My first foray into solo role playing…

…and I’m hooked! I’ve never done a group TTRPG, and recently discovered solo. Picked up Carved by the Garden and am loving it! Using my Hellboy playing cards adds a nice touch, too!

[pubq] How do I move beyond publishing with a hybrid publisher?

Tl;dr: I fell for the hybrid/vanity publisher “scam”-will that impact my opportunity to get a real publisher for future books?

In my mid twenties I had written a book I was (and am) proud of, and had a series planned out. I started by submitting to agents and had no luck. I then began submitting to publishers that didn’t require agents and, long story short, ended up signing a series deal with a hybrid (vanity) publisher. At the time I believed there was an actual difference between hybrid and vanity publishers.

Fast forward 7 years, and I (unsurprisingly) have made no money from my 5 hybrid-published books. To the point where I have no desire to keep writing the series, nor does the publisher seem to care when or if I publish the next book.

Instead, I’ve been putting my writing energy to improving my writing and working on other projects so that I can write something that will attract agents and real publishers.

My two question are these:

  1. When submitting my new novel to agents, and short stories to magazines, do I even reference the hybrid-published books?
  2. Would it be beneficial to submit and publish new work under a different name?

ETA:
The contract is for 9 books, the publisher just agreed to let me wrap it up with book 6 (this will be doable).
As far as my IP, I looked over the contract again and I automatically get rights to these books back 7 years after publication of the final book.

Started Reading Crowley

I’ve been wanting to read Crowley, but never got around to it. Then with the news of his passing I went to my favorite used bookstore. I bought a copy of Daemonomania because it caught my interest. Came home and bought the first of the series on Kindle.

So far I’m enjoying it, and am wondering if it’s as complex as Wolfe’s works?

I published with a ‘hybrid’ publisher, wanting to move beyond that

Edit: I know ‘scam’ isn’t the best word, but I was definitely misled. Partially my fault for not doing more research.

Daughter gets my humor

It’s so great when your kids get your sense of humor.

6yo daughter pretends she hurt her leg.

Me: Do you want Beak (our dog) to lick it?

Her: No! I want him to throw up on it!

Anyone going to the Phoenix show at the Van Buren?

I’ve been dying to see Atmosphere for years, and this time I can actually make it!

I want to line up early sine it’s GA, but it’ll be hot as fuck.

For those going to this show, how early are you planning to get there?
