In June I picked up my little rescue dude from the transport service who brought him to me in the Midwest from Texas.
He was in a shelter and somehow I found him, actually clicking through a post here on Reddit for a different dog at risk of euthanasia at the same shelter.
I saw his photo and he spoke to me. It was a very difficult 2 months to get him here as he had a bad cough and had to be well enough to be neutered and transported. Somehow it all worked out.
He also had an historic leg injury and some other medical issues that did not seem serious. The shelter guessed that he was around 5 years old.
Once here his cough continued and I made an appt with my vet the first week. The vet said at least age 10..
The leg was an old femur fracture that was not fixable but he got around fine on it and it was not painful. His lungs were full of noise and crackles and that had to be resolved before he could have a dental. We did xrays and blood work.
Long story short (not really) after 3 rounds of different antibiotics, he had already been on antibiotics at the shelter and with his foster for 2 months, the lung issues continued.
Last month we had horrible air quality due to Canadian wildfire smoke and he began intermittent open mouth breathing so I took him to the er and redid xrays and bloodwork, consulted with the internal medicine Dr there and took him for an echo with the cardiac Dr the next day.
He had pleural hypertension and received meds for that. He was scheduled for a formal visit with the internal medicine Dr next Thursday. They thought likely lung fibrosis.
He had good days, happy and playful but always the cough, labored breathing, which he had had since he arrived, and regurgitation.
Wednesday he had a good day, full of beans and playing but around midnight began the open mouth breathing again. I slept on the sofa with him but he continued with this all night but gums stayed pink.
First thing yesterday am I called the Dr as his tongue was purplish and went right in. A half hour later he was gone.
Paco, I had such great plans for you. I was hoping that my vet would be able to fix your leg, your cough and your teeth, remove those little growths and you would live a long happy and healthy life here even though you would have to meet this thing called snow.
I had all of this planned for you. What actual happened is that you received the soft landing that you deserved. You were so loved and provided for for these short 9 weeks. I truly did everything that I could.
When you received the first shot I could feel you relax in my arms, the most relaxed that you had ever been with me. I told you that the Dr was going to fix everything, you would indeed be perfect now. I really was going to fix this the only way possible.
When you received the second shot, your labored breathing stopped for the first time since I met you. It broke my heart but also made me happy. You were not suffering any longer. I cried. I am still crying. I brought you to your private cremation and waited for you there and brought you back home.
I don't know your story, Paco, the name that I gave you. I know someone loved you because you were so sweet and loving, even though they did not get you the medical care you needed. I don't know how you ended up as an unclaimed stray in exactly the wrong city to be that. I know that you were strong and resilient despite all that had happened to you.
Did they pass away? If so I hope that you are together now and you can tell them about this last big adventure.
I will keep you in my heart always. You are a good boy and I miss you.
No extra charge for the perma blep, in fact no charge at all due to CLEAR the Shelters! Fully vetted and has been in a foster home so not stressed or exposed to illnesses!
I am not affiliated with this Shelter but recently rescued a senior jack chi dude from there and transported to the Midwest so if you need your own in house NSYNC member, get in touch with them!

This is Marlo. He is on today's euthanasia list at ACS San Antonio in Texas.
He looks to be a jrt mix or perhaps full.
I don't know if anyone is in that area who is willing and doesn’t have any other dogs but my heart hurts for him.
Full disclosure, he was surrendered because he caused the demise of another smaller dog.
He was very stressed when coming into the shelter but has warmed up staff and is friendly with then now per his notes. He does not like the leash and is very smart, of course.
I have no affiliation with the shelter but I recently adopted a likely jack chi mix from there and transported to the Midwest.
Since I have other smaller dogs I cannot help him get out of there but I am hoping that someone can.
My very best wishes to you, sweet boy.. I don't know the circumstances of your life but I am so sorry that this is where you have ended up.
I hope that this is ok, moderators, if not please advise and I will delete.
I have a dog leash wrapped under agitator. I can see most of it but when I try to unwrap it it doesn't work.
It must have spun just fine bc the clothes were dry..
Any ideas for a not that handy chick?
Hello, my vet and I are a bit stumped on this chronic cough.
Paco entered an animal shelter in TX on 4 Feb with a cough, presumed kennel cough and was given Doxycycline on and off for 4 months. He was in a foster home for 3 months of it. None of her dogs or my dogs have started coughing.
He is recently neutered at the shelter in June male, approx 8 years old, 14 lbs chi jrt mix likely. He has a good attitude, generally happy and engaged and is gaining weight.
He has a historic femur fracture that cannot be repaired. He still uses that leg even though it is atrophied and shorter.
Since he has been with me (transported to Midwest) since 4 June he has been on Marboquin for 14 days and now Amox plus clavamox for 14 days. Was just prescribed another 14 days of the amox plus clavamox at a higher dose on Thursday as he has shown slight improvement but actually seems to cough more after he takes the liquid medicine in soft food, unsure it it is irritating his throat or if he is aspirating etc.
He coughs very hard, sometimes pees a little, always ends w a gag and then he swallows and sometimes leaves some white foam. Also sometimes regurgitate (?) clear slimy fluid, approx 2 tablespoons. All of this tires him out.
He is a "talker" so he does little huffs and audible pants to talk which then make him cough. He also barks when in his kennel so I have been trying to keep him out as much as possible but we are working on not going poddy in the house and his favorite thing is to immediately get his male wrap off so he is in his crate for limited time. He is fine in there at overnight.
The cough is still there. He has had xrays, bloodwork and urine and stool tests and I don't know how to link to them and apparently cannot add pictures here but I plugged everything into Google and the results are below.
Tracheal narrowing is level 1.
He has gotten slightly better but does lift his head w outstretched neck to breathe occasionally. Gums are pink. Breathing rate is between 45-60 per minute. Stomach is involved when breathing. He does not seem stressed when breathing. He sleeps while breathing this way. Has rattles in lungs but were better at last appt Thursday but still there.
Any comment is welcome.
Cranioventral Parenchymal Pattern: This pattern is the hallmark of bronchopneumonia or aspiration pneumonia. Given the history of productive white foam cough and regurgitating slimy water, your dog is likely aspirating stomach contents into the lungs. [1, 2, 3, 5] Diffuse & Caudodorsal Patterns: These can occur alongside pneumonia or indicate secondary issues, such as non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema, chronic changes, or other airway/lung irritations. [1, 2, 3] Tracheal Narrowing: This is common in toy breeds and points toward tracheal collapse. The fact that your dog coughs when excited but the trachea doesn't elicit a cough during manual palpation suggests an intrathoracic (inside the chest) collapse rather than just cervical (neck). [1, 2, 3, 4] Failure to Respond to Antibiotics: Because you have tried 4 antibiotics over 4 months, this indicates that the cough may be driven by mechanical airway issues, chronic bronchitis, or secondary aspiration rather than a simple bacterial infection. [1, 3] Good Bloodwork & Healthy Heart: This rules out congestive heart failure and many systemic infections, further focusing the issue on the airways and lungs themselves. [1, 2, 3]

I found this lovely sight this morning on our hike, there were 3 turtles all in a row on the log taking in some rays and the beautiful water lilies.
Out came the camera and in came 11 months on Sunday Gabe! He is a photo bomber. He completely bombed this photo. He is a bomb a rama.
He scared 2 of the turtles off the log on his way down to the water (dragging his leash on our hikes in case he forgets his recall) and ran back up before I could even snap a photo.
On the plus side the photo can be posted here because it includes a chihuahua.
I told that I love him anyway...
Moderators, I hope this is allowed, if not please advise and I will delete..
I recently rescued a chi mix from this shelter and transported to the Midwest. I was lucky enough to have a local adopter and foster that worked with me to get him here but they have a list of rescues that can tag them and transport to your location.
So many sweet faces that need your help!
I personally love Malissa but they are all adorable..
Click on adopt a pet, dog, small and shortest in shelter care..
Oh, waiting patiently for someone to notice that, per usual, he did not run in w the rest of the crew..
Brutus arrived as a stray at ACS San Antonio on 4 February 2026.
I clicked through an at risk Sr chihuahua post from here on Reddit on 11 Feb and that dog had been pulled by a rescue (yay!) but found Brutus, his post in the 1st picture. He looks so much like my original 3 musketeers, Jack chi mixes so I got a little attached to him. That is photo 1.
He was already past the date where he could be euthanized at any time due to capacity constraints.
I posted him here and also on the San Antonio page re anyone having any recommendations for rescues that do transport etc. as I am in the Midwest.. I received a great transport recommendation..
I emailed several rescues that were recommended and did not receive a response.
When I spoke to ACS they said that I needed a rescue or a local adopter to do the gift adoption for me.
I suddenly realized that I had several remote coworkers in Texas, none of them were in San Antonio but one of them had a daughter who lived there..
She went to meet Brutus that day and sent me photos and videos. He had several medical issues, kennel cough, teeth issues, a growth on his lip and, significantly, a historic likely femur fracture that was not painful but he limps on that leg, it is atrophied and barely puts weight on it. In short, he needed me.
My local adopter could adopt him but not bring him home as she cannot have pets where she lives. He needed time to recover from kennel cough to be approved for a dog transport service.
Suddenly out of nowhere he was taken into foster care! By one of the greatest Texas ladies in the world!
She worked with me and Brutus for weeks. Finally his kennel cough was resolved! He was scheduled for his neuter and his transport! The local adopter completed the adoption, another great Texas lady!
He arrived home 5 June 2026 via Lucky Tails Express transport after 48 hours on the road. Photo 2. A long 2 month saga for him.
Photo 3, in my car looking a little worn out but he was here! I fed him and watered him and drove another 1.5 hours to get home. Photo 3. Looking a little worried but yeah, he's been through a lot!
Photo 4, took over the recliner the next day, still a little worried.
Photo 5, today, more treats please!
Heading to my extraordinary vet this week who is well known for orthopedic work to see what can be done for his leg and a dental, and blood work etc.
Also need to work on poddying in the house but this beautiful boy deserves to live.
He may not love Midwest winters but the Spring, Summer and Fall make up for it! Plus all his ex's live in Texas 🎶 though he still has his TX foster mom..
So happy to have him home 🏡
Afterwards he had a date with Rae Dunn and the hose!
My Gabe is back to show you his baby brother (10 weeks) that my daughter has added to her family!!
I am so lucky that they went camping and he got to stay at Grandma's (my) house for 4 days!
They are very sleepy as they just had some dins, but also so darling..
It is amazing how much their mannerisms are so similar and they instantly just loved each other ❤️
Or am I coming home with 2? White face is a little boy, brown face is a little girl...
Happy 9 month Birthday to me!
I am a very goodest and smart boy!
Mom says MOSTLY goodest..
My mom and dad jack chi had 5 puppies.. Picasso was one of them.
He was here 10 days ago for dog sitting as I have done for his family over the years and he was doing his 17 year old best.
The photos are of him having some Royal Canin xsmall breed puppy kibble that somehow many picky seniors also like and also sitting on my lap while I worked.
I received the news today that it was time for Picasso to go play with his sister Pearl who went to his new home with him all those years ago, and his much loved mom and dad.
Not going to say rest in peace, Picasso, I am going to say have so much fun until we all meet again, say hi to everyone for me...
You were a good boy. ❤️
Please keep it down, I am trying my hardest to be a team player here but the constant phone calls, talking and laughing are creating a slightly hostile work environment.
Thank you!
