Would you miss smoking on the course?

Local courses have been banning smoking over the last few weeks due to fire risk. Totally understandable.

But let's not shy away from the fact - at least where I play - some people feel like it's acceptable to leave fag butts on the floor, especially around tee boxes. Yuk.

Is this a problem just at my local course - a member's club but open to the public - or is this endemic across golfers?

I'd be happy for them to revert to a "vape only" rules if it did away with this litter. (As you might have guessed I don't smoke so only seeing one side of this!)

Who has marshals at your course?

In US golf forums the marshal features a lot (mainly people using them to sort petty squabbles etc from what I can work out). Seems like their main job is driving around telling people to pick up and speed up.

Never come across one in the UK. Are they a thing over here? Or perhaps just at the fancier clubs?

Ski instructor in Tignes 1800?

Hi all. My wife and I are looking for a joint half-day ski lesson in December in Tignes 1800. We'll be there before the Xmas break so hopefully not too busy.

Does anyone have recommendations for a ski instructor? Preferably independent or small company - much prefer this over ESF etc.

Etiquette/rules on bringing a caddy at your club?

I suck at golf and struggle to enjoy it. But I really love watching my wife play so sometimes I'll go round with her just as an informal caddy/golfer/ trolley pusher. We just pay the green fee for her.

At my local club nobody seems to care, although I've never explicitly asked...

Before I give the game away, where do (average) clubs normally stand on this? Would they make a "non playing partner" pay a green fee anyway? Or is it acceptable to bring a caddy along with you, so long as you're clearly not trying to avoid a green fee for someone who will draw out a club on the 2nd tee?

Today's the big day then for MTD

How many clients have been ghosting you and choose today to come out of the woodwork and ask you to 'sort my MTD out for me'

I've deliberately taken the day off work today. If you're leaving it til the 11th hour, I'm not interested.

Rant over.

Do you put in cards when you're playing away?

I'm not a member of a club so I put in handicap cards on myEG wherever I go. But I noticed friends are only putting cards in at their home club.

If I join a club, does this mean I can only put in cards there? Or, do people just like to put cards in at the course they know best, because presumably it'll make their handicap a little lower based on their experience with that course.

Do you put in cards whenever you play a proper game?

Members 'roll-ups' at your club?

How common is this? I've seen it at two clubs this year for the first time, i.e. weekend mornings you can't book a tee time, you just have to turn up and queue.

I think it's the club's answer to being oversubscribed, but I don't like the idea - you've no idea how long you're going to be waiting, and occasionally you don't actually get to play if the queue is too long and is going to butt up against the already-booked agteitee times.

Is this simply when clubs can't admit they are oversubscribed or is it a logical solution to making weekend morning play available to all?

Who's at the women's open this weekend?

New to watching women's golf. Aside from the big names, which presumably will have big crowds, who are the up and coming British women to keep an eye on and try and watch?

Ball style for bunkers?

+++ EDIT: thanks for some excellent suggestions peeps.. as ever, I am looking at changing things at the wrong end of the club!! gonna get myself some bunker lessons once this heatwave is over!

Maybe an odd question but the worst part of my game is bunkers... Usually it's 2 shots, sometimes three, to get out.

Are there certain types of balls which are easier/garden to get the spin on to get up and out of the bunker? I'm thinking of switching balls, if it'll make a difference

(I appreciate this might then be a trade off Vs distance or roll or whatever)

Women's golf shopping at women's open?

Newbie question but my wife and I are going to Lytham st Anne's this weekend. What's the shopping like for women?

I.e. most golf shops stock men's stuff with, at best, a token ladies section in the corner.

At women's competitions, can we expect them to have a proper range of women's golf stuff?

Hard ground = more yardage but same scores??

Only been playing 2 years now. I've noticed over the last month or so, the hard ground and hot weather mean my drives and approach shots are going significantly further than before. That's to be expected.

But, I've found my scores aren't going down because at the same time, chipping and wedge shots are getting much harder. Getting balls to stop on the green is also hard. I've pretty much banned my sand wedge for anything other than, well, sand.

Is this a standard "thing" in golf - the trade off between distance and control? Or should I expect to always see better scores in hotter weather?

'Dogs at the turn

Yes, I know, terribly American. At our club there's a vending machine and a loo at the turn. That's it.

Wondering if other UK courses have something more than that? Or is full-on catering purely a US thing?

Not a single BOO-YAH or Get In The Hole! at the Scottish Open.

Turns out, you can enjoy great golf with just a polite applause when they smash it off the tee.

Makes you proud to be British.

Does anyone else NOT like silence on the tee?

Basically, when I'm about to take my shot and everyone respectfully stops talking etc, I actually feel so much more pressure on me, like three sets of eyes drilling into the back of my head.

I'd much prefer if everyone else just carried on chatting and ignored me shot.

Am I alone in this? Do I have a problem which goes beyond golf...?

Golf courses along the M6?

My wife and I are going to watch the Women's Open at Lytham St Anne's. We'll be coming from the south, and looking to play some golf somewhere not far from an M6 junction.

Nowhere fancy or tough - we're very high handicappers, just looking to break the journey from down south with a casual round of golf.

Any suggestions?

Shot scope Vs Arccos?

Looking at getting something to passively track my on-course yardage (currently using basic GPS watch and a pencil and paper!). I am a high handicapper so this is really just to track data for fun - not trying to be a pro or break 80 (or, Frankly, 100)

Arccos seems like the gold standard but not cheap... On paper, shot scope seems to do pretty much the same but without the recurring subscription fees.

Is there a bit more to it than that? Or are they pretty much the same product and would I be a mug to pay out for arccos?

Most rookie etiquette errors?

In my first ever round of golf, my playing partner gave me several 'gimmes'. Young naïve me thought it meant that you treat the ball as holed at that point.

It took about 4 more games for me to realise that you still have to add an extra shot(!). No wonder I was basking in the false glow of some low scores - I just put it down to beginners luck.

Ladies and gentlemen of Britgolf... Please tell me I am not alone in thinking this when I first started?? What other clangers did you drop when you first got into golf?
