Strings?

I've had two high e strings come unwound at the ball end within the last two days, on two different guitars. The strings are about two months old, a set of Skinny Top Beefy Bottom strings from Ernie Ball. I play in D standard/drop C.

What strings do you guys use, how do they hold up? Two different strings coming undone back to back makes me think I should try to broaden my horizons and try other brands. Does anyone else make hybrid sets like these? If so, what do y'all recommend/use?

Which neck would you choose?

Swapped out the original neck on my HB ST20 HSS SBK, but I'm not satisfied. It was from Amazon, so my expectations weren't high at all, just wanted a maple neck and rosewood fretboard, compared to the stock black neck w/ amaranth fretboard. The thing is, I have this spare Ibanez neck from an old XV500, and it is extremely thin and very comfortable, just not the best color for the guitar. What neck would you choose were you in my position?

It's as good as they say!

Grandpa was looking at an ES style guitar, he has almost everything else (sonically speaking). I had sent him a link to the ES-355 Futura last week, since there was a green one, his favorite color is green. Imagine our surprise when we walked into our local store (who specializes in Gibson/Epiphone guitars) and they had this exact one!

It plays very well, the frets feel silky smooth. Tones from the ProBuckers are warm and clear, or bright and sharp when you coil split. He wasn't a fan of the phase switch, but I think he'll come around as he grows into the guitar a bit more. Sadly the shop didn't have the Explorer, V or RD Custom, otherwise we both would have gone home with new guitars.

This is his first guitar with locking tuners as well, he was floored to learn about how they work and how easy they make string changes.

Used water and a bug scrubber on the front (for the bugs, obviously) and then SudsLab Quick Car Detailer on everything else. Wipe the windows with a microfiber cloth afterwards to buff and she's ready to roll. Love how the paint looks in the sun once it's clean.

Another step in the modification journey of this budget guitar. I reached out to Harley Benton awhile back and asked what kind of pickups the ST20 HSS SBK has (since the website doesn't say) and was told they're ceramic, so I threw in a spare EMG HZ ceramic humbucker I had laying around. Ordered a $12 pickguard from Musiclily and added some 500k pots and the guitar sounds better than ever. So far it has:

  • Maple neck w/ rosewood fingerboard
  • Guyker tuners
  • Guyker 500k pots
  • EMG HZ ceramic neck pickup
  • Rewired the control knobs to have the neck + middle on tone control 1 and the bridge on tone control 2

I'm quite happy with how the bridge pickup sounds, I don't think I'll be changing it. the only thing I foresee myself changing is the trem block for better tuning stability, since it has a tendency to go out of tune when using the trem system. Other than that, I'm calling this project done! I can post a sound clip/video if anyone is interested in hearing it.

Rats was the first song I learned from Ghost, I absolutely love when the slow solo starts and the drums go into half time, and then the full solo kicks in. Such a sweet song, best one on Meliora IMO. Thanks for listening! Tips/feedback/criticism is always welcome.
