Getting affiliate link / commission ads for smartphones on WVFRM

I have YouTube premium. Obviously they can run ads, but ads for phones or things they directly talk about really rubs me the wrong way. Am I misunderstanding something?

Finally leaving for lichess, not giving my money to chess.com

It took years of convincing but I’m finally transitioning from chess.com + game review, to lichess + chess books / focusing on actually getting better.

Game review is so confusing and it doesn’t actually make me better.

The stupid points from “developed pieces!” Were the final straw.

And finally the fact that business people are making money off the fact that they got the chess.com domain just gives me the ick. Feels like we’re always just one step away from some new diabolical money grab.

Anyone else dislike “explain in tech terms?“ (WVFRM)

The “explain the NBA in tech terms” or the “explain xyz in tech terms” segments during episodes, I find them incredibly boring because they’re talking about something fundamentally non tech.

Anyone else know what I mean?

No bad vibes just a critique - love the podcast.

Thoughts on an Amy take

Spoiler on water taxi.

I don’t know why Amy (in the show and the layover) keeps insisting that the water taxi was some amazing magic gift to Badam and that they were super lucky. The fact is two fold:

1.) it was expected to be running when they made the challenges. It actually would have been terrible luck if it wasn’t.
2.) there is no way Sam and Amy would have been so persistent as to bother the tourist people and find that random app.

I just think this was an example of Badam’s tenacity. Not to mention them successfully doing the challenge on first go.

More justice on a challenge

Spoiler episode 5:

I know this has been posted but hearing the layover again on the Minnesota challenge, it is baffling to me that they think Amy was a bad performance and mocking her. I think all viewers recognize that looking at a lake and guessing area is a CRAZY hard thing. I would have no clue.

The only way Sam could ever get that lake is because it was tiny and referencable. That’s it.

The international women’s day jokes were a little condescending IMO.

How would you rank LeBron seasons in terms of “peak” basketball player?

Thought this would be a fun exercise. I might put 2018 above 2013 because that Game 1 against the warriors was something of legend, but his stats in 2013 are just ridiculous and his defense was unreal.

2012–13 (Heat)
2017-18 (Cavs)
2011–12 (Heat)
2015–16 (Cavaliers)
2008–09 (Cavaliers)
2009–10 (Cavaliers)
2013–14 (Heat)
2007–08 (Cavaliers)
2019–20 (Lakers)

I don’t want no interrupting from Nick… but like, a little less?

I don’t want the show to be turn-based like it had to be during COVID, so I don’t mind some interrupting.
But Nick is brutal sometimes when he just starts stuttering in agreement until Brou stops and then he takes back over.

FSF got snubbed at the Emmy’s - cheer our boys up, what’s a reason you think they should have won?

Also I hope they don’t change what they’re doing. Emmy’s are just a random award, the show is absolutely top tier.

If the boys could avoid an offseason, would they?

I know that the team at Jet Lag works super hard so having breaks in between makes total sense.

I was just wondering if now that the show has gotten bigger if they would ideally want no breaks in between seasons, or if they’d always want to have these breaks to avoid audience fatigue / allow for excitement to build. Curious what folks think.

Why do attendants ask if someone is on board?

“Is Bob Johnson on the plane? Please ring your call bell.”

This always scares me … how do they not know who has scanned to get on to a plane?
