would run circles around older ones, technique wise at least it's not debated, sound quality wise also I assume it's objectively better (though I know audiophiles argue analogue sound better).

At first I thought it was just old critics blinded by nostalgia that are recommending them, yet there are critics (and just listeners) who were born years after the death of those musicians that still swear by them.

What do y'all think? is it just nostalgia? or were those old musicians so good to deserve to be listened to 70 years later? or is it a mix of both?

Must hear piano records

I remember when i first heard the 1958 sofia recital by Richter, the way he played pictures left me stunned, petrified in awe of how he played the piano, i want other records like this, not merely a good performance of a piece, but performances that will simply never be repeated, the 1955 Gould goldberg variations is the closest I've gotten to the Richter record.
