I do the Hoffmann method for French Press. Looking at upgrading my grinder for consistency and ease. Currently have a manual Kingrinder K6.

Budget: $500.00 USD

I already have an espresso grinder (Niche Zero), so I don't need the grinder to do espresso.

My recipe is a 50g to 750g water ratio for french press. The Kingrinder K6 is a great grinder for pour overs, but it feels a bit muddy with French Presses and it's a bit annoying since I have to grind ~3 times to get 50g worth of coffee.

I am thinking:

  • Fellow Ode 2
  • Baratza Encore
  • Eureka Mignon Crono Brew Coffee Grinder
  • Eureka Peppe Coffee Grinder

I have a lot of AA Energizer Lithiums. How can I use them to charge devices in an emergency?

I've looked online and it seems some of the chargers out there do not allow Lithium batteries to be used.

I'd like to be able to use my AA's to charge things in a pinch if needed.

No local place cleans the blower wheel/inside head unit, mine has mold. What's the best way to clean myself?

1920s home with a Mitsubishi MSZ-FH15NA wall unit. It's great, but the problem is no one around takes apart the heads units to clean the blower wheel.

I am fairly competent in mechanical and DIY work and attempted to try it using the videos on YouTube to take apart, but it was way harder than it looked/seemed. I ended up breaking a clip because it was pretty hard to pull/pry off a certain part, and am afraid to retry.

I live in Seattle (if anyone knows a service that does this please lmk, I haven't found one that will).

Making books of my child’s life has helped them tremendously

We got a tip from one of the teachers at daycare to take pictures of their day, print them out, cut them out and make a rudimentary book.

It’s helped so much that they kind of know the routines and what to expect and how to expect it. It’s led to them kind of understanding things and not freaking out so much.

The books are about 6-10 pages long and are easily digestible. Page 1. I wake up and have breakfast with my family (picture of all of us eating). Page 2. Then my dad drives me to daycare and I see my favorite trees (picture of being in seat and a cut out picture of a tree). Page 3 I say hello to my teachers and my teachers give me hugs! Etc.

It’s been so helpful just constantly reading the book and getting them into the routine mentally before bed, once they got home and on and off times.

Biker blew through a stop sign in Seattle, luckily car stopped in time!

Driving below the speed limit and accelerating fairly normally on the main road, Seattle biker rolled through the side street stop sign and had to do a hard brake to avoid hitting them. Luckily nothing happened!

This wasn’t a four way stop.

Bikes lately have been blowing through stop signs.

Lately a lot of bikes have just been blowing through stop signs. Glad they're safe and the car's systems stopped us, but stay safe out there everyone and be a bit more defensive on both sides.

Please watch the full video here for context (before, during and after with speed (mph) shown): https://streamable.com/q4obtb but was just driving up below the speed limit (23mph - videos make it look like I was driving fast, I was not), and car did a hard break. I didn't even see them blowing through the stop sign until last moment. You can see in the video posted.

I'd like to seed a lot of torrents, but finding myself having IO issues that causes everything to slow down?

  • Ubuntu Server 24.04.3, 6.8.0-136-generic Kernel
  • Docker version 29.6.2, build dfc4efb
  • http://ghcr.io/hotio/qbittorrent:release-v5.1.4
  • mergerfs v2.42.0
    • cache.files=off
    • func.getattr=newest
    • moveonenospc=true
    • dropcacheonclose=false
    • category.create=mspmfs
  • SnapRAID CLI v14.9
  • Intel i7-14700k | DDR4 64GB | Seagate Exos Enterprise (250MB/s) SATA | 2TB SSD for OS

qBittorrent Settings:

  • Connection:
    • Global maximum number of connections: 200
    • Maximum number of connections per torrent: 50
    • Global maximum number of upload slots: 8
    • Maximum number of upload slots per torrent: 4
  • BitTorrent
    • Enable DHT
    • Enable PEER Exchange
    • Enable Local Peer Discovery
    • Allow encryption
    • Torrent Queueing
      • Maximum active downloads: 4
      • Maximum active uploads: 10000
      • Maximum active torrents: 10000
  • Advanced
    • File pool size: 100
    • Outstanding memory when checking torrents: 32 MiB
    • Disk cache: 2048 MiB
    • Disk cache expiry interval: 60s
    • Disk queue size: 1024 KiB
    • Disk IO read mode: Enable OS Cache
    • Disk IO writem ode: Enable OS Cache
    • Coalesce read & writes: checked / enabled

I run qBittorrent via docker using the hotio image with PIA VPN enabled through the docker-compose. Nailed down the issue is with qBittorrent in terms of slowing down the server. IO is being consumed... I think cause of reads (?) or something with qBittorrent but the logs aren't helpful.

Not sure what the best config/setup is for seeding thousands of torrents. Like >5,000.

What a difference having a properly insulated and sealed home makes.

Had a lathe and plaster home that was quite leaky. On a hot 90+ day the inside only got to 80 with Mitsubishi heat pump wall register AC on full blast. On a cold day it was cold.

Had a new home built and we went with a SIP design. R60 roof and R30 walls and floor. Didn’t cheap out and went all in on a graphite infused foam all the bells and whistles.

Currently it’s very bright and over 90 and super smoky outside. Our Mitsubishi heat pump is at 72 and it’s actually 72 inside and it’s barely running. Our indoor air purifiers are running beautifully. Our family is safe and comfortable.

It’s pretty freaking amazing.

Which case would fit both a 240mm AIO and a 280mm AIO?

I have an Asus GPU dual slot GPU that has a 240mm AIO. Radiator 276 (L) x 120 (W) x 51.7 (H) mm including fan.

As well as an Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280. 317 (L) x 138 (W) x 65 (H) mm including fan.

Looking to build something that's small and compact that can fit both.

My kids love the steam machine!

Pure joy as we scrolled through the different games that were on sale, picked out a few that seemed very cool, downloaded very quickly and got to playing without a hitch.

We have a basic setup with a cheap LG TV so the quality isn't super great, but the controls have been really great for the games we're playing. We picked up Hades for under $7 and Golf With Your Friends for about $2 and they started playing both and been having a blast.

We have a Switch 2 and PS5, but this is getting a lot more usage. We're loving the controllers and the online play with other people.

Not sure if it's talked about in other reviews... but the achievements, online play and such is just an overall better experience than Switch 2 and PS5. Edit: What I mean about the achievements my kid is actively trying to get all the achievements which is fantastic.

1920s home. How do I make sure the musty smell doesn’t happen when running Dry or AC in a small room 10x10 room? Have a Mitsubishi hyperheat.

1920s home that’s lathe and plaster. I live in Washington so the weather outdoors is usually moist as well as indoors.

When I run AC or Dry the room has to be closed for fire safety and it’s usually at night (kids room). It’s about a 10x10 room I think. Have the smallest mini split to it and even then it might be oversized for the room I think.

I’ve tried to run auto and set to 68, but even then it leaves a musty smell after cooling.

Heating is a okay.

4.5 year old suddenly scared of the dark. Unsure how to approach cold or with warmth.

No changes other than suddenly “scared” of the dark, but they can’t explain what or why.

Unsure if taking the 100 walks method where we’re cold and emotionless is the appropriate action; or taking a more warm approach and letting them know we get scared too etc.

They’ve been kind of crying/screaming and saying “I’m so scared.” They don’t really give reasons as to why. Unsure if genuine or just a stalling tactic.

Child has a pretty full and fulfilling day with us and preschool.
