How would you blason these coins, minted with a cross? (1: inner disc removed, minting in front of the field, 2: minting removed, field visible)

The mystery of the extended arms of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough

As John Churchill rose through the ranks of society, he steadily expanded his coat of arms to include further fields. Whilst the first four are already rather far-fetched, though they can be explained, fields 5 to 9, which were added from 1711 onwards, remain unexplained and inexplicable. Contrary to what is sometimes claimed, these do not represent his German estates of Mindelheim or Nellenburg.

  • 1 Churchill (Winston Churchill, 1661–1688)
  • 2 Wilduirde/Wildiarde/Wildyard(e)/Widworthy: alleged distant ancestor from Devon and the original manor of the familiy
  • 3 Tylle: distant ancestor from Devon
  • 4 Winston: from his grandmother Sarah Winston
  • the unknown quarters:
  • 5 maybe the modified arms of Flanders as a reference to his battles there?
  • 6 maybe the recurring arms of his alleged ancestor Otho de Léon from which his original arms (and the first quarter) originate?
  • 7 not related to the „Honor and Manor of Woodstock“, which was added after his death. Perhaps a veiled reference to the victories over France?
  • 8+9 both already look like a battle formation

Supporters: wyvern gules the wings expanded: from the arms of Drake family of Ashe (his mother Elizabeth Drake)

Can anyone identify or explain the unknown quarterings?
