Worries about Deidre Henderson & the Lt. Governorship as a whole
I’m glad Deidre Henderson is standing up for Utah voters’ privacy. She deserves credit for that. But seeing people already talk about her as a future governor gives me pause, mostly because I remember how I felt about Spencer Cox when he was lieutenant governor.
I used to be a public information officer for an agency, and I went to a conference in St. George where Lt. Gov. Cox was one of the closing speakers. He asked people to put their phones away, explicitly saying he didn't want to be recorded, then spent a good ten minutes criticizing Trump and talking about how worried he was for the Republican Party. I left genuinely impressed.
Now he would probably tell you that he changed his mind about Trump. But I think he would be lying: Spencer Cox as a person, as a Lt. Gov, and as Governor all have their own interests; in the end no matter who fills the seat, as long as they have an "R" next to their name, I don't trust that they won't take marching orders from higher-ups, or cater to increasing interest in the platform of the opposition party.
That’s what makes me cautious about turning Henderson into a political hero based on this moment. Sometimes it feels like the lieutenant governor can be just different enough from the governor to give more moderate voters someone to identify with, while the direction of the state stays the same. Am I being too cynical? What would Henderson need to do for you to believe she’d govern the way she’s acting now?
