Struggling to find a job in marketing after getting laid off
I got laid off in mid june from an insurance company i worked at for 9.5 years (we got bought out, my role was eliminated, there were other lay offs). Before layoffs it was a 35+ person company. I started as a marketing coordinator then got promoted to marketing director but i only managed one other person on the marketing team
I made it to the fourth and final round interview at a big company. Got rejected because the company i worked at was too small and i didnt have big company experience. That was about a month ago. Then yesterday a recruiter tells me a company is passing on me because i’m “overqualified” the recruiter told me the marketing director title probably scared off the client. Is it the right move to change the title from marketing director to marketing manager? My old job always said our titles were flexible, it was a very small informal company
I’m currently doing freelance stuff for a fitness group. Should i mention it’s freelance on the resume or mention it to a recruiter if they ask about it? Or do i just act like i’m currently employed?
It’s just incredibly frustrating. I’m constantly being told i dont have the right experience…yet i check almost every box on the job description. What am i doing wrong? I know the job market sucks but i’m getting desperate. I’m not looking for anything incredible. I’d settle for something between around $60k or less but i was hoping to make something closer to $75k.
What else should i be doing? I think i’m pretty decent at interviewing. I could always be better but i dont think that’s where the weakness is. It feels like it always comes down to not having the ideal experience
