WHAT IS THE PRIMARY GOAL of the MiSTer project: Preserving retro hardware knowledge or Making more systems playable?

In the last few days, I've read a few posts about core development where a rivalry has begun between two different points of view.

The first preference is how things are built, preserving knowledge, craftsmanship, and the expertise of human core development.

The second is more about what gets built, making as many different systems available as possible for the community.

So what is the real goal here, what do you think?
