Car totaled by an uninsured motorist

My husband was rear-ended earlier today, resulting in our family car being totaled. He is still at the crash scene, and I’m currently out of town.

When the police arrived, we learned that the driver who hit him was uninsured, and the vehicle wasn’t even registered. The police issued him a ticket, but he was still allowed to leave the scene.

My husband is now experiencing a headache and nausea. The EMTs suggested that he take an Uber to the hospital to avoid additional expenses, but that didn’t sit right with me. I told him to go by ambulance instead. They also wanted us to arrange our own tow truck.

I’m assuming we’ll need to go through our own insurance, but is there anything else we should be doing right now? Would a lawyer be helpful in a situation like this? I’ve never dealt with anything like this before, especially involving an uninsured driver.

I also don’t know how the towing process works in this situation or who is responsible for paying for it. The police and EMTs are asking my husband to make decisions, but he doesn’t feel well and isn’t thinking clearly at the moment.

I’m open to any advice from people anyone who has dealt with something similar.

***** THANK YOU ALL! *****

I really appreciate all of the advice and responses.

I’m still shocked that someone can drive with a revoked license, no insurance, rear-end another vehicle, and apparently not even be given a field sobriety test.

Does anyone get Brazilian or Dominican blowouts regularly?

I’ve been considering getting Brazilian/Dominican blowouts more consistently (twice a month). I know repeated blowouts can loosen your texture over time, and I’m okay with some level of change. What I’m more curious about is actual damage.

Did your texture eventually bounce back, or was the change permanent?

How often do you get blowouts done?

Just trying to hear real experiences before I commit to doing them more consistently.
