Good to know I'm not alone

Today is the first time I'm learning that there's a name for an encounter I had as a kid.

When I was little I lived in a two story house with my dad and grandparents. Common rooms were downstairs, kids rooms were upstairs. I was 10 ten years old and folding laundry with my Grandpa and my big sisters. We were joking and laughing. Having a good day.

That's something I need to be clear about:

I wasn't an anxious child approaching a scary part of the house. I was happy, and going somewhere comfortable and familiar.

I was bringing my stack of laundry up to my dresser. I had taken maybe two steps when I glanced at the top of the stairs and saw it.

It looked exactly like a shadow without a body, and it was sprinting past the top of the stairs. I saw it for a second and immediately knew, and I mean KNEW as absolute fact, three things:

  1. It was on its way somewhere else.
  2. If it had time to stay, it would have hurt me.
  3. It saw me.

I screamed and dropped my laundry before running back into my Grandpa's arms.

I've gotten different responses from different people I've told throughout the years. My sisters made fun of me, of course. A couple of childhood friends pretended they saw something similar, although they later admitted to making it up. As an adult, a friend of mine that practiced Voodoo tried to convince me that it had been a good spirit.

That friend was wrong.

It's not the only paranormal encounter I've had. It's not even the one that makes for the best story (remind me to tell y'all about the thing that tried to attack me in my bed someday). But nothing I've experienced has shaken my certainty about what I immediately knew as an absolute fact the second I saw it:

  1. It was on its way somewhere else.
  2. If it had time to stay, it would have hurt me.
  3. It saw me.
