Tribute to Ocarina of Time - painting series

I painted 13 digital pieces to capture some of my memories and feelings playing Ocarina of Time!

I hope you can scroll through these pictures and relive some good memories of playing this game for the first time.

It’s interesting that as I get older, playing through some of my favorite video games becomes more difficult for a number of reason. I have less time, I don’t have the same sense of childlike exploration, I have instant access to the walkthroughs, etc. Creating this series was a perfect way to really feel like I was living through the game again, the same way it felt when I played it as a kid for the first time.

On top of that, this was great practice for me in creating concept art-like illustrations that each tell a story. I’m looking forward to practicing more and capturing more memories by doing a Wind Waker series next! I already have many ideas of how I’d like to improve.

Hope you enjoy!

Process of a Zelda painting

I’m not an expert in concept art/paintings like this, but thought it would be fun to document my approach this time

1 - gathering inspiration for composition, sketching some value thumbnails

2 - choosing one thumbnail and experimenting with composition, scale, color etc

3 - choosing one color scheme and further developing that, with some details along the way

4 - paint! And make sure I retain what was originally appealing to me about the initial sketches and thumbnails
