What would you personally consider a big disappointment in metal

It can be anything, a band quitting too soon or a stinker album or unfulfilled promises. I’m not gonna pick anything monumental, but I was really disappointed in opeth’s recent album as a big fan. I heard the paragraph 1 single and was super hyped for their return to metal. I was sorely disappointed when the album dropped. It started out really strong but just became wanky and boring. It’s too “proggy” for my taste, meaning I think it really just loops around in circles and has no clear direction or momentum in songs. I haven’t listened to it since last summer and might revisit it eventually but I really have no desire to.

Slayer proves they are one of the scariest metal bands with songs like Jihad

It’s just absolutely fucking brilliant. I love how Slayer is able to portray atrocities yet take us in the minds of the people who commit them. It makes the reader or listener ask lots of moral questions- and it’s what truly great writing does.

We all know Slayer is a “satanic” band and have lots of lyrics about Hell, death, Satan and hating Jesus Christ and God- but in my opinion- when Slayer puts you in the mind of people who are awful is when they are truly terrifying.

Take Angel of Death, a song about Josef Mengele, the Holocaust, and Nazi experimentation

Take 213, a song that takes us in the mind of Jefferey Dahmer and his thought process about hunting and killing people and the feelings he has while doing it.

And then we have Jihad. It’s the scariest Slayer song in my opinion. And the prayer at the end of the song is just perfect- “when you reach ground zero, you will have killed the enemy. The great Satan…Satan…..Satan.”

I remember hearing it for the first time and feeling genuinely spooked during the Lombardo double bass- marching part with Araya saying the prayer in the background. The atmosphere is perfect- the execution is top notch. The lyrics put us in the mind of the terrorists who committed the atrocities on 9/11.

It’s the perfect Slayer song and I haven’t seen a lot of other bands tackle topics like this. Yeah Cannibal Corpse lyrics are extreme but idk it just doesn’t feel as scary or nearly as spooky as Slayer is.

Who do I need to add to my brutal playlist

I’m aware CC and Deicide aren’t “brutal” but I think they have a few songs/albums that qualify

A very morbid haul with a bonus

Needed to expand my morbid Angel collection as all I had was Altars of Madness

In order,

Morbid Angel - Gateways to Annihilatiom

Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick with the goofy ass gatefold

Bonus: C418 - Minecraft Alpha Vol. 1 not metal but every bit as amazing.

Opeth - Pale Communion: my favorite Opeth rock record, super happy to find this and I’m a sucker for cool gatefolds

Bongzilla - Gateway: classic of the stoner metal genre. Awesome looking record.

Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon: one of the more unique BM albums ever and was super stoked to find this used in good shape. Very rare find according to Discogs.

Deicide - In the Minds of Evil: one of my favorite modern Deicide albums and another rare used find.

Rotting - Crushed: glad to find this in stock on HHR so I don’t have to keep listening to it on YouTube (green disc cover NSFL)

Regurgitation’s album that Reddit keeps taking my post down for - banger and glad I got it on preorder. (Red and green merge cover NSFL)

Dehumanized - Prophecies Foretold; one of my favorite albums of all time. Dope reissue cover.

Vital Remains - into cold darkness: very different from the Suzuki/Benton era of VR but a gem nonetheless. Love the label on the record itself.

Yellow phantom has a raised wire bump above his eye. Maybe I’m paranoid but that definitely does not look normal to me.
