A user on r/historymemes commits one of the gravest sins imaginable: criticizing Napoleon.

Link to the post

A person I'm assuming to be a POC posts on r/historymemes critiquing Napoleon.

>It's genuinely depressing when the comments on memes praising Napoléon on this sub can be summarised as "Napoléon good cause he didn't kill the people I like (Jews) or myself (Polish), the fact he killed the people I don't like (the Blacks) is irrelevant. He reinstated slavery but it was actually based and giga pilled" The French Revolution had already abolished slavery. It is irrelevant what Britain or Spain were doing, Napoléon took control when slavery had already been legally abolished for a decade. He chose to reverse it and then start a Genocidal war sending his lackies to re establish it. That is probably why some people compare him to Hitler. But let us not get into Napoléon's own views on Black people or else you will realize he and Hitler were more alike. But sure lets just handwave it away as British propaganda and label it "complicated" and "typical for the time". Like I get it, you (white) guys like to heap praise on your controversial heroes on this sub all I ask at the very least is that you don't handwave away why some of us in this community don't like certain historical figures.

This, naturally, causes an uproar

>Look, no one's perfect.

>Hey guys, imagine if people weren't entirely good or bad but grey, with some good actions and some bad ones. I know, it sounds dumb. But just imagine.

>Yet another history meme post of a person disappointed that an 18-19th Century figure isn’t progressive enough for their 21st Century tastes.

>What a dog shit meme. A lot of Napoleon’s decisions can be explained by him being a man of this time. Judging historical figures as if they lived in the 21st century is dumb

> Fake empathy, baseless accusation of racism because a number of people on the subreddit disagree with several of your controversial takes. Took me 4 seconds to check your post history to see a trend. I'm going to assume you are insufferable IRL and struggle to form relationships out of niche online communities.

There's also this dude who I'm not posting because he gets quite angry and types an entire novel. If you want to read it, heres the link.

That's not to say there's weren't some people siding with the OP

>I think it's more referencing an earlier post here that was asking why people don't like Napoleon and referencing his treatment of European Jews. I think the other stuff was all said in the comments because there was basically no pushback in the comments against the conclusion that Napoleon was a great guy. Also some comments saying that he's, or something similar. I find it interesting that on the post claiming he was a great guy with no major flaws most of the comments were in support of that and lamenting how "misunderstood" he is. But on the post accurately pointing out BOTH the good and the bad everyone is suddenly concerned with nuance and how real people aren't actually all good or all bad (I haven't gone back to check the post since I saw yesterday, so I apologize if the balance of comments on that other post has changed)

>Yet another history meme post of a person disappointed that an 18-19th Century figure isn’t progressive enough for their 21st Century tastes. When Napoleon Bonaparte reinstated slavery in 1802, it caused a wave of outrage among abolitionist writers, poets, and public figures who viewed it as a profound betrayal of the French Revolution's ideals. It's ironic because you're making a reductive modern political "gotcha" post while displaying a total ignorance of the historical context you're talking about. Wordsworth penned his famous sonnet "To Toussaint L'Ouverture" because he was horrified by Napoleon’s brutal expedition to crush the Haitian Revolution and restore slavery, I know it’s a meme sub, but the standard of historical debate here can be incredibly poor.

>This sub fucking loves authoritarians damn. Guys here will make endless excuses for this type of shit and then turn around and make McCarthy proud.

>Judging historical figures as if they lived in the 21st century is dumb

I'm so sick of seeing this take... Wordsworth penned his famous sonnet "To Toussaint L'Ouverture" because he was horrified by Napoleon’s brutal expedition to crush the Haitian Revolution and restore slavery. I know it’s a meme sub, but the standard of historical debate here can be incredibly poor. Napoleon was judged in his own time it's not a modern imposition. Especially when he declared himself emperor (Empereur des Français) in 1804, just two years after reinstating slavery.

>He also did this little thing where he started the deadliest string of wars in European history at that time for no real reason other than his own ego, I think that's worth mentioning too.

There's also this thread here where someone tries to discuss Napoleon's issues.

A few gems in the rough

> He was Hitler "prerelease version" in a way
Not as bad as the "official version" but yes he was bad!

>Napoleon did not commit genocide the target of the reprisals were the insurgents not the race and it was mostly directed towards combatants.

>I'd ask Napoleon why did he commit Genocide if he didn't want to he compared to Hitler. Is he stupid?

A03 fics that are just fluff?

Kinda what the title says. I have seen posts in the past about a03 fics, but I was looking for some that are more about fluff and general non sexual intimacy. Does anyone know any good tags?

Kidnapping, Japan🤗, and other interesting statements on a post about recorded kidnapping in Japan.

Kidnapping and Unlawful Deprivation of Liberty in Broad Daylight on a Public Street in Shibuya, Japan. Nobody Does Anything.

I was gonna add more jokes, but I genuinely can't find anything funny about this, so imma just thow this in.

Someone in the comments gives important context to the video

I saw the OP posted this on threads..she was a tourist visiting. She asked a staff(i dont remember if it was a janitor or someone worked at the convenience store) if they should help. The man only said *underwear* then went about his way. The tourist just stood in shock. Also she did went to the police afterwards and police just said *OK*.

You'd think that this would be the end of the discussion, right?

Except no. As one user helpfully tries to point out

I doubt a kidnapper would bother picking up all of his victim's personal belongings. Feels like there is more to this story...

Someone pushes back with

Just because they might be in a relationship and he’s getting her things doesn’t make it not kidnapping

Of course, not all see it the same way

A few that I found (before I decided to skip because this was terrible for my mental health)

She could be absolutely drunk or off meds, qnd he is trying to get her home (her home). Lots of assumptions being made. The police should have gotten involved though, and sorted out the situation.

What if and its a big what if.. what if she is done with life, her son just died to yakuza gang violence, and she wants to end her life. He is shoving her against her will and forcing her into a car while she is having a mental breakdown. He is actively SAVING her life? since we do not know the circumstances here, all we can do is internet speculate that this man is an aggregious asshole. RIGHT????????? She could also have a T10 premier tungsten-alloy carbon blue katana in her dress. She is wanting to murder the person across the street, and he isnt letting her. He is actively trying to resist her desire to murder.. against her will. WELL WE DONT KNOW!!!! for all the downvotes. HOW DARE I CREATE UNLIKELY BUT VERY FLORIDIAN SITUATIONS THAT COULD BE ON AN EPOSIDE OF COURT CRIME TV. HOW DARE I SNUFF THOSE INTERNET TORCHES AND BLUNT THOSE PITCHFORKS! THEY ARENT SITTING RIGHT WITH MY BLUE HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone makes a statement

"Prolly his wife, it's ok to shove her in a cab and take her home when she starts acting up in public" - Japanese that watch it happen prolly Tourist that record asks people around and even goes to police, no one cares apprently, culture difference in some places are very wild.

To which a person feels the need to respond

Don't be disrespectful toward another culture just because it's different from your own.

They double down in this too

Laws aren’t the same in every country. For example, in one country the age of majority might be 18, in another 19, and in yet another 17. Laws differ, and so do people’s perspectives. What’s considered a crime in one place might be perfectly normal elsewhere. For example, I love bacon, but in some places it’s banned. That just horrifies me.

Now, not all people find the need to defend this, so in the interest of fairness (and my need to beleive that there are good people in this world) I'm putting this in

A great example showing WHY Japan has "low rates" of sex crime

Anyone who says “this isn’t kidnapping because they know each other” is actually stupid

And of course, any post involving japan won't be real unless it involves this

Kidnapping : 👎🤨😥 Kidnapping, japan : 🤩😍

Why is hate against children so normalized?

Today, I was in the park with a friend and their child, and while we were walking, their child fell over and skinned their knee bad, which of course caused them to cry loudly.

Now I will admit, it was loud a shrill and definitely not pleasant to hear, especially when we were trying to disinfect the wound.
But then a group of guys walked past and told us to “smack it on up the head till it stops”
And then literally no one said anything, In fact a few people even laughed.
I understand being child free, in fact I support people who do, it is their right. But I feel like simply hating against children is seen as funny or okay. Like why? Why is it so okay to hate children?

Why do so many F/M romances fall into very Heteronormative roles, even when the source material isn't?

I want to preface this by saying this: I'm a man. I read fanworks primarily for my own self interest, and I understand the whole premise of "don't like don't read", and "If you want it, write it" I write fanfic semi-reguarlly, and try to use the filter system, but I still sturggle to filter out.

the primary reason I came to fanworks was because I wanted to experience F/M romance works outside the idea of traditional heteronormative gender roles, and originally, I found it.There were a lot of works where the author works to break traditional gender barriers. Now most of the material is still somewhat traditional, and when the source material is, it don't begrudge it.

But then, when the source material itself is written with an F/M relationship breaking the traditional hetornormative mould and exploring new ideas, I find that the fanfic space more aggresivilly tries to revert it to traditional. This primarily comes about in two ways:

1: non muscular man suddenly gets muscular.

Like, this is especially prevalent when its men who being not muscular/not jacked is a specific character trait and their whole development is about how they are able to express strengths through nonphysical ways. Like, this is part of the reason why I like these characters: as a man who isn't very strong, I can relate better to these guys. Especially if these men canonically may not be overweight, but have a bit of a gut.

But almost universally, when I come upon these characters in fanworks, they suddenly have double d pecs, bulging biceps, six pack abs and a back that makes all local women swoon.

and I know I shouldn't let myself get to into this, but every time I read this about a character, I get a bit of dysmorphia. ( I know it's stupid, but then again, I have already made this post)

I know it’s "just" fanfiction, but it feels like the community is erasing the very thing that made the character relatable to me in the first place.

  1. A women who is noted for her strength, power, suddenly becomes this defenceless madien that needs the man to save her.

Now, I'm not talking about the Tramautized women who allow themselves to feel safe with their men. That is a good charecter trope that is often done very well.

Rather, its Women who are canonically noted for their immense strength, agency, or power suddenly become defenseless maidens who require the man to save them at every turn.

Like, they have their fundamental competence stripped away. She is suddenly written as being incapable of making a decision or winning a fight without him. She could be his bodyguard, but more often than not it's the man she's suppose to protect doing most of the fighting. Especially prevelant when it's a women with powers struggling to do the one thing she's strong at, and a man suddenly being competent at the one thing he's terrible at.

I know fanfiction is meant to be a playground for people to explore what they enjoy, and people are allowed to have their preferences. But when the entire archive of a fandom seems to push toward this "standardization" of gender roles, it makes it incredibly difficult to find stories that actually resonate with the version of the characters I fell in love with. It’s exhausting to feel like I’m constantly wading through tropes that are the exact opposite of what I’m looking for, especially when the source material was supposed to be the antidote to those exact stereotypes.

Help Looking for an Angel Marinette x Actually theologically pure Adrien fic.

I remember a fic on a03 that I can't find where it's essentially Marinette who is an angel (like from heaven angel) and she kills demons with a yo-yo while also protecting Adrien, who is a high value target among demons because he "pure".

I remember the work summer was something like: How Marinette woos Adrien by killing demons infront of him. I also remember the climax of the story is that she starts killing fellow angels too because they won't let him into heaven.

Can I have help finding this fic please?

When does Jealousy in Media (from women, that is) become misogynistic?

There's a new season of a show show releasing in about a week called My Adventure with Superman, and as I watch more and more of the promotional material, I am starting to realize that one of the plot points in the new show is gonna be Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) being jealous of the women around her Romantic Interest, Jimmy Olsen.

While I understand that Jealousy is a human emotion that is normal in media, it itself has faced criticism.

When is Jealousy in media misogynistic?

Death (Puss in Boots) vs Darth Vader

Conditions:

Death is still death(like he’s not just a superpowers individual) , and to make it fair, his Scythes are lightsaber resistant.

This is also the same Vader we see in Maul shadow Lord.

I think too much of people on this subreddit are going to be disappointed when Season 2 comes out.

Like, I can see that this show is well liked but....

Nearly everyone has come up with a narrative of events that they think is going to happen(can't complain, I've done the same thing) , and any deviation from it is going to be treated as bad writing. Nearly every other post in the last 24 hours is about how Devon is going to be Darth Talon, or Devon is going to a new Villian in future star wars.

It's good to keep expectations of Writing quality, animation quality, etc, but creating expectations around narrative events is stepping on a rake and being surprised when your nose hurts.

How does Daki find the strength to stick to his principles even to his detriment?

Like, I don’t get it. His people were genocided. The citizens that he worked to defend turned their backs on him. He’s left begging on the streets for kindness.

Yet he doesn’t steal. He still believes in the kindness of people, and chooses to hold into hope.

And unlike even Obi-wan, he doesn’t seem to have a crisis of faith, steadfastly believing that the Jedi way is right to the very end.

How does he do it? People have turned to the dark side for less.

Why does the kingdom seem to betray each other so easily?

Like, In almost every plotline the Kingdom is relevant, It's hard to see how they even work. Gabriel betrays them the moment he gets the Butterfly, he convinces Tomoe to betray them and then betrays them too. Audrey and Noe obviously seems to have their own intentions with the kingdom, and Nathalie is betraying her father.

So what even draws these people even together? Are they just rich people doing random stuff or do they even have a coherent plan?

Inspired by this post, I strongly urge you to check it out:Link

There's a moment in Episode 7, right has Devon and Rylee try to make their escape, Devon grabs Rylee's hand and tries tries to pull away, before being stopped by Maul.

I think it's interesting how Maul reacts, more more accurately, does not react. Rylee tries to defend Devon, but Maul shoves him away, almost as an afterthought.

This actually follows an established pattern within the show. Maul opts to focus on Lawson, Daki, and Devon. Hell, even 2BOT gets more attention from Maul than Rylee.

To him, Rylee is just a kid that's with them. In Maul's view he's not important.

Which is the opposite, actually, specifically in relation to Devon. It's when Rylee is captured that Devon abandons the fight and concentrates fully on rescuing him. It's Rylee's suggestion to leave that causes Devon to run. After their escape from Marrok, and after Maul turns off his lightsaber, it's Rylee that she first checks up on instead of adressing him. Then there's the Finale, where she looks at him first, and then agrees to be trained under him (while she was probably well on her way at that point, Rylee proablly did push her over the edge.)

There are all events that happen Right in front of him yet.... he doesn't consider it.

This is because to Maul, There can only be one relationship worth investing in: The connection between master and apprentice. That's why he focuses killing Daki first, because in his eyes, he's the only one connected enough to Devon to be a hinderance.

It's not just Devon, too. When attempting to take Ezra, Maul targets his master Kanan, often ignoring the rest of the Ghost Crew, and even Ahsoka, because he cannot see how the others can be of any value to Ezra.

This binary view of relationships is why Maul will eventually fail in the long term, because despite all he tries, he struggles to see beyond the master and apprentice relationship, and it's the other important people in his target's lives that end up proving against him.

To give some context, this was the original problem:

>Everyone on Earth has two buttons appear in front of them. If the majority of people press the blue button, everyone lives. If the majority of people press the red button, everyone who pressed the blue button dies. What button do you press?

Naturally, this problem has torn apart has torn apart the subreddit r/trolleyproblem . There are numerous posts about this, with...intersting memes about something that orginated on Twitter, also know as X.

A few gems from this post: Statistically, >50% is easier than 100%

>So many red buttoners justifying their choice to genocide up to 49% of the population. It’s wild to see.

>So many blue buttoners trying to explain how willingly becoming part of the 49% is a good idea

>Red is always correct. If someone else wants to die so be it. I am not risking my life for strangers

> If I choose red along with over %50 of the population, the guilt simply won't leave me alone. I might as well die at this point. If I choose blue along with over %50 of the population than that's the good ending. If I choose blue and over %50 of the people chooses red, than that means half of the people are either pure evil who wants other people to die, or they are simply selfish and don't care about the lives of other people and I wouldn't wanna live in such world anyways. So blue all the way and to anyone who picks red: Fuck you.

>Blue buttoners will do anything to try to convince you to join their death cult

A few more gems from this post: Who ya gonna vote for?

>I initially leaned blue, but after witnessing the gross moral aggrandizing and hubris of blue button redditors, I windmill slap red with the hope that we somehow reach the 50% threshold

> Is this a variation or an attempt to restate the original? If the latter, it should be: Genocidal Trolly Party: Win or lose, we won't kill anyone. Anti-murder Party: If we lose the election, we will murder anyone that voted for us.

>Blue button is the "we put a gun to our head and will pull it if you dont join us" side You ever get on a plane and see that they tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before trying to help others? This is that. Remove yourself from the trolley problem and dont push the big blue "i jump on the tracks" button

Of course, one can't have a drama with it's own moment of reflection

>this sub has stretched itself so thin on this hypothetical it is becoming a simulacrum of itself

I chosen but two posts from the subreddit, but this question has dominated it for days now, so If i tried being comprehensive, then this would break text requirements. I've seen abortion debates more chill than this.
