Sorcerer/Warlock multiclass. [Question]

I'm looking for advice on a multiclass. I like the idea of a natural magic user making a deal for more power to bolster his own. Assuming a 1-20 campaign what is the best way to build this out? How many levels of each? Which subclasses synergize best? Feat recommendations? (other than obvious picks like warcaster) I know I would most likely start sorcerer at level 1. After that what do I do?

Spears aren't good enough

I feel like right now in 2024 people are discouraged from using spears except as a flavor pick. Spears are historically one of the best weapons in melee but in dnd they are all out preformed by some other weapon at every niche they can fill. Do other people see this as a problem? If I could fix spears in dnd I would bump up their die from a D6 (D8 Versatile) to a D8 (D10 Versatile) and switch their weapon mastery from sap to graze. Do others have other suggestions? Are they fine as is? I'm open to discussing it.

I made a list of all subclasses from 2014 5e yet to be republished in 2024 5.5e

I might have missed some but I think this list is all of the officially published subclasses. I didn't include ones that I know are coming in upcoming books.

Barbarian

  • Ancestral Guardian
  • Battle Rager
  • Beast
  • Giant
  • Storm Herald
  • Totem warrior
  • Wild magic

Bard

  • Creation
  • Eloquence
  • Spirits
  • Swords
  • Whispers

Cleric

  • Death
  • Forge
  • Nature
  • Order
  • Peace
  • Tempest
  • Twilight

Druid

  • Dreams
  • Shepard
  • Spores
  • Wildfire

Fighter

  • Cavalier
  • Echo Knight
  • Rune Knight
  • Samurai

Monk

  • Ascendant Dragon
  • Astral Self
  • Drunken Master
  • Kensai
  • Long Death
  • Shadow Soul

Paladin

  • Conquest
  • Crown
  • Redemption
  • Watchers
  • Oath Breaker

Ranger

  • Drake Warden
  • Horizon Walker
  • Monster Slayer
  • Swarm Keeper

Rogue

  • Inquisitive
  • Mastermind
  • Scout
  • Swashbuckler

Sorcerer

  • Divine soul

  • Shadow
  • Storm

Warlock

  • Fathomless
  • Genie
  • Undying
  • Undead

Wizard

  • Chronogy
  • Gravaturgy
  • Scribes
  • War Magic

Which subclasses listed would you want to see reprinted in a new book? Which subclasses deserve to be forgotten by time? I know that technically 5e is backwards compatible but as eventually its going to be too confusing for new players to know what they can use and what they can't use from old books. Ideally, most of the spells and subclasses that people actually like will get reprinted and we can all just leave our 5e books on the shelf as collectors items and fond memories of the past.

Eldritch Knight Multiclassing

If I were to play an eldrich knight fighter as my main class but wanted to take wizard levels for more spells and higher level slots, what is the best level to transition to wizard? I would want to be at least a level 8 fighter so that I can benefit from at least on extra asi. But fighters get good stuff at +9 I'd be missing out on. Is it worth it to stick fighter past 8 to get things like indomitable and second extra attack or do I just go full wizard after level 8? Stats at level 8 look like this str 19 dex 10 con 14 int 16 wis 10 cha 8.

This is hypothetical so I don't know what the teammates would be bringing to the table. Just assume its a fairly balanced party with or without my proposed character.

I think one of the other players is cheating.

We had a player join our table not too long ago. He makes jokes a lot when the dm asks another player about their character sheet. Always saying really high numbers. Like if the dm asks the paladin (who still doesn't know the game that well) what the modifier for his paladin aura is, this player will quickly shout out "its at least 4 or 5". When we check its actually a 2. He jokes like this ALL the time like anytime he gets an opportunity he'll "joke" that the numbers should be giving us an advantage or that our loot should be worth more than it is. Not a big deal but its something I noticed. After a few sessions I noticed his attacks were doing a lot of damage. (Like a little over what I think should even be possible.) I asked him how he was getting such consistently high numbers, thinking he might have some feats or something I wasn't considering that was boosting his damage. But when I asked he just vaguely said "my character is a fighter they are really strong" with no further elaboration on how he was consistently doing in the high 20's for damage on single swings. I think he might be rolling dice and making up a number. I can't prove it, but I really don't like the idea of playing with someone that's fudging rolls. What should I do?

I'm going to start this post by saying there is a possibility we will never see twilight cleric again. 5.5e seems to want to bring new subclasses more than just republishing every single old one and Twilight Cleric feels like a subclass they might just want quietly forgotten. Buy if they ever did republish it i think we can all agree it would need to be toned down significantly.

Here's what I would do:

  1. Limit the dark vision of eyes of the night to 60ft. It adds 60ft if you already have dark vision. When you share the dark vision with an ally they only get it for 10 minutes. As a small buff though I would give it the ability to see through magical darkness as well.

  2. Remove vigilant blessing entirely. Hardly fits with the themeing just a powerful ribbon feature for no reason. The subclass doesn't need it.

  3. Reduce the range of Twilight Sanctuary to a 10 ft. emanation. It will extend to 30ft. at level 17 like a paladin aura.

  4. Change the wording of Twilight Sanctuary so that each turn you and 1 creature of your choice inside the Sanctuary heal 1D4+half cleric level (round down) at the end of your turn. Gets rid of the temp hp which is too common in 5.5e also drastically reduces the amount of hp you can give in a round. At level 20 its averaging with you healing 25 hp per turn split between two characters. That's still pretty good.

  5. Remove the fly speed from the level 6 feature. Change it to while in dim light or darkness +10 ft of movement speed and dash as a bonus action wisdom mod times per long rest.

Everything else i would leave the same. Is this still too strong? Is it now too weak? Does this seem balanced? Would you want to see twilight cleric come back in 5.5e at all? I'm curious to hear from other people.

If I want to make a Strength based unarmed character are my best options using only official 5.5 content? I'm open to any class or subclass. I'll figure out the flavor later. I just want to play a big strong dude that handles enemies effectively with his fists but doesn't hold weapons. Ideally the character has serviceable ac and survivability in close quarters combat and deals damage that is respectable even if its a little less than what is possible with a weapon.
