Unit-01DS : my 1st reshell

This build features the eXtremeRate Chameleon Green Purple shell while retaining the original green interior.

The goal was to modernize the Nintendo DS Lite while preserving some of its original character. Because custom green mods in the community are rare, I drew inspiration from Evangelion Unit-01 (EVA-01) from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The metallic, iridescent finish shifts from purple to green depending on the lighting, giving the console a sci-fi machine feel, while respecting the original green color.

To protect the shell while enhancing the aesthetic, I added a transparent crystal case from AliExpress. This creates a great layered effect, making it look as though the bright green interior is part of the inner machinery sitting beneath protective armor (like a EVA), rather than just another decorative color. I also swapped the buttons to introduce a touch of purple and green to the front, tying the entire design together.

Bonus: By keeping the original interior, I bypassed the headache of disassembling the hinge, screens, and ribbon cables.

Old-new stock on Amazon

So I was browsing Amazon this week and to my surprise found this 2008 case for the DS lite for 17€. I don't have any idea how this survived 18 years brand new, but I'm definitely going to use it for storage and transportation on long trips.

NNDDSS vs NDSI

So I've never actually seen someone comparing shaders between the new nnddss and the actual hardware, so I've put that to the test. TLDR; without shaders the rgds looks a bit more saturated compared to the ndsi screen, but if we apply any of the "natural vision" or ndscolor" shaders then suddenltly the screen looks significantly less saturated than the original hardware, so If I want to have the most accurate representation of what the original colors look like the best option is to just apply an grid shader (in this case I'm using ”Dot_d4", looks the closest to the original, high PPI small screen effect, of the dsi).

Anyway, this is just my 2 cents, just use whatever shaders you like and have fun.

-Device: original RGDS with stock Linux running a ported version of NNDDSS.

3DS on the Rotate

Basically I'm asking the council today if anyone was able to find a solution for my long term problem: I had tried Azahar/Azahar plus/other emulators on this device for 3ds and everything works EXCEPT quicksaves/quick load, it crashes the app. ChatGPT says the culprit is the 3gb of ram, not enough. Has anyone actually manage to work around this and made 3ds work on this device?

Thicc boy

Seriously, I think this is one of those devices that I need to see in person to make a final judgement. But for now it almost looks like the new RGDS Plus is the V1 and the old RGDS is the refined V2... Bigger chin, face buttons not aligned with the dpad, start/select are now vertical instead of horizontal, therefore breaking the symmetry with the home/rg buttons... But hey, maybe it's the most ergonomic device on the market, who knows, time will tell.

Square Heresy (RGRotate)

So, I don't know about the rest of the community, but I don't treat my rgrotate as an "emulation precision" machine, it's more of an eye candy type of device, I just want to play games and have some fun. Problem is, I love GBA, but 3:2 on this 1:1 3"5 screen is just to small. So after messing around I figured that 6:5 with bilinear filter ON, and some artistic shaders with a grid overlay is actually a pretty decent experience. If not comparing side by side with a true 3:2 screen my brain thinks everything is supposed to look the way it does. Hope this helps some of you!

MarioKart DX

I'm not even sure if I can share this, but look what I found in one of those Mall Shops where you can play arcade games (Oporto, Portugal).

RG28XX - change my mind

Although released more than 2 years ago, this device has, in my opinion, still the best power-to-size ratio on the market. (H700 chip, 1 GB of ram, tiny ass footprint) ☕

MINILOONG Pocket is still alive

Genuinely surprised for getting an official OTA update to the lastest RA version and FINALLY have the option to select the core. Maybe now the software is getting on par with the hardware of this underdog.

3rd time's the charm

So, this has been some exciting feedback in the last 2 days! So I gather all your knowledge, asked ChatGPT to resume it, and here's the final result, a proper vertical set-up, no scaling distortion, and no black bars on 75% of the screen according to ChatGPT! It was a bit weird to control de movements with my thumb and fire on the shoulder buttons with my palm, but now that I've mastered it I got a free hand to scroll reddit at the same time!

P.S.: anyone knows what that M-A-M-E stands for? ChatGPT says it's "Make A Meme Everyday" but I find it odd it's rotation is sideways.

I've learned my lesson...

Yesterday's post got a lot of feedback and I've read it all. The correct way to enjoy these systems is by respecting the horizontal, intended, aspect ratio. And I must say, it's a lot better, for example on NDS I can see both screens easily now, and no black bars on the sides! Thank you, I'm learning a lot on this community! -magicx zero40 btw.

RG CUBE Sale

Just saw this beast of a machine for the price of an RG DS at the European AliExpress app. It's early bird deal, if someone is interested (I already have one, best 3DS machine I got)

My luck has been drained to the bone

For the first time I caught an early bird deal on AliExpress, from a serious store that I already know. Do I need another retrohandheld? No. Would I miss this? Hell no.

RGDS rocknix/GammaOS

Has anyone try this before, installing GammaOS on the RGDS after having tried Rocknix on it? Because on the GammaOS page it says to not install it if we previously have tried Rocknix on the device. Any workaround or is this a non issue? Thanks.

I'm not even mad with the audacity.

Business is business I suppose. Still gave me a good laugh these 2 screen protectors, probably made of sapphire glass or something.

Honestly, it was a bit painful this review, especially coming from a big channel like this one, I've seen smaller, amateur channels actually better equipped and informed about our community...
