Astralgrass - Live Jam with a Few Samplers/Grooveboxes/Synthesizers While Chopping Up Old Blues and Bluegrass

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Na5CQYG_1RQ

My wife and I are eccentric music geeks. Primarily, we are into just about everything that was born out of late 1970s experimentalism with electronic music and punk.. so that means we love stuff like Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, The Cure, The Dead Kennedys, Art of Noise, Coil, Psychic TV, Bauhaus, Eno, Roxy Music, Ramones, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, De La Soul, Blondie, The Damned, Last Poets, The Misfits, Bruce Haack, 13th Floor Elevators, Captain Beefhart, Black Sabbath, Sleep, Hawkwind, Lords of the New Church, Tom Waits, Devo, etc...

But at some point, we were bitten by the IDM/glitch and breakcore bug. We often find ourselves enjoying music from Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, BongRa, Autechre as these acts took the exploration of electronic music and plunderphonics to entire new levels.

And so, we have sought to combine our influences.. taking the sensibilities of psychedelic experimentalism from the 1960s and 1970s, with the futurist experimentalism of IDM and glitch type music.

For this track, we sampled some very old blues and bluegrass elements, chopped them up and took the appropriate phrases and combined them with electronic percussion, breaks, and synthesizers.. with the hope of creating something new, from something very old.

Hopefully it hits for you the way it hits for us.

Cheers from Delco PA

On the CGI image, does that actually say what I think it says?

I'm not sure why this add cropped up in my Reddit feed. This was a game advertisement on the Steam platform.

Also, what the fuck is a 'boomer shooter'?!?

I guess I know...

All Elektron IDM/Braindance Jam Session... A Tonverk, a Syntakt, and a Digitakt II walk into a pub...

We did a thing... this time.. with only Elektron boxes as the instruments. I think I created a Frankenstein when I told my better half about the Tonverk. She initially wanted it for the Granular engine. Now she can chop beats with the best of them.🤣 And she can still create all the different ethereal pads and heavy warbling drones that first got her into all of this.

But, she's still not quite as good at the more acidic stuff... so I still have a purpose!!😂

To make this track, she initially had been playing around with some pizzicato string samples. Eventually, I heard something and said, let me add some braindance/acid elements. Next thing I knew, we were chopping amens.

For future mastering purposes (in the event that we ever actually try to put out an album), we routed the electronic drums from the Tonverk to Outputs C and D, and sent them to the Cre8Audio Assembler, along with the Digitakt which was only doing chopped breaks. By routing all percussion sounds are together, into the Cre8Audio Assembler, it was easier to manage their levels, even though they came from two different boxes.

From the Cre8Audio Assembler, everything went into tracks 3-&-4 of the M-Audio 192|14 audio interface, which was hanging out off-camera.

The other pizzicato plucks and synths from the Tonverk were routed out outputs A and B, to tracks 1-&-2 of the M-Audio... while the Acidic-braindance and other synth elements from the Syntakt were routed to tracks 5-&-6 of the M-Audio 192|14 interface.

Using Novation Launch-Control XL-3 to Control Akai MPC Key37 is a Game-changer for Us

So... we tried to save ourselves $250.00... I had an old Evolution U-Control UC-33 USB/Midi controller from another lifetime. We plugged it into the Akai MPC Key37 and it seemed like it might work. We were able to route one volume control and then it completely fritzed out.. making crazy frozen rhythms of a segment of a sequence.

So, we ran down to Guitar Center, and $250.00 later, well... the Novation Launch-Control XL-3 simply works!! It was immediate. Using the 'midi-learn' option in the MPC Key37 was as easy as one could hope!!

My wife used to jump around one the 'Mix' screen, to an 'Effect', or to a filter-setting in 'Keygroups', back to an 'Effect' or to a volume control in the 'Mix' page, and back again.

Now, she can have her controls all mapped out on the Launch-Control XL-3 with a very quick learning curve and minimal frustration or technical issues.

Here's the first track we've made where we actually use the Novation Launch-Control XL-3 to control her Akai MPC Key37.

This is a live, over-the-table video of us making the music you'll hear. I guess the style is IDM.. with some plunderphonics thrown in courtesy of the Polyend Play. I'm on the Elektron Digitakt II adding chopped up and sometimes mangled percussion. She is working the Launch-Control XL-3, controlling various aspects of the MPC Key37, now with zero menu-diving. Things are pretty moderate until about 4:30 or so, when things get more 'breakcore-esque'.

Upon reflection, I think we tried to save ourselves $250.00... wasted hours fighting with old technology. And now, looking back.. in all honesty... I think this was $250.00 that was well spent!!

New Track Up... Created With Elektron Tonverk and Roland SH-4d

It's kind of a darker piece.. mixing some elements of atmosphere that is not too unlike Coil, with dubstep, IDM, and perhaps trip-hop elements.

The Tonverk provided all samples and also was the midi-brain for the SH-4d.

For those keeping score, this is an updated version of a track I originally posted about two years ago, where I used a Korg Drumlogue, Polyend Play, and the same Roland SH-4d... but I always wanted to see the song expanded to become what it is today.. and so, my wife delivered.

Assign LFOs to Delay Time?

I love Elektron for their parameter locking and freely assignable LFOs.

In my Digitakt II, I can only parameter lock the amount of signal being sent to Delay, Reverb, etc.

Unfortunately, after sending the signal to the Delay, there seems to be no way to parameter-lock or assign an LFO to manipulate the delay-time-intervals.

I like a lot of islandy dub.. King Tubby.. Lee Scratch Perry.. Bill Laswell... so, those are the effects I'm trying to achieve.

Of course I can hold 'Func' and twist the knob between delay-time-intervals, but if I'm working other aspects of a track, it might be nice to be able to p-lock or assign an LFO to these parameters.

Does anyone know of a work-around for this?!

If not, does anyone know of any midi-capable multi-effects processors that allows you to manipulate delay time by using LFOs?

Thanks for any insights that can be provided!!

New Track... Astralgrass

The track was built around some blues and bluegrass samples from almost 100 years ago.

These samples then became the inspiration for recontextualizing, to create new melodies, adjacent to the very old, blues/folk/country/circle-of-fifths motif.

No artificial intelligence technology was used to generate anything in this video. Everything was chopped, repitched, bent, manipulated, played, and sequenced by the two awkward people you see working the boxes you see in the video.

Everything was recorded live, in one-take, so WYSIWYG... clutter, blemishes and all.

My wife and I have been doing a project were calling 'Avid Field Enthusiasts'. It's a style of IDM that is a bit more introspective and atmospheric.

We do many styles of experimental electronic music, from aggressive jungle and breakcore, to nostalgic sounding electronic lullabies.

But for 'Avid Field Enthusiasts', we are focusing more on introspective, thought provoking melodies and tonalities, finely diced percussion, and maybe a little bit of nostalgia thrown in for good measure.

For this piece, we attempted to mix the sound of old classical/chamber music, with some minor plunderphonics, and some breaks.

Cheers to you from Delco PA!!
