PS5SX2 1.8 released - Performance improvements & more

PS5SX2 1.8 released - Performance improvements & more

Another PS5SX2 update is out, this time mainly focused on performance and some smaller fixes.

What's new:

  • Spider-Man 2 & Need for Speed Underground 2: faster texture-cache lookups should improve performance in areas where they slowed down
  • More automatic GPU Readback "Don't Wait" cases, including The Punisher, Max Payne 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour
  • Lighter Vulkan driver work for every draw, helping games that push high resolutions
  • Game settings now save correctly even when the settings folder doesn't exist yet
  • Create/Share button no longer acts as Select; touchpad click remains Select
  • Profiler logs now show more information about where PS5SX2 is spending time
  • Software renderer logs now show why it is waiting for worker threads
  • Removed a background memory check that ran every 200 frames

Still being worked on:

  • Some games are still GPU-bound at higher resolutions
  • Several software-renderer slowdowns have been identified but haven't been fixed yet
  • Need for Speed Most Wanted: crashes when starting events or entering free roam in 1.7/1.8. The developer has confirmed the issue and says a fix is already done for the next update
  • High blending can have a noticeable performance cost at 4× and above

Updating from 1.6 or older: the PS5SX2 Installer does it for you. By hand: close PS5SX2 and replace only /data/homebrew/PPSA99203/eboot.bin. Keep your /data/PCSX2 folder: your settings, memory cards and save states are in it.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s “Physical” PS5 Release Requires a Digital Download

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s PS5 physical edition will ship on a single disc, but a digital download will be required to play the full game. That’s a noticeable change from the previous games: Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth both shipped on two discs, with the games fitting entirely across the physical media.

PlayStation Lawsuit Roster Grows: “Everyone Is Here” as Stop Killing Games Joins the Dutch Case Against Sony’s Digital Monopoly

Stop Killing Games has joined a Dutch lawsuit challenging Sony over alleged PlayStation Store monopoly practices. The campaign says it is backing the case brought by consumer group Stichting Massaschade & Consument (SM&C), which argues Sony has too much control over pricing and game distribution on PlayStation. The announcement comes as concerns continue to grow over the decline of physical game releases and the industry’s broader shift toward digital-only sales.

Japan Sounds Alarm Over U.S. Government’s Mario, Pokémon, and Naruto Meme Posts

Japanese officials are reportedly unhappy with recent U.S. government social media posts that used Mario, Pokémon, and Naruto in meme-style political content. Their concern is that using these characters in government messaging could create political associations that affect how the franchises are viewed internationally.

The story has caught attention in gaming and anime communities because Mario and Pokémon are two of Japan’s biggest video game brands, while Naruto remains one of its most recognizable anime franchises. Officials reportedly worry that repeated political use could blur the line between entertainment and government messaging and potentially hurt the franchises’ public image.

The report does not say that Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, or the Naruto rights holders have filed lawsuits. The focus is mainly on the broader concern that major Japanese pop-culture brands could become tied to political debates outside Japan.

The reaction highlights how easily posts involving well-known gaming and anime characters can attract global attention on social media.

Chinese Father’s 10-Yuan Lawsuit Could Tighten Gaming Rules for Millions of Young Players in China

A father in China has filed a symbolic lawsuit against Tencent, NetEase, miHoYo, and 37 Interactive, seeking just 10 yuan (about $1.50) in damages. He says the case is not about money but about forcing stronger protections for minors.

China already has one of the world’s strictest gaming systems for under-18s, limiting playtime and requiring real-name registration. The father argues that children can still bypass those rules by using adult accounts, borrowed IDs, or rented accounts.

According to the report, his son became heavily addicted to online games, often playing until 3–4 a.m., eating poorly, losing significant weight, and eventually being hospitalized after taking 18 fever pills.

If the court rules in his favor, major Chinese publishers could face pressure to introduce stricter identity checks and tighter account-sharing controls. Supporters say that could better protect minors, while critics argue it may also increase user monitoring, data collection, and restrictions on gamer privacy and account use.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Naoki Hamaguchi Wants Physical Game Culture to Remain

According to IGN, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says he is still actively pushing for a physical edition, although Square Enix has not made a final decision. The game is currently scheduled for Spring 2027, so there is still significant time before release for plans to change.

Hamaguchi also spoke about his appreciation for physical game culture, saying he loves seeing fans bring their copies to events for autographs and feels it would be “a shame to lose that.” His comments suggest that the push for a physical release is not only about sales, but also about preserving the connection between games and their communities.

For now, a disc release remains possible, but nothing has been officially confirmed.

This fan-control problem is an important issue that the PS5 jailbreak community should not ignore.

Reposting this because I think more PS5 jailbreak users should be aware of it.

For reasons that are still not fully understood, some jailbroken PS5 consoles can lose proper fan control. The fan may stay at a very low speed (around 19%) even while the console gets much hotter during games. Most users would never notice this unless they monitor temperatures.

Possible side effects can include higher APU temperatures, thermal throttling, instability during long gaming sessions, unexpected crashes, or shutdowns related to overheating.

This is especially relevant for users who already use ShadowMountPlus, because the new ShadowMountPlusFan release is a modified version of ShadowMountPlus that adds automatic fan-control management. It runs in the background and reapplies the fan settings whenever the PS5 launches a game, exits a game, returns to the home screen, enters rest mode, or wakes up again.

The goal is simple: if the fan control gets “stuck,” the plugin restores the settings so the fan can speed up when temperatures rise and slow down again when the console cools down.

I’m not posting this to create panic, and it does not mean every jailbroken PS5 is affected. I’m sharing it because many users already use ShadowMountPlus and may not realize that a fan-control issue can occur on some setups. If you use a jailbroken PS5, it is worth checking your temperatures and making sure your fan-control setup is working properly.

Note: I’m not the original developer of this modification. I’m sharing it to help raise awareness and encourage discussion about PS5 jailbreak temperature and fan-control behavior. Credit for the plugin and the technical work goes to

Sony's Physical Media Backlash Escalates as Fans Plan PS5 Blackout

The backlash against Sony's physical media plans is entering a new phase. Rather than limiting their frustration to social media, some PlayStation fans are calling for a coordinated week-long PSBlackout, encouraging players to participate from August 23 to August 30 in the hope that a visible drop in player activity will highlight growing concerns over the future of physical game ownership.

Square Enix's Switch 2 Strategy Is Turning Its Biggest Fans Against It

Square Enix is drawing increasing criticism over its Nintendo Switch 2 strategy, with fans accusing the publisher of prioritizing new sales over rewarding existing customers. The company has been criticized for offering no upgrade path for some Switch titles, requiring players to buy separate Switch 2 editions, while several physical releases use Game-Key Cards instead of including the full game on the cartridge.

The backlash has intensified concerns over consumer value, digital ownership, and the steady decline of true physical game releases, with many fans arguing that publishers are asking players to pay more while receiving less in return.

Sony's killing Infamous 2's servers so I archived all* of it's online content

On July 9th people noticed (reference) Sony had updated their EOL server list to include Infamous 2 and Festival of Blood servers which house all it's user-generated-content in the way of custom missions. I couldn't find anyone trying to archive the data, so I did it myself.

Infamous 2's UGC (IA) - 187,450 maps/missions

Festival of Blood's UGC (IA) - 16,008 maps/missions

This was an absolute slog. There isn't an API endpoint for getting all maps (that I could find) so I had to run through search terms for every download. For Infamous 2 that was 12k+ searches (most with thousands of results) and 4.9k+ for Festival of Blood. The all* is because there are absolutely missions I missed, but at the end I was getting 1 new mission for every 20 terms searched (on average).

There's currently not a drop-in replacement for the servers (I have a working proof of concept already but it needs some polish), but you can still manually add the files to RPCS3 or a CFW PS3.

Disgaea Creator Says PlayStation Should Scrap Its Consoles If It Goes All-Digital

The creator of Disgaea, Sohei Niikawa, has criticized PlayStation's reported decision to phase out physical games, arguing that if the company abandons discs entirely, it should "get rid of the hardware" as well. Speaking with Noisy Pixel at Anime Expo 2026, Niikawa said physical games offer something digital never can: a lasting connection between developers and fans through collectibles, signatures, and cherished memories. While he understands the business reasons behind the shift to digital, he believes removing physical media strips away a core part of what makes dedicated gaming hardware meaningful.

Report: PlayStation's Backlash Is Reportedly Scaring Off Paying Publishers

Note: The original report is in Chinese. The text below is a translation of the article.

According to a report translated from Chinese, citing claims originally made by Moore's Law Is Dead, some third-party game developers are reportedly growing frustrated with PlayStation's social media strategy.

The report claims that studios pay Sony thousands of dollars to secure promotional posts on PlayStation's official social media accounts. However, with PlayStation's social channels currently flooded with criticism, those paid promotions are reportedly being buried beneath backlash directed at Sony rather than the games themselves.

Anonymous sources cited in the report say some developers are questioning whether the premium marketing is still worth the cost if their announcements continue to be overshadowed by negativity toward PlayStation.

As of now, these claims have not been independently verified by major gaming news outlets.

The Digital Ownership Debate Just Got Bigger: EFF Takes Aim at Sony

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), one of the world's leading digital rights organizations, says Sony's digital-first strategy is eroding what it means to own a video game. The group argues that consumers are increasingly purchasing revocable licenses instead of products they fully control.

Consumer group argues Sony's end of physical discs proves players don't truly own digital games.

A Dutch consumer organization says Sony's decision to move away from physical games strengthens its ongoing lawsuit against the company.

The group argues that without physical discs, Sony has even more control over game prices, distribution, and access because PlayStation users can only buy digital games through the PlayStation Store.

It claims this reduces competition, keeps prices higher, and leaves consumers with fewer ownership rights.

The lawsuit seeks compensation for affected consumers and could have broader implications for digital game ownership if it succeeds.

A rare win for digital ownership: Chinese courts rule game accounts can be inherited

With all the recent debate about digital ownership, I thought this was worth sharing.

Multiple Chinese courts have ruled that game accounts, virtual items, and other digital assets with real economic value can be inherited by a deceased player's family. In several cases, the courts also ruled that standard Terms of Service claiming accounts are non-transferable cannot override inheritance rights granted by law.

The rulings covered everything from valuable in-game items to game accounts worth hundreds of thousands of RMB, with courts ordering companies to cooperate with lawful heirs.

Given the recent discussion around PlayStation's digital future and game ownership, it's interesting to see courts taking the opposite approach by strengthening players' rights over digital gaming assets.
