Does anyone else have a social worker as their CPN?

I am wondering if anyone else is in this situation? In my area CPN’s are only for people with bipolar, schizophrenia etc. My mental health social worker acts as my CPN, I text her all the time and she is available most days for a phone call if not several. The previous city I lived my CPN was a MH nurse.

Working as a SEN teaching assistant

How difficult is this job for someone who is autistic?

I didn’t get the support I needed in school but I did get good grades in school. I think I would find it really rewarding helping someone with SEN in a school.

How difficult is this job? I could only do it part time. I don’t have any qualifications or experience. I don’t have a degree. I have had bad experiences in work because I need accommodations and don’t mask. So I have no idea if this job is possible for me.

Did anyone else only realise they were abused later in life?

I am in my late twenties but I feel like this must be quite late to realise you went through abuse?

Long story short is I knew I went through emotional neglect growing up and I have had severe CPTSD for the past 5 years. My dad died when I was 18, which was 10 years ago. I struggled massively with his death but I knew my reactions to his death at the time were over the top. I cut friends out of my life. I felt broken and I just couldn’t understand what was wrong. I realise now it was because there was no chance I could get an apology once he died. Over the past 10 years I’ve sought help for my mental health and sadly in that time developed anorexia. It was in a session with a dietician in the past 6 months that she said that being refused food on a regular basis, a parent using this as a method of control, and being shouted at for trying to get food is abuse. This went on when we went out for food as well. I knew this wasn’t a positive thing to go through as a child but I didn’t realise it classified as abuse. But I went through emotional neglect at home and school too so I really overlooked this experience, since my emotional needs were otherwise not met. It has made me realise how bad the emotional neglect was that I thought being refused food regularly was not that bad, or even fine? (To clarify, I was refused food because my dad was struggling mentally, it was not due to financial reasons or inaccessibility. He will have known what he was doing but it went on weekly for years)

Support group for trauma survivors

Specifically childhood neglect and abuse.

Is there one of these around?

Just would be nice to connect to people who have also been affected due to lifelong trauma, I feel very alone.

It took me 28 years to realise this was abuse

I had a mostly happy childhood and it has taken till adulthood to realise that some things that happened to me were neglect and abuse. Neglect I was more sure about and I won’t go into that here. Regarding abuse, me and my siblings were refused food every Saturday by my dad until the evening when we all had a big meal. When I tried to steal any food from the kitchen, I was profusely shouted at. My dad was furious and he made it clear it was not acceptable. I think I struggled the most with it so my dad’s anger was directed at me. He would tell me I was not allowed any food. Even back then, I knew it was not done maliciously and it was a way for him to control something (I am sure he had undiagnosed autism and he got stressed a lot). I had no idea that this way even bad and it was a dietician when I was under eating disorder services who explained it could be classed as abuse. My dad tried his best, we went on great holidays, I have happy memories, so it is hard to feel like something like this was even bad even though this and other things I went through have caused me to have severe mental illness as a adult. My dad died unexpectedly when I was 18 from heart disease, and I am sure stress was the underlying cause. It is difficult coming to terms the ways I was undersupported growing up while missing and grieving him.

What does it mean when a psychiatrist says this?

Every single time I see my psychiatrist in the CMHT she says she thinks I am not ready for psychological therapy. She said it last week despite the fact I have been stable for a while. I cope mostly with avoidance and I am yet to actually ask her for the therapy or tell her I am ready. She has not provided me with any other therapy in the meantime to help me become more stable. I am struggling to understand why she says this every single time. I am wondering if she is saying it to try to then get a response from me about it such as ‘No I do feel I am ready’ or something along those lines. Because she says this to me every time I see her regardless of how I am doing. It is starting to feel a bit demoralising so I am wondering if there is an intent to help me by her asking this?

Autism focused NHS occupational therapy for adults

Does anyone know if a service like this exists for adults in NHS Lothian? Would I need to go private? I am under a CMHT.

I can’t tell when I am overwhelmed

I had a really bad day yesterday. I thought I was having a mental health crisis.

I phoned my social worker and psychologist and they both said I was overwhelmed and needed to rest, either sleep or watch a comforting show.

So that’s what I did and they were correct.

I had no idea I was overwhelmed… I was just crying a lot and had bad thoughts.

I would like to be able to tell when I am overwhelmed.

Does anyone have advice on how I can learn this?

(I live alone, my support visit/call me)

Pushed myself yesterday and I am still angry

I did two tasks yesterday that I usually do with support. I managed to do them!

But yesterday evening I was feeling angry for hours. Extremely irritated. Feeling so bad mentally.

Today after sleeping I still feel angry and not good. All I am doing today is rest.

I am worried how many days this will last.

I really struggle to know what to do when I feel like this.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Criminal record

Am I able to get some hope? I got a criminal record in 2024 during a period of severe menfal illness. I got minor charges but including assault of a police officer (no injury). I had NHS psychiatrist at the time, seeing her regularly, she has since tried to explain to me I am not a criminal and it was a side effect of mental illness. Unfortunately I am very hard on myself, I have history of anorexia, so I am finding it very tough needing to live with a criminal record for actions I did not mean. Unfortunately because I was not under psychosis I could not get my mental illness taken seriously by the court but I was given a community sentence to attend women’s criminal justice service. I see a psychologist there. Does anyone have advice on how to move on and feel less bad about this?

Confused

I made a sarcastic comment on someone’s Tiktok, to agree with her point of view towards someone’s mean comment. Her caption was sarcastic. Then she liked my commenf and blocked me. My comment was making fun of the person she was making fun of. I said it was sarcasm. Do people not like sarcastic comments even if they are using sarcasm because I am really unsure what I did wrong? This girl is HSN autistic and I liked her content, I am really confused. I can often get things wrong but I don’t know what I did. Is someone able to help? I feel really low about this, her content made me feel less alone.

Can’t go to bed early

I live alone and have real trouble not going to bed at a ridiculous hour. I don’t know how to go to bed early. I love staying up late usually till 2 or 3am because I can actually relax and enjoy a hobby.

(Before anyone asks yes I do have ADHD but it is medicated so my ADHD is managed as much as possible)

Unfortunately this is at the moment affecting my wellbeing because I am struggling with exhaustion. So I realise I need to try to sort this.

I need practical advice on how to get myself to go to bed earlier, maybe by midnight at the latest. Does anyone have advice? What works for you?

Struggling

I was discharged from the psychiatric ward two weeks ago.

I have been really upset tonight because there are two new men living in my building, they were talking so loudly outside my window and it was loud even with my noise cancelling headphones on.

I have lived here for three years and there has been no noise out there.

Home is the only place I am safe.

I am really not coping.

Volunteering with animals

Hi,

Does anyone know anywhere currently looking for a volunteer to help with animals?

I came out of the psych ward a couple of weeks ago. My psychiatrist has mentioned volunteering with animals a couple of times.

I have never had a pet and I have no experience with animals so would need to be for beginners.

ADHD medication

Can ADHD medication increase your support needs? Or does it just make existing support needs more noticeable? I started recieving formal support at the same time that I found an ADHD medication and dose that works for me so I don’t know if my support needs have just became clearer with getting the support I need, or whether ADHD medication caused this.

Can only sleep in winter pyjamas

I am facing a bit of a problem regarding my sensory issues. I am very hyposensitive and I can only sleep in winter pyjamas which are fluffy and thick. I also sleep with two duvets. This causes a bit of an issue in heatwaves. I have tried sleeping in lighter pyjamas with full sleeves and summer pyjamas with shorts but I just can’t get to sleep in them. I don’t know how else to manage feeling too hot when I need to sleep with the feeling of weight on me. I would not be able to sleep with a window open or air con due to the noise so I don’t know how else to manage feeling too hot?

Is anyone else a loner?

I don’t know if I am a loner because the only people I want in my life are support workers who are paid to be in my life.

There is a disability group in my area I have been to and I am not very interested in actually making friends. I am just not interested. I am not interested in having a partner either.

I watch true crime and have just been watching one about a psychopath so I can worry I am one of those! I hear autistic people with partners, friends, and I just don’t relate! I did have friends at school.

Is it normal to only want social interaction with carers if you have higher support needs? I would like reassurance that this is not concering.
