Pacifica by Segue might be a summery dub techno album…

And, in my experience, there aren’t many!

It has light touch (snow mentioning track titles not withstanding!) and sounds fabulous on a sunny afternoon in the garden.

Happy to hear your recs on summery dub techno!

On Sunset is a beautiful listen on a sunny summer afternoon.

I just love this album. Didn’t click completely at first but it’s really grown on me over time. I don’t care what anyone says, Weller has been on an incredible run since (and including) As Is Now. Genuinely think he remains massively underrated by the general music loving public for just how relentlessly good he is. Maybe he’s a bit taken for granted?

July Album of the Month in Uncut

Based on the three preview tracks it’s a decent comparison to make.

This band completely new to me.

A fantastic read. Highly recommended.

Almost done with this and have enjoyed it immensely. She is often best remembered as a wife of Ernest Hemingway but this seriously underplays the brilliant, fearless investigative correspondent and reporter that she was. A unique and completely compelling voice in 20th century war literature. This is, I believe, a collection of her columns/dispatches for various periodicals. She’s well worth reading and reading about. A fascinating and unique figure. Lived quite a life.

One of the best anti-war films ever made.

An extraordinary satire of the British Empire with some real grit and - for its time - incredibly realistic battle scenes: all chaos, pointlessness, crass excuses for leadership… This was probably more bold and shocking in its day than Saving Private Ryan was in its. Add in the use of animations which pull no punches on how the public is propagandized and how the “just war” lie is spread and it’s a fearless, blackly comic masterpiece.

I’m preaching to the choir here but wanted to flag it up to anyone who’s never seen it.

Doing some purging of old media. I was a lot cooler than I realized in 1988.

And my love of Kate kept her in fine, fine company.

Thought this was fantastic. Can’t recommend enough. It’s dense but very, very readable.

I’ve read a lot of WWI and II books. Probably a couple hundred. This definitely goes in my top 5 for gripping story telling while also never letting up on detail and nuance. Atkinson can write a bit. He knows how to bring large and small moments to poignant life. This was my first book in the trilogy so now I’m going to read it backwards and read The Day of Battle next. My grandfather fought in Africa and Italy and was mentioned in dispatches during the invasion of Salerno.

Note: All 3 are free to read on Kindle Unlimited.

These have been a bust so far.

First off, pretty useless that their dosage guide has to be completely translated to account for the measurement of the gummies. I used AI. Started with two, then three… up to 5 today. Nothing.

Secondly, I’ve now taken up to 5 of these puppies with zero effect. And I mean zero. Not so much as an inkling of a feeling of a whisper of an altered state. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Thus, happy to take recommendations. I’m looking for a mild euphoria is all. Just a “get me through the day” kinda buzz. Nothing spectacular or dramatic. Seems like tincture might be the way to go.

Just got an M5 and my old Apple CD/DVD drive no longer works with it. Any recommendations on what I should buy?

I’m looking to rip/burn CD’s primarily but would like the ability to do similar with DVD’s.

Thank you in advance.

What’s Paul’s solo Masterpiece?

At this time of year, it’s this. Sounds spectacular on a golden summer evening. It’s got everything: rockers, ballads, psychedelia, jazz, pop… and it all hangs together in the most beautiful way. Paul turning 50 with the bit firmly between his teeth. I love the first album, Wild Wood and Stanley Rd but, for me, this is where he completely transcended his past and made something really fresh. An album as a work of art. Easily in my Top 10 of all time. And it’s a really English record too which I love about it.

Brilliant fans view documentary about Italia 90. Made by Kevin Allen, son of actor/comedian Keith.

Probably the best fans eye view documentary ever made about following England. That it covers the emotional roller coaster of Italian 90 is almost a bonus. Glorious, glorious stuff.

Edit: Kevin is Keith’s brother. My bad.

If you kids have ever wondered about why us olds always bang on about Italia 90…

One Night in Turin tells the unlikely but epic story of England at Italia 90. (I have been one my Dad and I don’t care.)

What’s Paul’s Most Underrated Album?

As a long time devotee and collector my feelings about each album tend to wax and wane, often with the seasons. Right now I’d pick Illumination as the most underrated album in his solo discography. It’s not his best but there’s a quiet joy and openness to it that I find enchanting when I’m in the mood.

Any thoughts?

Hatchback creates music that sings of the Cosmos, full of deep resonant tones, glistening arpeggios, lush pads and harmonic motifs.

‘**Phaser For The Ocean, Chorus For The Moon’**is his magnum opus, a sprawling masterwork that encompasses ambient, new age and environmental music to wondrous effect. Soaked in Californian consciousness, the album is a balm like no other for these troubled times.

When I first was getting into the creative side of music making in my teens, I was heavily influenced by concept albums like ‘Quadrophenia’ and ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’, as well as epic pieces that took up an entire side of a record: Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’,  Yes’ ‘Close To The Edge’,  Klaus Schulze’s ‘Nowhere Now Here’,  Miles Davis’ ‘Shhh/Peaceful’ and ‘He Loved Him Madly’. In the extreme, these ideas coalesced in double albums where each side of each record is occupied by a single title – Yes’ ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’, and Tangerine Dream’s ‘Zeit’ being primary examples. When I returned to making music after moving back to Northern California in 2020, the first piece I recorded landed around the 20-minute mark, and the idea of creating three other long pieces to realize a full album felt like a natural – if indulgent – goal. From there, each new piece followed sequentially. Four songs. My fourth album. – Sam Grawe
