She’s So Pretty
Hoya Linearis ‘Secrets of Success’, not sure why that’s on the label. Couldn’t find anything about it. I’m just hoping to keep her happy. Blew my ”only 4” pots” rule!!! 😳😬

Have any SoCal Hoya collectors ever found any of the following in a 4” pot at a big box store or nursery? I’m a little anxious and want these but I’m seeing the same Hoya plants week after week. If there’s hope that there might be some occasionally at these stores, I can be patient, maybe.
Serpens
Krohniana Black
Lucanosa Bloody Hell
Manipurensis
Linearis
Sunrise
Insularis
Engleriana
Hoya flamingo dreams
Hoya pachyclada marginata
Hoya snow lotus
Got this little guy a couple weeks ago, repotted to a self-watering pot, saw these spots on the older leaves and figured just possible bruising and getting roughed up at the big box store. After taking a closer look this morning, not so sure. Thoughts? Your help is much appreciated!
Btw, no creepy crawlies. I water with a systemic and spray with insecticidal soap. Any raised white and dark specs are from dust and planting medium.
Just found this little guy on a poinsettia in the house that I was taking outside due to white fly infestation. So gross!!
UPDATE: decided to do it! Went back to the nursery early this afternoon. Couldn’t find it and thought, sad but ok, good. And there she was! Now she’s home. See, you never know what tomorrow will bring!
I just came across a really beautiful 6 inch inner variegated Bella. It was so pretty. I put it in the cart and went to the cashier. The cashier rang up $90! I couldn’t believe it. I had a $25 credit but still could not bring myself to pay that kind of money and she was so pretty. Is that a good price for this plant? Picture is for identifying purposes only. Not the actual plant.
Just found this at Lowe’s. Tag says Asst Hoya Prem HB. I’m thinking wayetti due to slender, long, pointed leaves but I’m fairly new to Hoyas. Plus, best way to keep it happy, if you have the time. Your help is much appreciated!
I watered my new Hoya Bella and this got caught in the kitchen sink grate and tore off. Should I see if I can grow a new plant or toss? If I can start another, what works best?
Hello! I have a total of three staghorn ferns. Two are labeled as bifurcatum but this one looks different. Do you think it’s a bifurcatum or something else?
I’ve always loved the unique look of these plants but I’m running out of room in the house. If I’m being honest, they were impulse buys. 😩 What are the lighting requirements for these plants when outside? Can they take any direct sunlight at all? I’m in Ventura County, CA.
I finally got my face-pot display set up, and I have one empty pot that needs the perfect Hoya. Each of the other pots have a Hoya, and I’m trying to choose one that will complement the pot and get along well with my other Hoyas. 🤣
If this were your display, which Hoya would you put in the empty face pot?
Bragging rights awarded for the most creative suggestion! 😄
Well over 50 years ago, my mother was given a cutting of an African rope vine. That’s what she was told it was and that’s how she referred to it. She went into her backyard, shoveled a couple of scoops of regular dirt into a pretty crystal oval pedestal compote serving dish, no drainage, no special growing compound. She stuck her cutting in, put it above her kitchen sink in a southeast facing, single-pane window where it flourished and flowered season after season.
Over the years, she lovingly cut and shared pieces of her plant to many friends and family. She watered when the dirt looked dry. She never fertilized. As my mother aged and eventually passed in 2010, I became its keeper. I had a family, a company, a very busy life. Caring for this plant was not a priority. I did not have a southeast facing window. I didn’t have a large kitchen window sill. The plant went where I could find space. It got watered when I could remember, yet, it continued to stay alive in spite of my lack of care. One thing it no longer did was flower.
Fast forward to 2017. We did a whole house remodel. All inside plants went outside including this one. Living in Ventura County, we have great weather but the summers are hot and my plants had no protection. While I lost most, this compacta struggled greatly, but didn’t die. At some point I must have realized it’s struggle which motivated me to make an effort. If it could continue to live through the hardest of elements, what could it do with some love and care? After all, it was old, it had been neglected for years, how long does it really have left?
I’m not sure when it happened but the crystal bowl had broken. I transplanted what was left of the plant into a 1 gallon plastic nursery pot. It had a small root ball with clay-like dirt stuck all around it. I rinsed it off, got some potting soil, again, nothing fancy, and transplanted it. I moved it to my new south facing kitchen counter.
For a couple years it did nothing. It didn’t grow, it didn’t die. Last year, after reading articles in Reddit’s Hoya group, I decided to transplant her to a smaller pot, in rePotme Hoya soil. I’ve decided to refer to her as female due to her steadfastness and resiliency. This is her today with a new little branch popping out.
What have I learned from her? I’ve learned that plants can thrive with just a modicum of care but if you get too neglectful, you may have to step things up. You don’t have to use the best of everything, but it helps to pay attention.
What have I learned about me? I’ve learned I can easily go down the hoya addiction path but I swear I’m stopping! I just received six new hoyas from Hoya Treasures. I find myself perusing the big box stores, just to see what’s there. And, there’s only one more hoya that I really want, a Hoya manipurensis, because I like its leaves. 😁
I was watering my orchids today and saw this little thing attached to one. I had a paper towel in my hand and tried to wipe it off, then pull it off and it just wasn’t having it. Have you seen something like this before?
