What message do you think all new djs should be given before they start

I run a vinyl dj night and quite like helping out new DJs out by giving them a guest slot. Most of the time it works out well, people turn up, play the genres we agreed, and go home with a smile on their face. Sometimes, new DJs can be really annoying and I think “are you like that because you’re new to this, or are you just a dick”. So messages I’d like to give new DJs is:

  1. don’t agree to things you can’t do (e.g. don’t say you’ll play a reggae night if you only have two ska records)
  2. it’s not your night/vision, promoters will have an agreement with the venue as to what type of night it is, so stick to playing what you’ve agreed to
  3. try to be flexible with what you collect, if it get quiet people don’t want to hear fast tempo bangers
  4. ask if it’s ok before you put your banner up with your dj name all over it at someone else’s night
  5. Help promote the night, a big part of a DJs job is to bring and keep people in a venue. If the promoter gives you promo materials that you don’t like, (unless it’s got S.S symbols all over it) don’t be a baby still post them on your social media anyways (I’m sure we’ve all been sent some dodgy clip art poster at some point)

What other unwritten rules do you think new DJs should know?

Near perfect albums that are ruined by one or two songs

I love Yerself is Steam by Mercury Rev, but whenever Blue and Black come on I’m like “WTF is this shit.” and instantly skip, otherwise it would easily be a contender for my top 10 albums

Albums you can’t fault but when you show the to others they’re like “it’s ok, nothing special”

When I was growing up local band Unhome put out an album “a short history of houses”. I started going to gigs a little after they had split up, but for scene elders they were still very much apart of everyone’s collective memory. Everyone I knew considered that album to be the perfect album. There was a lot of mythology about how great they were live, and a lot of local bands were more than influence by them.

When I first heard the album, 25 years ago, I can remember having that “this is the sound that is missing from my life feeling”. Even to this day I listen to it and I think “this is flawless”. However, whenever, I’ve shown people whose taste I respect the album, it’s always met with a response a bit like “you like this? Seriously?” And I can’t figure out what they’re not hearing.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences with albums you love? What are they? What’s your story with them?

DIY fix suggestions

First time taking my board out the house today, and I’ve notice it bears off to one side quite a bit (I didn’t notice in the house cos I can’t skate that far in the bedroom). How do I fix this or is it normal?

Edit: Loosening the trucks seems to have help (it’s easier to manage the pull when on the board at least) new bushers might be the answer. Thanks everyone!

Beck covers Beck

Throughout his career, Beck has sometimes dipped into his lo-fi beginnings and made high fidelity re-recordings of the tunes. Ones that spring to mind:

It’s all in your mind
Feather in your Cap
(Arguably) MTV Make me Wanna Smoke Crack

Are there any tracks you’d like to hear re-recorded?

I’d like to hear a nicely recorded version of going nowhere fast.

How to deal with arseholes in team meeting, without being a wallflower

For context, I work in a remote team, so none of us sit in an office together. There this one jobsworth guy who really loves putting other people down to make himself look better and it goes unnoticed by the managers in our team meetings. The kind who of guy who says something that on paper looks fine, but his tone says “I’m so much better than you”. For example, if you get given an important project will say “are you sure they will be able to manage that by yourself?”(translation: you’re not good enough to manage this responsibility) Or if you ask a question will say “have you tried reading the policies”(translation: have you tried doing your job or are you too stupid). Or if you come up with a great new idea he’ll say “I’ve already been doing that for months” (translation: that’s a great idea, I wish I had thought of it first). Sometimes he’s set his sights on me. I’m not the most quick witted person so the only retaliation I can think of “fuck off you cunt” which I don’t think would go down well at work, so I usually sit there in silence whilst he makes me look like a dick.

TLDR: How do you tell people to “fuck off” like a pro?

Annoying post alert 🚨

I almost can’t bring myself to write this, but it’s something I’ve been chewing on for a while so I thought I’d share my thoughts.

I recently came across a post in the r/punk sub discussing the film ‘the year punk broke’, a lot of people in the comments were discussing whether grunge was ‘punk’ or ‘post punk’, and my immediate thought was “here we go again…people not understanding what the ‘post’ in ‘post punk’ means”.

I also came across a YT Short making the same mistake, discussing how it was weird that Television are a post punk band when they released a Marquee moon before punk was really a thing.

My first thoughts on the YT short is that in the seventies and eighties, most people didn’t set out to be a post punk band, they were usually just trying to be a punk band (or in the case of Television, I think they were just trying to be a band).

Also, my understanding of the definition of post-punk is that “post” is the abridged from “post-modern”, and that it doesn’t literally translate to “came after punk”. I’m not sure where I got this from though. Whilst I am friends with a small handful of heavyweights from the OG UK post-punk bands, I’m not an authority on the subject.

TLDR: For me post punk makes more sense when you think of it as “post-modern punk” instead of “came after punk”

‘Satan Gave me a Taco’ skip

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but what’s the deal with the skip in Satan gave me a taco? Happens right between “smoked a lot of heroin” and “passed out in manure” (~2:53)

I first notice this when I was a teenager (about 20+ years ago) and I thought i was being punished for not looking after my CDs properly. Since then I’ve streamed it and noticed the jump happens in exactly the same place in YouTube uploads, streaming platforms…etc.

Anyone else notice the skip on there copies? Interestingly, my friend growing up had a copy that didn’t skip.

Songs you’d love to play that would kill the dance floor (as in everyone would walk off, not go “this dj is killing it!”)?

As the title says. I’ve grown up listening to a lot of very noisy music, and I think one of my blindspots as a dj can be that I forgot people don’t have the same tolerance for horrible sounds that I have. I’m getting better though.

I’m also a massive beck fan and would love to play tunes like ‘high five (rock the Catskills)’ as the rhythm sections are great?, but I know everyone would just fuck off.

What would you love to play that would end a night?

Heavy Beck

One of Beck’s sounds I’ve often overlooked, is when he fully rocked out on the first couple of records (which is weird because I’ve always generally loved heavy music).

Upon discovering Megaboob (linked above) recently I was wondering if there’s any more aside from the stuff that’s on Stereopathetic/Mellow Gold and the singles that came out around that time. Like, did he ever put out any cassettes/are there any bootlegged radio performances of the heavy stuff?

Cheers

‘Big Man’

I’m (M40) and Im big and tall. Quite often when I meet a stranger they will call me ‘Big Man’ thinking it’s endearing. When I hear this I can hear their thought process which is probably “look at this fat bastard, I can’t call him a fat bastard, what else can I say”. Why say anything? I don’t walk around going “hey short guy”, or “hey skinny woman”…etc. Anyone else get this and also get pissed off?

Tips for selling vintage sax (uk)

Hi,

Apologies if you already receive a lot of posts like this (but I’ll post anyways). I live in London. I have a vintage (approx 100+ years old). Martin 74022 tenor sax that I’m looking to sell. It’s in pretty good condition. I had it serviced about 2 years before I stopped playing, I can’t identify any leaks and the pads aren’t sticking.

There is some slight bruising on the bell, where holes have been repaired (my dad’s at the time girlfriend found the sax in an abandoned house and gave it as a gift to me. She said it looked like people had tried to damaging with a hammer when she found it. It’s amazing what a good service can do!)

The only thing that is a problem with it is that the mouth piece is stuck to the neck (I have no idea why I didn’t take it off last time I played), so the neck will need recorcking.

It has a modern flight case which is heavy duty and in good condition. The original flight case had completed fallen apart and was no longer fit for purpose, so it got scrapped.

It seems like a pretty special beast to, me and I would like to go to a good home where someone knows what they’ve got and can play a vintage sax (and I don’t want to get ripped off either). Where’s the best place to sell this sax? EBay? Reverb?

TLDR I’ve got a banging vintage sax I want to sell where can I get the most money for it?

New to skateboarding, have o missed the boat?

Hi, there’s probably a shit ton of posts like this so apologies, but I’m going to ask anyways…

I’m 40 and probably having a midlife crisis, but I’ve got a strong craving to learn how to skate. Mainly just for getting around and doing a bit more exercise. Am I too old now? Anyone else start when they’re 40? Should I give up on my dream? Any tips for a mature beginner?

As it says. Is there a fix? I’m worried I won’t get a sleep animal next month.

Obvious lines of enquiry:

Fitbit inspire 2

yes,I have worn it whilst sleeping;

yes it is charged;

yes it is recording other things like steps and workouts

Yes Bluetooth is on

No I have tried reinstalling the app
