Vitamancy: Magic of Life
Hello! My Science Fantasy world will have multiple magic systems, just like Cosmere (which is heavy inspiration for it BTW). Here is one of them:
***
Vitamancy
In it's most basic form Vitamancy is simply manipulation of Vitae, which is life-force of organic beings. It's usable on every planet with life. Every being can learn it, but it comes easier to people with affinity to life and nature.
This Arcanum gains people ability to use a lot of different techniques, most of them relating to move and vitality. The most common application of Vitamancy is healing, but there are also more advanced abilities. One of them is controlling biological functions of organisms (like speeding up metabolism and aging), empowering other Arcana or changing Vitae into other form of Aether. But the most interesting use of Vitamancy are Animating and Absorbtion of Power. The first one consists of giving unliving things ability to move. The way animated material behaves must be strictly specified, and you can't change your command after using it. For example, if you animate spear to move in front of it, it will keep doing it until it runs out of Vitae and you can't give it other commands. With the second one allows people to copy powers of other people by sucking their Vitae (something like Dark Magic from The Dragon Prince).
One last thing I wanted to write is describing limits of Vitamancy. The most important is resource of Vitae-in order to use this Arcanum, you have to draw it either from your body, or other living things. It can shorten lifespan of organism, weaken them, or even kill them. It can't change general form of things, so you can't shapeshift with it nor change properties of items you animated (it allows them to move freely despite of gravity though). Also, even though in theory everything can be animated, doing it with organic matter (like corpses, or wood) is easier.
What do you think about it?
If your world has supernatural materials, how do they relate to your magic system?
Some Fantasy worlds have more manifestations of magic than spells or powers. There also magical items or topic of this post-materials. There can be magical metals or crystals. They are mostly used for creation of magic items, but can also help with casting spells (especially ritual ones). But how do they basically work? I'll start:
In my Science Fantasy world the source of magic is essence called Aether. Its' basic form has no special traits, but can be used to power most magic systems. It can also change into many different substances with special properties. They are often related to planet. For example, on Tenebria it manifests as Shade, which can cause illusions and form malevolent monsters. There are also substances which are normal materials infused with Aether. For example, Khaisar has plenty of metals with magical properties. One of them is Blue Iron which can make chaotic forms of Aether stable, but also make people calmer.
Of course, there are much more applications of these materials than using their passive abilities. They can become source of power for Arcane Magic for example. Also, some Arcanums are inherently related to some forms of Aether. One of them is Die Gestalung, which needs magical metals from Khaisar in order to build mechanisms. Others can use primal form of Aether, but can be used easier with its' special forms. For example, Mysticism can make use of Shade in order to activate spells related to fear and darkness.
The one last use of magical substances is gaining new powers of Primal Magic. Their interaction with being of simmilar pattern can cause them to gain new Paths of Power. It doesn't mean these powers can't be used without its' source, but having access to it makes it easier. To explain it, I'll come back to Shade. Well, when animals on Tenebria came into contact with it, they gained ability to use Path of Shadows which gives abilities related to darkness, curses and fear.
How does it look like in your world?
Concept of magic system for my Science Fantasy world
Hello! I have recently come up with an idea of magic system for my world. Whithout further ado, let's start!
Mystical Realm
Galaxy where my stories take place is actually composed of two realms, which are different, but also inextricably connected. The first one is Physical Realm, where everything works roughly the same as in our world (excluding supernatural stuff). Second one, which is called Mystical Realm, is much more complex. It's basically realm which souls, minds, energies and concepts of the world belong. It's also source of magic used among inhabitants of galaxy, since it is the place they draw Aether, which is the source of every magic.
Thought, Arcanum and Connection
Mystical Realm is related to a lot of mystical forces and laws, which are very important for both sapient and non-sapient creatures. The most important of these laws are Thought an Arcanum. Let's decribe them:
- Thought-Mystical Realm is a place, where thoughts of creatures move just like sounds move in the air. Most of them are weak, but some can cause important changes. The precise way of working depends of type of thought. For example, wishes themselves don't change anything unless they are found by some Spirit who has ability to grant them, will of gods can fundamentally change nature of Mystical part of their planet and symbolic thoughts, belifs and imagination can modify it in less significant way.
- Arcanum-in the Galaxy, everything has a meaning and hidden nature, which is called Arcanum. It makes magical properties of said thing, phenomenon or organism different, which is especially important for Primal Magic. If you have simmilar Arcanum to your power, you make it more powerful. Arcanum also has a lot of different aspects, like identity, connections or to other things in reality. It can be also slighty modified by Thought.
Categories of Magic
It's finally time to get to the point. Inhabitants know two main types of magic, which are very different (but not opposed) to eachother. They are Primal Magic and Thaumic Magic. They both draw their power from Aether, but do it in completely different ways. Let's scratch it beneath the surface:
- Primal Magic-this magic is based on inherent powers of person or creature. It's mostly related to Arcanum of said being, so proper personality can empower (or weaken) these abilities. They are very instinct based and need no training. However, it's also dangerous form of magic since strong emotions can make you lose control over it. In the Galaxy there are a lot of powers. Each one has different uses and empowering situations, but it's topic for other post.
- Thaumic Magic-in the Mystical Realm there are a lot of patterns that govern reality. One of them are Thaumic Systems, which can be used for different types of magic. It's basically like programming where every system is related to different foci of powers and allow you to cast spells related to its' Arcanum. It is much safer than Primal Magic, but its' practicioners need a lot of work. In the Galaxy there are a lot of different Thaumic Systems, most of which are related to culture of each species.
What is your headcanon about story of SC cartoon?
reddit.comYes, I know they don't have canon ages. But it doesn't mean we aren't allowed to headcanon their ages. Then, how old do you think the critters are?
Hello! Some time ago I have been creating my own magic system for my world. I want to connect it with metaphysics and cosmology of this universe. This is why I am asking you about it. Also, I think it can be interesting to see other people ideas.
Hello! Some time ago I started an High Fantasy worldbuilding project and still stuggle with my magic system.
Basically in this world magic is ability to use different energies found in nature. It is categorised into different categories which differ by source of energy and use. My current ideas are:
- Arcane Magic-magic using power of elemental powers. It's easy to use and spectacular but also limited in power. For example, you can use it to invoke power of elements quickly and heal, but not cast curses or shapeshift.
- Spiritual Magic-magic using power of soul, mind and indistinguishable forces. It's rather subtle because it powers spells like curses, enchantments or illusions. Some spiritualists can even see things normally unseen.
- Primal Magic-this magic is rather unique. Basically it covers natural abilities of different creatures, like draconic breaths, or elven bond with nature. It's not purely spiritual nor arcane and has the broadest potential in use. The limit is that it only allows you to use powers you are born with.
Unfortunalety, I don't have any more ideas. Maybe you can come up with something?
