EU foreign policy

Hi! Has anyone written their bachelor’s thesis on EU foreign policy? I really need some help, as my supervisor is currently dealing with an issue and isn’t able to help me at the moment.

What topics did you work on and what research problem do you think would be interesting to explore? I was thinking about doing something related to EU–Russia relations, but I can’t seem to come up with an interesting research hypothesis. I would like to prove a specific change in Russia determined something about the foreign policy of EU. I was also thinking about somehow connecting it to the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood, Black Sea, energy security and enlargement, but I need some help with the connexion of these variables.

I’m honestly a bit stuck at the moment and I mainly need some ideas for interesting research topics.

Thank you!

IR and the EU eastern neighborhood

Hello! I've just studied linkage and leverage theory and I would like to ask what are some interesting dynamics in the EU eastern neighbourhood that I could study through this lens. I’ve tried to analyse the recent news, but I’ve only found connections to the EU integration process of the Eastern Partnership countries. I was wondering whether it might be a good idea to look at the influence of multiple external actors, such as China, Turkey, and Iran?

If I wanted to apply this theoretical framework to the Eastern Partnership countries, what could I analyse that would also have a connection to the Black Sea region?

I’m sorry for asking so many questions, but I simply need to put some ideas into a structure and it would really help me to have a few research problems or issues that could be analysed from this perspective.

Thank so very much!

AskSociology about protest

Hello! I want to attend a sociology faculty one day because I'm so passionate about the social movements. However, I have a question: what could I study in relation to a protest? Is it methodologically correct to conduct a study using interviews and observation? Thank you so much and I'm looking forward to find new things?

Sociology

What interesting thing could I demonstrate? This is the first time I’m doing a research paper entirely on my own, and I’m quite short on time when it comes to coming up with a suitable research idea.

Our professor has only given us the methodology we are required to use: interviews, non-participant observation, and content analysis.

Advice for a beginner

Hi! I’m facing a bit of a problem and I was hoping you could help me. I recently conducted a research project on the role of schools in reproducing gender norms, using Pierre Bourdieu’s theory as my theoretical framework.

Now, I have another course in sociology and anthropology where I need to conduct a different research project, and I’m looking for some ideas. So far, I’ve considered studying inequalities or prejudices in education, again from a Bourdieusian perspective, but I feel like I would like to explore some new topics and approaches.

I was thinking of using a mixed methodology, combining semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation and content analysis.

I would really appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Thank you!

Sociology

Hello!

I’m writing a paper for a course and I could really use some advice. I’d like to base my paper on Howard Becker’s labeling theory, but apply it to the school system.

I was thinking about somehow connecting it to gender norms, segregation, and the advancement of women in the profession ( especially in the university academic environment). I’ve read several articles that gave me this idea, but I’d also really appreciate hearing other people’s perspectives on what could be interesting to study within this broader topic. Also, if you think there might be another theory that would be more interesting to explore, I’d really appreciate if you could let me know. I’m very interested in sociology, but I’m still at the beginning of my studies and I’m not yet familiar with all the different theories.

For the methodology, I was thinking of using interviews, non-participant observation and content analysis. Any interesting ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

Sociology

Hi! I’m planning to conduct a research project and I have a methodological question. I would like to study the influence of gentrification on social polarization, but I’m not sure whether “social polarization” would be the most appropriate variable, or whether “social cohesion” would be more suitable.

I’m also considering using triangulation, combining semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and content analysis. However, I’m not sure whether I should also conduct interviews with people who have been displaced from the area.

I would really appreciate some advice on how you would approach this research and what methodological choices you would make.

I should mention that this is only for a university presentation and is not intended for publication.

Thank you!

Topic ideas

Hello! Do you have some interesting topic ideas for a paper that must combine the Eastern Partnership, UE security, conflicts in the ex-soviet region? I need an aim for my final paper and would be really good some advice because I'm looking for something interesting! Thank you so much!

I need some ideas, please!

Hi! I really need your help! I’m currently stuck with my research, and I feel like I’m no longer able to move forward. I’ll explain below what I’m trying to do and what the main aim of my paper is, and I would really appreciate it if you could suggest 2-3 secondary research hypotheses.

I already have the main hypothesis, but I need 2-3 additional hypotheses that could strengthen my research. Essentially, I want to demonstrate that EU enlargement towards the countries in its Eastern neighbourhood can be understood as a form of geopolitical balancing against the Russian threat. In order to demonstrate this, I would need 2-3 additional hypotheses with variables that can actually be tested.

I was thinking that one of them could focus on the wars and conflicts in the region - particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine and the frozen conflicts - and somehow connect this to the strategic importance of the Black Sea.

For the second one, I was thinking about formulating a hypothesis that would allow me to analyse the development of the Eastern Partnership countries, including their societies, economies, and political systems, in order to assess the evolution of their European orientation.

Finally, I was considering a hypothesis related to EU conditionality and how it may influence the European perspective of these states.

The main aim of my research is to show that EU enlargement constitutes the EU’s most important security instrument for filling the power vacuum in Eastern Europe that emerged after the collapse of the USSR. A second objective is to demonstrate that delays in using this instrument created strategic vulnerabilities that Russia subsequently exploited.

Another issue that I find particularly interesting, but I’m still not sure how to operationalise and analyse it, is the different trajectories of the countries in the EU’s Eastern neighbourhood in terms of their European orientation.

I’m really sorry to ask for so much help, but I genuinely feel stuck at the moment and could really need some guidance. Thank you so much!

EU dynamics

Why do you think that the wars in the post-Soviet space have not had the same effect on the European perspective of the Eastern Partnership states? For example, Ukraine and Moldova are now candidate countries, while the others are not. In my opinion, this depends to a large extent on both the nature of the conflicts and the heterogeneity of the states themselves. But could it also have something to do with a balance-of-threat logic (balancing and bandwagoning)? I know this concept has been applied more often to the Middle East, but I think it could also be useful for explaining the differentiated integration of the Eastern Partnership countries!

EU differentiated integration

How would you explain the differentiated integration process of Eastern Partnership countries by the Regional Security Complex Theory as conceptualised by Barry Buzan and Ole Wæver? What intrigues me is the fact that Ukraine and Moldova have entered the EU accession process, whereas the other Eastern Partnership states have not. I therefore need an explanation that goes beyond simply arguing that the Eastern Partnership states differ from one another.

EU neighborhood vs enlargement

Hi! I understand that there is a connection between the Eastern European Neighbourhood Policy and the enlargement process. I know that the ENP does not imply a membership perspective, whereas enlargement ultimately aims at membership, but I don’t quite see how the two influence each other.
