That's one of the reasons why "skin color" doesn't equal "race" for Brazilians (and most Latin Americans) - Mixed and proud!

That's one of the reasons why "skin color" doesn't equal "race" for Brazilians (and most Latin Americans).

This doesn't mean that "Latin Americans don't understand what racism/colorism/texturism/featurism" are. These phenomenons are still very pervasive across the continent, but they lead to a discussion much more related to the "appearance" itself than to the "DNA of the person".

Keep in mind also that during 19th and 20th centuries, Brazil had huge immigration waves from West Asia, Japan, Italy and Germany.

In Brazil, miscegenation is a core pilar of national identity for the better and for the worse: for a long time, it was used to deny discrimination, and even though we're aware of the systemic r*p* that taints our history; it's also observed miscegenation as a collective idea that "anyone can look Brazilian" reinforcing a sense of belonging regardlessly of how you might look, including any and every root and all walks of life.

The work of Édouard Glissant (decolonial writter from Martinique) offers one of the most profound and beautiful philosophical defenses of mixedness, creolization, and cultural plurality ever written. For Glissant, racial and cultural mixing was not a sign of loss or dilution. It was a form of creation.

What is it about "being westerner"? Any thoughts?

More often than not, we see some people positioning themselves as some sort of "model to the world". Some people somehow talk like they're aspirational, as if the result of being developed in the world inherently leads to be similar to them when actually we have no clear evidence of that.

Do you think "Being a westerner" or "having westerner values" is becoming an expression that is losing its meaning and revealing itself as a self-promotion propaganda? or do you think it's still coherent these days and it has its values?

Have you ever felt like there's some sort of repetition on "being westerner" or on "our westerner way of life" in the Media or even in places like this subreddit? If so or if not so, why do think that is? Any thoughts?

edit: I kid you not, I've seen a couple of europeans snapping out because I asserted "europe isn't a place I'd like to move to", they acted not only like surprised, but also "kinda ofended" as if I was attacking or something, or maybe as if I should "aspire to move there".

The title is self-explanatory.

- Pro-LGBTQ+
- subreddits that specifically talk about imperialism/colonialism/soft power/narratives anti-west/immigration
- subreddits that discuss critically the issues regarding identitarism
- Leftist gay clubs
- etc

Thank you, guys!

Why do you think the most successful region in the Miss Universe Contest is Latin America and the Caribbean?

Answers should be better than just "we have the most beautiful people/women". I mean, where does our appeal come from? I know that the idea of "being beautifully exotic" comes to mind, but I'd like to get better and more thoughtful insights.

Anyone, any idea?

Is Miscegenation part of the founding myth of your country's national identity?

A founding (or origin) myth is a narrative that explains the beginnings of a civilization, institution, or nation. These stories help shape cultural identity and legitimize a society's values.

In Brazil, miscegenation is a core pilar of national identity for the better and for the worse: for a long time, it was used to deny discrimination, but it's also observed as a collective idea that "anyone can look Brazilian" reinforcing a sense of belonging regardlessly of how you might look, including any and every root and walks of life.

Since miscegenation is a well known phenomenon in our continent, I was wondering if it's also part of your national view on your country's identity. Thank you!

My results and my photos! (Italy+Germanic+Balkans+Ashkenazim+Africa+Andean??)

- Different photos, different lightnings, I'm more tanned in some. I'm feeling like a true Brazilian melting pot. I'm from Alagoas in the Northeast of Brazil. Tests were by Genera.

- Europe 73% (Italy 38% Iberia 15% Western Europe 7% Balkans 7% Basque 5% Ashkenazim <2%) || Africa 19% (Gold Coast 8% East Africa 6% West Africa 5%) || Américas 5% (Andean 5%) || MENA 3% (Magreb)

- Y-DNA Haplogroup: I || Mt-Dna Haplogroup: L3

- Do you guys know any other platforms to submit my Raw Data for free? I wonder if I'd get different results since I didn't expect so many different areas in Europe and Africa. The Andean heritage surprised me because it feels like "why andean and not more from here".

- I have no idea about where I "come from". I mean, I'm 100% Brazilian as far as my family tree is concerned.

- Additional comments and observations will be appreciated

Thanks in advance!
