Anyone else's nparent think they know better than doctors?
My nmom is giving me such a headache. I'm going through a medical issue right now (digestive related), I am VERY well informed on this issue as I spent 2 years with doctors and specialists dealing with it and helping me through it. My nmom won't stop giving me all her hot takes and how the doctors are wrong and that she knows better. It's gotten to the point where I don't even try to inform her or correct her, I just say "oh, ok".
Like this morning for example, I mentioned that at night your digestive system slows down. She then went on and on about how that's not true because "if your digestive system slows down at night, why do we still pee in the morning? Doctors are not educated." I just sighed and said "yeah".
Ugh.
Vent about doctors not listening to me (1 year post OP)
Hi everyone.
I just want to vent over the doctors in my area.
I had my gallbladder removed a year ago. Surgery went well and I am living a normal life, and can eat whatever I want. The only issue is that I have very urgent diarrhoea after my very first meal of the day. After that bowel movement I am perfectly fine for the rest of the day. After reading up about it it seems like it could be BAD (bile acid diarrhoea).
I went to a GP I've never been before because I recently moved to a new town. I asked him if we could please try a trial of bile binder before we do any more costly diagnostic procedures. He kept asking me if I get nauseous, he probably asked me like 5 times, each time I said no. What does he prescribe me? F*CK*NG ANTI-NAUSEA MEDICATION.
Today I went to another GP. She also went on and on about nausea but eventually understood I have no nausea. Then she said I needed to go to a specialist and have a bunch of test done, including a scope, to find out what's going on. I told her that while I understand further testing might be needed, I would just really like to try the simpler, cheaper option of bile binders BEFORE I fork out more money. She absolutely refused. She was quite rude throughout the appointment.
I then tried a tele-health consult. She was just as rude as the previous one. She said it makes no sense that I have no nausea and no other symptoms. She then told me to go back to the surgeon that performed the surgery so that he can do some checks and tests, he is 1300KM (807 miles) AWAY FROM WHERE I AM NOW.
I ended up sending an e-mail to my doctor where I am originally from and hoping she would be able to assist me with a trial of bile binders.
I was not rude during any of those consults, and I in no way tried to act like I knew better than the GP. All I asked was for a 1 month trial of a bile binder. I really do not want to go to a specialist, fork out a ton of money and get told I just needed a bile binder.
Has anyone else gone through this? Did GPs also refuse to prescribe you bile binders?
[Vent] 40kgs down, mom still sees me as big as an elephant
I recently moved back in with my parents (only temporarily) for reasons I don't really want to get into. My mom has no filter and sometimes just says things that she thinks means well, but comes across as really hurtful.
I lived in a different part of the country for a few years, I haven't seen my parents during that time but we did communicate often. Before I moved away a few years ago I was much bigger than I am now, so I thought my mom would notice I've lost a bit of weight. The moment I stepped into the house she started panicking that I would not fit into the shower... It's ye olde standard shower, one where 2 people could fit into. Before I moved all those years back and lost the weight I used that shower, so for some reason now I seem much much bigger to my mom.
Yesterday when my mom went to town I asked if I could tag along. And to preface, I've ridden in her car before with her. When she pulled out of the driveway she made it very clear she was trying to manoeuvre the car in a certain way which seemed odd. I asked her if there was something wrong, she said "I am just trying the prevent the car from scraping on the pavement due to all the extra weight in the car" (my mom's car is very low, if 4+ people sit in it the car's front bumper sometimes scrapes on the pavement when you back out of the driveway, so you need to reverse at an angle to prevent that).
Another odd thing she does is act surprised when I eat very little. When she cooks she LOADS my plate to the brim and acts surprised when I eat only a third of the food, when I cook I give myself my usual portion and she would question me why I have such a small portion because "bigger bodies need more fuel".
She also doesn't say these things infront of my dad, it's only when it's just me and her. My dad has been chill and hasn't said anything about my weight.
I just feel so shitty about myself. I've been here about 2 weeks and nearly every day she's made a comment about my body. I'm starting to think that I perceive myself smaller than what I am, that I've been delusional the past few years.
I'll probably talk to her about this at some stage, I just don't have the energy for that kind of conversation and its (possible) implications at the moment due to everything else going on in my life.
I love my parents dearly, but I can't stand living with them.
I (35F) just came out of an 8 year relationship. We lived together, so I had to move out. Due to financial issues, I had to move back in with my parents.
My parents love me and would move heaven and earth to help me whenever I need it, and I am eternally grateful for them, but I cannot stand living with them. My dad is okay, but my mom is the biggest issue.
My mom has some undiagnosed mental health issues. She has absolutely no filter and severe anxiety. The first day I moved back in she acted as though I was too fat to fit into the shower. I am overweight. My BMI is on the lower end of overweight and I have already lost 30kg, but I am nowhere near as massive as she seems to perceive me. She kept stressing that the shower was too small and that I would not be able to shower comfortably. When I showed her the shower was completely fine and that several people could fit in there, she just said "oh" and walked away.
She also says things like I must never leave the house alone, that she will drive me everywhere and that I am not even allowed to move into a place next door to them one day. She opens my bedroom door without knocking and gets upset if I lock it. She frets over me constantly and it is driving me insane.
My dad on the other hand is pretty chill, he has some mental health issues as well but he seems to be managing it much better. I think the issues he is having is due to my mom being a ball of nerves.
Both of my parents are also heavy smokers. I have had a constant headache since the day I moved in and my chest hurts. The walls are stained yellow and the whole house smells like smoke. I scrubbed my bathroom and shower from top to bottom, but it is no use because the smoke has seeped into the walls and paint. Whenever I shower, the steam brings the smell out even more, and the condensation dripping down the walls and ceiling is brown.
I want to set boundaries. I want to tell my mom to relax. But this is their house, and they are helping me through one of the hardest times of my life and I don't want to upset them or offend them. I will not be able to move out for another 2 years due to financial reasons, and I honestly do not know how I am going to survive that long when I already feel this overwhelmed after only 1 week.
Hi r/capetown, after 8 amazing years in the city, I moved to another province this week. I spent my last night in Cape Town at an Airbnb and wanted to share a few photos.
Hi everyone.
I’ll be travelling alone in the coming weeks, and I’m honestly quite terrified about going to the airport and flying by myself. I don’t have any issue with flying, I know it’s very safe, it’s more the idea of doing everything alone that’s making me anxious. In the past I’ve always had someone with me, so this will be the first time I’ll be navigating an airport on my own and flying without a friend/partner.
I’m a 35 year old grown ass woman and I feel a bit silly being this anxious over it. I’ve been through much worse in my life, but for some reason this is really making my anxiety spike.
I’d really appreciate any advice on how to feel more prepared for doing this on my own.
Thanks in advance <3
Hi everyone,
I am extremely desperate atm and would really appreciate ya'lls input on this.
I’m in the middle of moving cities within the next week, and I’m dealing with multiple other major issues at once. My teeth and TMJ decided that now is the perfect time to cause problems. I've also been clenching my teeth much more often now due to the stress, especially when I'm sleeping.
I will be needing braces and implants to address my dental issues, but that isn’t possible right now due to the move. I will be seeing an ortho in the new city once I've settled.
At the moment, I really just need something temporary, ideally a night guard, to help keep things stable and protected for the next couple of weeks until I’m settled. Unfortunately, my dentist can’t make one for me on such short notice, and he’s fully booked, so I haven’t been able to ask him for advice.
I’m considering trying a boil-and-bite night guard as a short term solution, but I’m worried about whether that would be safe with my current issues. One of my biggest concerns is that my bite feels misaligned, and eating has become uncomfortable.
Has anyone been in a similar situation or have experience using boil-and-bite guards with TMJ and bite problems? I’m just trying to get through the next two weeks without making anything worse.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
