Annie should’ve been the Final Girl of the original Friday the 13th film instead of Alice
When compared to the first films of other iconic horror franchises like Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Scream, I feel like the original Friday the 13th film was always lacking something. And after watching it recently, I’ve realized that’s because of its lack of an interesting main character. Don’t get me wrong, Alice is nice and a pretty likable character we get to follow, but nothing makes her standout particularly from the other cast of characters. That’s why I feel like Annie should’ve been our main protagonist.
I mean, she’s the first character we’re introduced to after the opening credit, and once her journey ends at like the 20-minute mark, the movie feels like a compilation of scenes where the characters are just dicking around rather than there being an actual story. Even after they encounter Crazy Ralph hiding in the pantry, the characters do nothing with his warning, or even try to find info on what he’s talking about.
But imagine how much more engaging it would’ve been if the film followed Annie through until she made it to the camp. She could’ve relayed all the info and warnings she got to the other counselors even though she was skeptical about it herself. But after encountering Ralph for the second time at the camp, she would probably at least start to get curious about what the heck happened at this camp. The other counselors would also start to wanna get answers too, but since Steve was in town, this would cause them to try and look for answers themselves.
Also, Annie just had so much more charisma and spunk to her than Alice did, even with the little screentime she got. I’m not sure if Annie’s death was meant to be reference to ‘Psycho’ with the fakeout main character, but I just think the film would’ve benefited more if we followed her throughout the film. The first Friday the 13th film had somewhat of an element of mystery to it, because we as the audience wanna know what the hell happened at this camp. But the lack of urgency from our characters really undermines it.
I love the original Friday the 13th film and it’s definitely a classic. I just think it was severely lacking in the story department, which they really do improve on with the immediate sequels. Like imagine how much more impactful it would’ve been to have followed Annie throughout the movie, trying to find out as much as possible through newspaper clippings and stuff, and then she starts to put all the pieces together right in time for Ms. Voorhees to make her entrance. You could still have Pamela do her whole exposition dump, but it wouldn’t need to be as tedious since Annie would already have known about the situation but not the specifics.
